  • Orange Executive Reveals Tablet Details

The web has been rife today with news that Stéphane Richard, an executive from France Télécom, the French communications company, had let slip could-be details about Apple’s supposedly upcoming tablet in a recent radio interview.

During the Europe 1 interview, which aired Monday morning, Richard revealed to radio host Jean Pierre Elkabbach that the highly debated tablet could feature a built-in webcam, possibly similar to that found in Apple’s current computer lineup, and disclosed that the device will have integrated 3G capabilities. According to Richard, cell phone carrier Orange will be providing the 3G network infrastructure for the tablet in France. However, he failed to specify any price points or possible contact plans.

Apple is expected to unveil its long-rumored tablet at a San Francisco press event toward the end of this month, where hopefully all will finally be made known, putting an end to more than a year’s worth of often deliberate speculation.

The translated interview between Richard and Elkabbach follows:

Elkabbach: According to the weekly magazine Le Point, in a few days your partner Apple will launch a tablet?
    Richard: Yes.
    Elkabbach: Equipped with a webcam?
    Richard: Yes.
Elkabbach: Will Orange customers be able to enjoy it?
    Richard: Of course!

The entire recorded interview can be seen (in French) over on NowhereElse.fr, with the pertinent details discussed around six minutes in.

Following the interview, to little surprise, no official comment has been made from Apple, however Orange has since attempted to clarify on the “leak,” releasing the following statement a few hours after the interview aired:

“These responses in no way reflect Orange’s confirmation of the existence of the rumored device. The spokesperson was merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available.”

France Télécom currently enjoys a healthy relationship with Apple, with the telecom company selling the iPhone in over 28 countries through its global mobile brand, Orange. So, I’d like to think that this slip-of-the-tongue from Richard could be deemed as credible, despite Orange’s somewhat fluffy statement.

  • Performed By A Cosmetic Surgeon, A Facelift Procedure Turns Back the Hands of Time

A rhytidectomy is able to improve the most visible signs of aging by tightening and sculpting the deeper foundation and structures of the neck and face. As a person ages, the effects of sun exposure, gravity, smoking, heredity, weight fluctuations, and the stresses of daily life begin to show themselves in their face. A rhytidectomy procedure can bring back youth to a person’s face. In youth, a face is smooth and firm due to proper positioning of normal facial fat and good skin elasticity. As a person ages, muscle tone and skin elasticity weaken and facial fat descends which causes prominent skin folds and deep creases between the corner of the mouth and nose. The jowls of a person become more prominent along with fat deposits and loose skin forming in the neck.

I’ve moved to Chicago about 3 months ago to start college and I love looking at the skyline. I live in Lincoln Park and I usually go to the top of the Children’s Memorial Hospital Parking lot to get the best open air view of the city and that is roughly nine stories up. I’ve taken quite a few really good pictures from there and it’s a cool little spot.

Bt I’m wondering if any chicago photographers and other skyscraper and urban-loving chicagoans know of any other great free high up places with really good views of the city or lake or both? I’m up for a little exploring even in this weather…

  • Projeto muda o fuso horário no Acre e em parte do Amazonas.

    Quote:

  • Recycling bin solution

This is Glyn’s second, which I think is just brilliant. Compared to his, my Effektiv cabinet with custom drawers recycling corner looks ghastly. Glyn’s does take a lot of space but oh-what-joy to sort and hide the recyclables beautifully.

He says, “In Germany it is required to recycle. You basically need a bin for everything: glass, paper, batteries, plastic and metal packaging, organic waste and the rest of household waste. As you can imagine, for all those bins alone you need to come up with an idea if you don’t want them to dominate your kitchen. Since we only rent an apartment we don’t have much choice of where to put all that stuff. So we’ve come up with the idea of having a recycling cupboard dedicated to the biggest bins.

We took a Akurum cupboard with Applad doors and handles to match our Ikea kitchen. Put the worktop on which is also used in the kitchen and cut two round holes in it. We sealed and glued the inside cut with edging strip which came with the work top. As lids we used some wooden food plates which Ikea sold in the summer and added Ikea door knobs. In order for the lids not to fall through we cut the holes in the Akurum top about 2 cm smaller than the one in the worktop.

