  • Please Enjoy Live Streaming Coverage of Our Imminent Doom | Discoblog

doomsdaySet your watches, apocalypse watchers: On Thursday, the Doomsday Clock—that harbinger of untimely death run by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists—will change again.

When the organization debuted its clock in 1947 in the wake of the new dangers of the nuclear age, they set it at “7 minutes to midnight.” From there, the scientists have adjusted the metaphorical apocalypse countdown either up or down in response to geopolitics. The furthest we’ve ever been from our collective end is 12 minutes, after the signings of SALT and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 1979 17 minutes, after the end of the Cold War. The closest we’ve gotten is 2 minutes (the namesake of the Iron Maiden song), in response to hydrogen bomb tests.

    What now? From Politico:

“The last time the doomsday clock was reset was in 2007, from 7 minutes to five minutes to midnight.

(Director Kennette) Benedict said she would offer no hints about whether the clock would be reset closer or further away from “doomsday” on Thursday. One suspects the group of scientists would be likely to show some appreciation for Barack Obama’s efforts on nonproliferation, climate change, etc. compared to his predecessor.”

This will be the first time you can watch live streaming of the Doomsday clock change, which happens at 10 a.m. EST on Thursday here in New York. I, for one, will not be watching, since we all know the world’s actually going to end in 2012 because of some Central American prophecy.

  • Why Your Nexus One Won’t Work on AT&T 3G

Google’s Nexus One phone is a heap of fun to play with, but so far in the U.S. the only 3G network you can access it on is that of T-Mobile. There are two issues at play here: the underlying technology a cell-phone network runs on, such as HSPA for 3G or EDGE for 2G, and the frequency the radios in the device use to communicate. In the case of the Nexus One, it uses the 900MHz, 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands for 3G data and the GSM 850MHz, 900Mhz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz bands for 2G. Because the T-Mobile 3G network in the U.S. is listening for 3G data in the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands, it’s the only U.S. network with which the Nexus One phone can communicate.

AT&T’s 3G network listens for phones transmitting 3G traffic in the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, which the Nexus One cannot do. All it can do is send 2G traffic in those bands, so it does, making a slower data experience for those using the Nexus One in Ma Bell’s mobile network. As the world moves to services like Long Term Evolution, which carriers will roll out this year and will be widespread in 2012, it will be easier to share devices across networks, but frequency bands will still be an issue.

  • Glenn Beck Shows His Audience The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever

Fox News host Glenn Beck used the chart we’re calling “The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever.”

The chart, which was put together by Calculated Risk, demonstrates that the jobs decline as a percentage of the workforce is the worst since the Great Depression, matching the sharp but short drop in 1948, as the war machine wound down.

Equally important, the duration of these job losses, as well as the lack of a sharp recovery (at least so far), suggests that the problem will be with us for a long while.  We’re now 24 months into this decline, and we’re still at the bottom.  By this point in most previous recessions, we had already recovered all of the lost jobs.

We’re glad this is getting the attention it deserves. (And thanks to our friends at Mediaite for grabbing the video!)

  • Green Chile Braised Pork

There is a town called Pueblo located in southeast Colorado and it is known for its locally grown green chilies. There they grow them in many varieties; hot, medium and mild and add them in almost everything. This recipe has been recreated based on an old Pueblo green chile recipe from long ago. If you don’t live in that neck of the woods and cannot find the distinctive Pueblo green chile then you can certainly substitute any number of other green chilies for this recipe. This recipe is very simple with few ingredients and limited prep work. It takes cubes of inexpensive pork butt or shoulder and braises it in a spicy sauce filled with green chilies, tomatoes, onions and garlic. It has an amazing flavor for so few ingredients. This recipe has been prepared to serve eight because you may want to have leftovers for another night or your family might just be asking for seconds. And with so few carbs in each serving you might just want to indulge yourself. I hope you enjoy.

    Green Chile Braised Pork

    Ingredients:

2 lbs. pork cubes, butt or shoulder, trimmed of all visible fat
    1 cup onions, diced
    2 cloves garlic, minced
3 cups whole peeled or diced tomatoes
6 to 8 Pueblo green chilies (substitute Anaheim, Cubanelle, Pablano or Banana peppers)
    2 cups + 1/3 cup water
1 1/2 Tbsp. all purpose flour
    salt and pepper
    vegetable spray

    Preheat broiler.

Begin by roasting the green chilies. Place them on the broiler tray a few inches from the heat and blacken them on each side. Remove, place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Set aside for about 10 minutes. When peppers are cool enough to handle peel off the skin and scrape out the seeds, ribs and stem. If you prefer more heat you can leave in the seeds and ribs. Chop and set aside.

Lightly coat the bottom of a large pot with vegetable spray and heat on medium high. Add the onions and garlic. Season with salt and pepper if desired and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the pork cubes and brown. If using whole tomatoes pour off the liquid into the pot and chop up the tomatoes. Add the tomatoes, green chilies and 2 cups of water and stir. Bring to a simmer, cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Whisk the remaining water and flour together until smooth and add to the green chile sauce, while constantly stirring. The sauce will thicken slightly. Cover and continue simmering for about 15 minutes longer. The sauce will thicken more while cooking.

  • Nanotechnology Could Vastly Improve The Color Of LED Lighting [Led]

I switched to LED lights on my Christmas tree this year and, while generally pleased, there is no doubt that the colors are a bit “off.” A simple nanotech coating could change that by making colors brighter and warmer.

Nanosys is the company behind this new approach, and the process is fairly simple: a phospor material developed from nanomaterials is layered over standard blue LEDs (the most energy-efficient color) to create a spectrum of colors that are warmer and more vivid. So, unlike other methods (quantum dots for example), Nanosys hasn’t tried to reinvent the wheel. Manufacturers could simply apply the coating without having to start over with a completely new product.

Furthermore, Nanosys’ material could be utilized in a lot more than just light fixtures. Think about laptop and HDTV displays with better, brighter screens—all without increasing energy consumption. [Treehugger via DVICE]

  • Media Room 2.0 and Windows Mobile

mediaroomhtchd2 Here is a snippet of Steve Ballmer’s CES keynote which does not seem to have picked up much steam in the media, but is still pretty interesting for Windows Mobile users.

Currently Microsoft is trying to push their Video On Demand system to networks, and with some success. The system called Media Room has 4 million users around the world, on AT&T with U-verse, BT with its Home Vision, On Deutsche Telecom and a few other places around the world.

Microsoft announced with Media Room 2.0 that any Xbox 360 will be a able to work as well as a set top box to access the service.  For around 40 million Xbox 360 owners this is obviously great news, and may influence their choice of cable provider.

Of interest to Windows Mobile owners however is that the Media Room client will come to Windows Mobile handsets also, allowing subscribers to watch VOD and also their recorded media from anywhere in the world.

Now I don’t know about Xbox 360 owners, but as a Windows Mobile user having this feature would certainly influence which TV service I sign up with.

Are you more likely to get U-verse or similar because of this?  Let us know below.

    Plastico:

A localizaçao etc….

    🙂
