D-Link’s 3G Pocketable Router Connects 6 Devices Over Wi-Fi
I haven’t used a MiFi yet, but I will soon. I temporarily traded Dave Zatz my Palm Pre for his Sprint MiFi. The MiFi creates a wireless hotspot for up to five devices to share the mobile broadband connection. What if five wasn’t enough and you wanted to connect six devices at one time? I’d be wary of spreading the pipe too thin, but you could throw caution to the wind with the D-Link myPocket router, aka the DIR-457.The myPocket got the OK from our friendly neighborhood FCC today and is expected to launch in the second quarter. Pricing is anticipated around $250, but I suspect that price will go down with a data plan and carrier subsidy. As far as carriers, it’s a safe bet that AT&T will see the 7.2 Mbps DIR-457 based on support for the HSPA bands in the 850, 1900, and 2100 MHz bands, although only the first two are needed here. The upper band means the same pocketable router could work overseas as well, but the FCC isn’t likely to confirm or deny that. It’s out of their jurisdiction.

Sensor Network Could Sniff Out Terrorists, Literally [Security]
OK, so you might feel weird about those naked-o-vision scanners they’re installing at the airport. Here’s a nice alternative: chemical noses that can sniff out explosives and precisely track them through crowded areas.Researchers from Germany’s Fraunhofer Gesellschaft have created a network of these chemical noses that can do just that. First, the sensors pick up the explosives as the person carrying them move through an area.
This is where the Hazardous Material Localization and Person Tracking (HAMLeT for short) system gets smarter than your average sensor network. HAMLeT’s data fusion process puts complex algorithms to work meshing security camera and chemical sensor data to ferret out the offending individuals. The more sensors an offender triggers, the more data the system crunches and the closer it gets to picking out the particular individual traveling along that path. In a trial with the German Armed Forces, the system accurately zeroed in on five “terrorists” carrying hidden explosives, no civilian heroics or emergency landings necessary.
It’s not a perfect system yet, but they hope to iron out the kinks and have this deployed in places like airports and stadiums in the near future. [PopSci]

Jay-Z speaks on Illuminati
This is a Jay-Z quote but I’m posting it because it applies to Bey as well. The “Beyoncé and Jay-Z are devil worshippers and part of the Illimunati” stuff is getting real old and tired. CLEARLY it’s not true, so I just wish people would stop trying to make something of what isn’t there. Beyoncé has credited God her whole life for her success and still does. Thanks to our friends at Necole Bitchie.
Earlier today, Jay-z spoke with Angie Martinez of Hot 97 about claims that he is a “devil worshipper” and part of a secret society:
I don’t know where it started. I don’t know where it came from. I really think it’s really silly. For the record, I of course believe in God, but I believe in one God. If people must know my religious beliefs, I believe in one God. I don’t believe in religion. I don’t believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I think it’s one God. I think it’s all the same God, and I don’t believe in Hell. But as far as God, of course I believe in God. Am I a part of some sect or cult? That sounds stupid to me. It’s like ignorant to even say, and umm… I guess that’ll be the last time I address that. It’s ignorant to me
I can’t even get in a golf club in Palm Springs. I’m from Marcy Projects. Just think about that? People that control the world?
Do you believe that those sort of organizations exist?
I think there are cliques of friends that control things. I don’t if there is a devil worshipping sect. That’s a little Tom hanks. I believe there are cliques of people that control the world…but that’s just natural process. I’m sure Obama has his people and everything is good but as far as how far people are taking it…
So you don’t intentionally do this to put people in a frenzy?
I’m an entertainer at the end of the day. Maybe I’ll push your buttons but you know…

The Cost of Strict Control
Diabetologists and endocrinologists always used to insist that patients achieve excellent glucose control while avoiding hypoglycemic episodes, but research has now established that those two goals are incompatible for most patients, since intensive glucose control triples the number of instances of severe hypoglycemia, with ‘severe hypoglycemia’ being defined as hypoglycemia so incapacitating that it requires help from by-standers — if there happen to be any. Good blood sugar control sets up a vicious cycle, since intensively controlled patients become less able to detect hypoglycemia and can fall much deeper into hypoglycemia before recognizing its symptoms. (V. Briscoe and S. Davis, "Hypoglycemia in type 1 and type 2 diabetes," Clinical Diabetes, vol. 24, no. 3, p. 115 (2006)) For young children, there is a 60% increase in the risk of hypoglycemia per 10% decrease in the HbA1c value. (H. Chase, "Glycemic control in the prepubertal years," Diabetes Care, vol. 26, p. 1304 (2003))Hypoglycemia is often difficult to detect and to correct, since 55% of all hypoglycemic episodes in intensively controlled diabetics were found to occur during sleep, while 21% of hypoglycemic events could not be explained. ("Epidemiology of severe hypoglycemia in the DCCT," American Journal of Medicine, vol. 92, no. 3, p. 339 (1992); S. Turpik, et al, "Severe hypoglycemia in children and adolescents during multiple dose therapy," Diabetes Medicine, vol. 15, no. 8, p. 695 (1998))
With the increased emphasis on intensive control of blood sugar levels, there has been a correspondingly increased number of admissions to hospital to treat severe hypoglycemia. From the period 1990-1993, before strict control was very widely practised, to the period 1997-2000, when it was standard practice, the number of diabetics hospitalized for hypoglycemia increased by 50%. (M. Asuncion, et al, "Increase in hypoglycemia admissions," Ethnicity and Diabetes, vol. 17, no. 3, p. 536 (2007) From 1989 to 1991, there were an average of 48,500 hospitalizations per year for diabetic hypoglycemia in the U.S., or about one hospitalization per 30 type 1 diabetics. (H. Fischbein and P. Palumbo, ‘Acute Metabolic Complications in Diabetes, ch. 13 (Bethesda: National Diabetes Data Group, 2nd edition, 1995))
Hypoglycemia has several serious effects on the diabetic, the most obvious being its cost in terms of social disruption and the fear and uncertainty of future episodes. (S. Nordfeldt and J. Ludvigsson, "Fear and other disturbances of severe hypoglycemia," Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, vol. 18, no. 1, p. 83 (2003)) Hypoglycemia can precipitate as well as worsen neuropathy in diabetics, and if excessive amounts of insulin are taken to achieve good glucose control, this can itself lead to microangiopathy. (K. Sugimoto, et al, "Peripheral neuropathy and microangiopathy," Diabetes and Metabolism Research Review, vol. 19, no. 5, p. 392 (2003)) Even frequent but moderate hypoglycemia can damage the peripheral as well as the central nervous system. (M. Wysocka-Micewicz, et al, "Impact of hypoglycemic episodes on nerve conduction," Endokrynolgia Diabetologia Choroby Prezemiany, vol. 13, no. 1, p. 17 (2007) [summary in English] Brain damage can also result from diabetic hypoglycemia, and even a single episode of severe hypoglycemia in an old type 2 diabetic can increase the risk of dementia by 26%. (M. Figola, et al, "Specific changes in human brain after hypoglycemic injury," Stroke, vol. 28, p. 584 (1997); R. Whitmer, et al, "Hypoglycemic episodes and risk of dementia," Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 301, no. 15, p. 1565 (2009))
The worst risk of diabetic hypoglycemia is death, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ("Hypoglycemia in Patients with Tpe 1 Diabetes," August 14, 2003, RFA-DK-03-017) has determined that 2% to 4% of all diabetic deaths are caused by hypoglycemia.