And voila! Our recycling cupboard was done.”

  • Hair Loss Treatment for Man: Enumerating the Different Options

Many people suffer from hereditary loss of hair. For men, the abnormality is called Androgenetic Alopecia or “male pattern baldness,” which is implicated in 95% of hair loss cases. This type of hair loss is caused by an increase in dihydrotestostrone (DHT), a direct component of testosterone. While this type of hair loss is inevitable, it can be slowed using hair loss treatment for man and other various treatments.

Since the cause of male pattern baldness is caused by a rise in DHT, the most effective hair loss treatment for man is the one with that focuses on blocking the build up of DHT in the body. One such medication for male hair loss is finasteride. Finasteride is a hair loss treatment for man that works by preventing certain enzymes from converting testosterone into DHT.

Minoxidil is one of the most popular hair loss treatment for man. It is widely regarded as effective in about 25% of men suffering from baldness on the crown. It is applied twice a day in cream form. However, it is effective only when it is continuously used.

Surgery is one other hair loss treatment for man. Although the surgical procedures have undergone significant improvements, the effects are not evident until after several months have passed since surgery. In hair transplants, very tiny plugs of hair are taken from the side or back of the scalp, which are then transplanted onto bald spots.

Scalp massage is a traditional hair loss treatment for man. Massaging the scalp stimulates hair follicles and unclogs blocked oil glands in the scalp. It also encourages growth of healthier hair and scalp.

Tissue expansion is another type of hair loss treatment for man. In this procedure, tiny balloons are placed under the scalp between those areas with thick hair. Over a number of months, these balloons are gradually inflated.

Another hair loss treatment for man is to have proper diet as this is extremely important in hair loss prevention. What you are feeding your body will influence the different areas of system function. If you have an unhealthy diet, you have higher chances of developing hair loss. To prevent such thing from happening, be sure that you eat whole, natural foods as these will guarantee permanent good health. Make sure that your diet consists of whole grains, fresh fruits and lean meats. Protect your system by avoiding or cutting down on excessive caffeine, alcohol, tobacco products and highly processed foods.

Vitamins are another option for hair loss treatment for man. Taking vitamins that help prevent hair from thinning is another option for men who are suffering from baldness. These types of vitamins are valuable in aiding thinning hair and in the promotion of quick growth of healthy hair. These vitamins are typically a combination of amino acids, biotin, zinc, magnesium and vitamins B6.

Many who resort to this type of hair loss treatment for man report that these specific vitamins have produced positive results and that they already have thicker, shiny and healthier hair. If you want, you can take vitamins that are solely for balding and hair loss.

  • Better Business Journalism

In the latest installment of the Big Think’s “What Went Wrong” series, Chrystia Freeland, the Financial Times’ U.S. Managing Editor addresses whether better business journalism could have prevented the crisis. She doesn’t think so. She says nothing could have prevented the crisis. That may be true, but I believe it could definitely have helped matters. And she appears to agree that business journalists could have been better by being more eager to tackle complex problems, questioning the consensus point of view, and not getting as caught up in market optimism. I agree and think it’s worth expanding on these points.

    Business Knowledge And Understanding

Part of the reason I got into business journalism is because I was tired of reading so much terrible, uninformed reporting on finance and economics. So I completely agree that no business reporter can succeed if he or she lacks an ability or willingness to tackle complex problems. Business news, more like any other kind of news, requires a solid understanding of what you’re reporting on. You also have to be able to perform analysis, because lots of numbers are involved. If you can’t navigate your way through a spreadsheet, then you’re going to have trouble effectively covering business and finance.

That doesn’t mean you need to have worked in the market before becoming a business journalist, though it might help. It is possible to develop the knowledge as you go. A perfect example would be the New York Times’ Andrew Ross Sorkin, who I consider to be a top-notch finance reporter. In another interview posted this week as part of the Big Think Project, he notes separately one of the reasons why he has had so much success covering Wall Street:

I’ve tried to study the industry. I’ve spent enormous amounts of time. I can, unfortunately, do a model, a DCF model, with the best of them. I wouldn’t say I enjoy it, but — and I also think that when you’ve studied it up, when you’ve come to the table with the right questions, when it’s clear to the other side, the interviewee, that you know what you’re talking about, you can get a lot more.