Rising Unemployment And Obama’s Hard Turn To The Left Should Freak Out Owners Of Bank Stocks
Here’s another reason not to own financials: if Obama responds to the collapse of his poll numbers by taking a left turn towards radical populism, the proposed $120 billion “fee” on the banks may be the thin end of the wedge. By now the White House must have figured out that it’s stuck with 20%+ permanent unemployment, in which case the Democrats are toast in 2010 and Obama is out on his ear in 2012.
The left (including such luminaries as Paul Krugman at the New York Times) demanded the nationalization of the banks earlier this year. That was a non-starter in March, largely because the credit of the U.S. sovereign would have been impacted. But it can’t be ruled out. The banks, as I’ve noted earlier, are effectively captive subsidiaries of the Treasury in any case, vacuuming up fed funds at 0.25% and lending it back to the government.

Tunebug Shake turns your helmet into a speaker

If you haven’t previously heard of TuneBug, that’s because it is a new company and although its portable speaker solutions were shown at CES 2009, they are only just now making their way to market. The products are all based on patented NXT speaker technology which generate sound waves that pass through the surfaces the speakers (aka “sound generators”) rest on, effectively turning those surfaces into speakers. Predictably, there’s a desktop solution which sits on your desk. Now there’s also a helmet-top solution which sits on your helmet, giving you a kind of ambient bone dome surround sound like you’ve never had before – ideal for skateboarding, bicycling, skiing and motorcycling.

From Co-Working to Cubicles: Where Are You Working?
One of the fantastic things about being an entrepreneur is that you can define your own working conditions. From Craigslist’s modest Sunset District apartment headquarters to Twitter’s stylish new digs, startups are getting creative with their work spaces. Below are a few options to consider in choosing your space. Virtual: As covered in an earlier post, ReadWriteWeb runs a totally virtual office. Using a combination of Basecamp, Google Docs and Skype, the team manages to coordinate articles and interviews from more than five locations across the globe.
Traveling Space: We recently came across iStopOver – a service that allows you to rent space for your team while on the go. If you’re together at a conference, or you’d just like a change of pace, this service allows you to rent furnished office space on a daily basis.
Co-working: Rather than having your staff work in isolation, you can rent them desk space at one or a number of distributed co-working facilities. Sites like San Francisco’s Citizen Space and The Hat Factory allow nomadic tech workers to share ideas and solutions in a friendly environment. Many co-working spaces offer a daily drop in rate as well as the option for monthly membership. To find a space in your community, check out the co-working map on the Co-working community blog.
Lease and Rent: Sites like LoopNet and Rofo specialize in finding commercial space. A number of sites will allow you to take on space for a short-term lease with the idea that you may need to scale up your team in a short period of time.
If you’ve got a unique work environment, let us know in the comments below.

Emmy Rossum Slams Heidi Montag’s Plastic Surgery Praise
The Hills’ Heidi Montag-Pratt spent most of Wednesday singing the praises of cosmetic surgery is a cover story with the new issue of PEOPLE, but at least one Hollywood actress wishes Montag would take her inflated bosom and hit the bricks.
Emmy Rossum, 23, is not impressed with Montag and took to her Twitter page this afternoon to blast the reality starlet for flaunting her new “exotic-Asian” look.
“It upsets me to see young women in the spotlight advocating plastic surgery,” Emmy wrote, later Tweeting: “ANY surgery is extremely dangerous & should not be taken lightly — much less, used as a tool to increase notoriety or popularity.”Heidi said she has become “beyond obsessed” with altering her look with the help of surgery and underwent 10 surgeries in one day in a session two months ago.
“By putting this on magazine covers, we are somehow legitimizing the dangerous lengths to which some will go for fame and beauty…..There are so many REAL ISSUES in this world that NEED attention. Let’s try to take a moment to be grateful we are ALIVE,” Emmy added before Tweeting information on how fans can donate to the Haiti Earthquake relief efforts in the Caribbean.