    Consensus, Optimism and Wackos

Then, there’s consensus and optimism. I think these points really mesh together, and I’ll explain why in what follows.

I’ve noticed the vast, vast majority of business news coverage can be grouped neatly into two categories: arguments for the consensus and arguments by wackos. There’s very, very little voice given to those who wish to thoughtfully challenge the prevailing views in the market. Why is this?

First, I have noticed a sort of strange difference between business news and other news. When it comes to general news, lots of people complain that journalists only focus on the bad news, while rarely doing stories on good news. That’s because good news doesn’t get eyeballs. Which headline’s story do you think more people will read: “Local Man Named Teacher Of The Year” or “Local Man Murders Entire Family”?

But with business news, it’s sort of the opposite. The business community likes reporting that accentuates the positive. It’s almost as though many of those in business like their news to make them feel better. Maybe they want their egos stroked to believe their stock portfolios are safe. Most of this community wants the news they consume to reflect market optimism.

And that makes sense, because business news can affect the market. In the rare event that legitimate business news hits with a negative view of a company, then people can lose money. Since far more market participants are long stocks, instead of short, pessimism can actually cause tangible harm. That’s why the consensus — which tends to be optimistic — is a touchy thing to buck for some news outlets.

Of course, there are news reports that do disregard the consensus views. But they’re most often the wackos. These are the nut jobs calling for Zimbabwean inflation in 2010. They’re the crazies worrying about the U.S. defaulting in the next two years. Business viewers don’t find these guys harmful, however, because few take them seriously. Sure, there’s a handful of people who might heed these wacky warnings, but most of the business community finds them an amusing diversion and feels they pose little risk to the general consensus. News outlets love them too, because they’re generally amusing guests to watch or hear from. As reality TV’s success has proven: people love watching crazy.

Does that mean that business journalists can’t question the consensus views in a thoughtful manner? Not exactly, but it does mean that there’s a risk in doing so. Some media outlets would be okay with that; others might not. While investigative reporting that reveals the facts, whether positive or negative, is desirable from a journalistic perspective, the reality is that media needs readers to pay the bills. Those goals don’t always coincide.

But I have always lived by some advice given by Mark Twain in one of my favorite quotes of his, and think business journalists should too:

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

I believe one of the most important things that a business journalist can do is look at the prevailing views in an economy and question them. Anyone who wants to learn something from reading what you write doesn’t need to hear what they already know and believe — they need to learn something new. If you turn up some data or logic that goes against a commonly held market view, then that could be incredibly useful. If business reporters really embraced this philosophy, then perhaps business readers would realize the value that could be derived by good journalism.

  • Can Free AppaDay Help Generate Sales For Indie Developers By Giving Apps Away?

    FreeAppaDay.com

With big game publishers dominating the ranks of the App Store’s best-seller lists, what’s an indie game developer to do to get his or her app noticed? Give it away for free as part of the soon-to-launch FreeAppaDay community.

FreeAppaDay is run by a coalition of mobile game developers and tech providers: Joe Bayen, CEO of ICS Mobile, Blacksmith Games, mobile ad tech platform TapJoy, and iPhone game platform OpenFeint. The service officially goes live Jan 18; each day a single paid app will be available for free for 24 hours. Users will be able to sign up for email alerts for specific genres of games, and the site will keep track of highlighted games as part of an “app of fame” section.

FreeAppaDay’s founders were inspired by the success of the Appvent Calendar, a promo that gave a free game away each day leading up until Christmas (via pocketgamer.biz). Blacksmith Games started the calendar; ICS Mobile said one of its games garnered over 100,000 downloads after being featured as part of the list, hence its push to launch a more comprehensive platform.

And comprehensive it will be. With participation from DeNA-backed OpenFeint, one of the more popular open-source social and mobile game development platforms, the FreeAppaDay site will likely attract a variety of game developers wanting to promote their apps. The group says the selection criteria for apps that get featured will be “solely based on quality.”

Of course, the biggest question will be whether the free downloads actually drive subsequent sales of the paid app—since promotion is only good if it helps to drive revenue. It is not clear whether developers can just make a freemium version of their games available on FreeAppaDay, and then require players to buy an upgrade to get more functionality or reach higher levels. Still, with no sign of a decrease in the number of new games coming to the iPhone, the time is ripe for third-party services like FreeAppaDay and Playhaven to help the indie developers stand out. Release.

Designed by Sagan Piechota Architecture, the 10,000 square foot home employs a winding, s-shaped plan to take advantage of the stunning ocean views from all rooms, while creating exterior courtyards. Curved glass walls and thin structural pillars offer maximum exposure, and ensure that the home enjoys plenty of natural light, while creating a sense of transparency between living spaces.

To counter the extensive use of glass, the home is anchored with heavy, textural stone walls that recall the nearby cliffs. Wooden slats also adorn select interior walls, adding warmth to the space.

For those like me who thought the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 would live and die by the UK market, where Vodafone recently dropped it, an interesting surprise is the handset showing up in Sony’s American Style store with the Xperia 2a moniker.

The handset appears identical to the version being shown elsewhere, but likely sports North American frequencies and an exorbitant price tag.

Despite the device showing up, there is still no indication when the handset will actually  drop, with rumours of a summer showing circulating at present.

  • Drug News: Impotence, Arthritis and Schizophrenia

    Pill BottleHere’s a quick drug-news roundup:

More than two-thirds of patients who took an experimental impotence drug were able to have sex within 15 minutes, according to Vivus, the company that’s developing the drug. (Among patients who took a placebo, the success rate within 15 minutes was less than one third, by the way.) Impotence drugs such as Pfizer’s Viagra and Eli Lilly’s Cialis can take hours to work, so faster onset could be a selling point, Dow Jones Newswires notes. Still, the company has yet to file for FDA approval of the drug, avanafil, and a decision from the FDA isn’t likely until next year. And Viagra will lose patent protection in 2012, which will bring generic competition to the field.

The FDA approved Actemra for rheumatoid arthritis patients who need more treatment after trying a drug like J&J’s Remicade or Abbott’s Humira. Those drugs block something called tumor necrosis factor; Actemra, sold by Roche, blocks another substance, interleukin-6.

Novartis started selling a new antipsychotic drug called Fanapt in the U.S. While this isn’t particularly surprising — the FDA approved the drug last year to treat schizophrenia — the backstory is interesting. According to the Washington Post, Novartis actually sold the rights to the drug a while back, to a company called Vanda that was founded by an MD — who used to work for Novartis. Last year, Novartis acquired the rights to sell Fanapt in the U.S. and Canada.

  • Stay Warm with West Indian Potato Curry

Curry, especially when it’s spicy, is ideal for the winter months. It’s also pretty easy to make at home. Indian Potato Curry is a hearty dish that can either be paired with rice, chicken, beef, and even seafood. Unless you are of course a vegetarian, then it’s perfect by itself.

The prep time for this recipe is about 35-40 minutes, which is perfect if you are strapped for time. I suggest making large portions of this recipe and freezing it.

    Indian Curry Meal

    Ingredients:

2 tbsp (25 mL) vegetable oil
    2 Ontario Onions, sliced
    2 cloves Ontario Garlic, minced
2 tsp (10 mL) minced fresh gingerroot
1 tbsp (15 mL) curry powder (or to taste)
2 large Ontario Potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 Ontario Sweet Potatoes, peeled and cubed
    4 canned tomatoes, coarsley chopped
1-1/2 cups (375 mL) chicken stock or water
    1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt

    Directions:

In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; cook onions, garlic and ginger until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add curry powder; cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add regular and sweet potatoes, tomatoes, stock and salt; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender.

    ***

The best part about this dish is that it’s only 168 calories per serving and is only 4 grams of fat. Now that’s something to check off of your New Year’s Resolutions.
