  • Pure Oasis, Sensia and Sirocco 550 internet radios hands-on

Pure’s WiFi-enabled radios are making their US debut here at CES, and we’ve gotten to grips with the top trio on offer. The Oasis (pictured above) is a weatherproofed, rubber-rich unit, which can resist splashes of water and go on for between 10 and 15 hours on a single charge. We agree it looks like a durable machine, but — while it can reach some pretty high volumes — the sound itself was predictably lacking at the furthest ends of bass and treble. Moving up in the world to the Sensia delivers a snazzier touchscreen interface with built-in Facebook and Twitter integration, but we clashed with some deal-breaking lag while using it. Finally, the top tier Sirocco 550 offers a more conventional styling to go along with a CD player (those still exist?) and an iPod / iPhone dock. Priced at $249, $349 and $449, respectively, these should all find American shelves to sing from by the middle of this year.

  • TrendNet’s latest Wireless N router intertwines 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands

We’ve told you before how awesome setting up a dual-band network is — and in case you’re wondering, it still is — but if you don’t want to set it up yourself, TrendNet’s got you covered. Wrapping up 2.4GHz and 5GHz in a spectrum snuggie is the 300Mbps TEW-673GRU Wireless N router. Not much in the bells and whistles department, but sometimes working well is really all you need — besides, how many more ways can the company claim the “world’s smallest” market? The price and release date, in no particular order, are February and $149.99.

  • Ford to Launch Nine New Engines in 2010

American car manufacturer Ford Motor Co. announced it will launch in 2010 a fleet-wide new engine and transmissions range in North America. In its plan to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, Ford prepared an impressive range of nine new or upgraded engines and six new transmissions.

This represents an important step in the company’s five-year effort to modernize its entire global portfolio. The 2012 model year Ford Focus will receive an all-new normally aspirated 2.0-liter … (read more)

  • Best and Worst things about your countrie’s airlines

Seen this in another forum so this could be interesting.

    In New Zealand

GOOD: Great services in the domestic routes with relatively new Bombardier Q300 50 seat airliners. Very reliable with lot’s of tech in terminals nuch as slef check ins even on domestic routes. Air New Zealand is very safe with very few crashes. Quite cheap and is much more convenient than driving or using the almost non existent rail network.

BAD: FOG. Can disrupt a lot of flights in almost any part of the country. Government and ANZ giving international airports to wrong cities (in my opinion though). Hardly any good competitors on the market with JetStar and Virgin Blue saying that they would go into domestic routes but so far that hasn’t happened. So, ANZ has a complete monopoly of domestic flight markets. Self check in has crashed a couple of times.

  • Peugeot SR1 Hybrid Roadster Concept

    peugeot-sr1-concept1.jpg

  • TV Ears TV ears-on: it could save your marriage

You know how much we love gadgets, right? With gadgets like the TV Ears TV, our love is easily recognizable. We had a chance to go ears and eyes on with the rig at CES. Wearing the dangling headset wasn’t like walking on a cloud, but the volume was easily adjustable using the chin strap. We didn’t get a chance to try out the Jitter-Bug-esque remote, but we’re guessing that using the dongle is a walk in the park. Although it might not be your cup of tea, if you get a senior discount at the movies this might just be for you.

  • Intel shows off glasses-free 3D demo — now this is more like it

If you’ve kept even a loose eye on our CES coverage this year, you’d know that 3D is firmly “in.” But our main gripe is that the glasses requirement makes it largely impractical for in-home use. Intel had a comparison demo setup in its massive booth, and it had a top display arranged to showcase glasses-free 3D and the bottom to demonstrate the more traditional glasses-required 3D. A technician at the booth explained that the footage was all specifically shot to fit the format, and a special overlay was applied to the 3D HDTV in order to complete the magic. He confessed that the resolution was “sub-720p,” and there were only eight specific places that you could stand at in order to actually get the full experience. We stood around 10 feet back, dead center, and were downright wowed by the results. You could honestly see loads of depth, and everything appeared buttery smooth. Stepping closer resulted in less-than-awesome visuals, but we’re definitely stoked by the possibilities here. Take note, TV / content makers — glasses free > glasses-required.

  • EUGENE – Matthew Knight Arena (12,541)

McArthur Court has served as the home for the University of Oregon’s basketball programs since 1926. It will be sad for all Duck fans to see this be the final full season there. The venue has more character than many people I know. It will soon fit in a bit more with the old cemetery it sits next to. The rest of the Pac10 conference will surely be happy to see the Ducks move since the noisy old wood and steel venue was known as one of the toughest for visiting opponents.

The new arena is targeting opening for the start of the 2011 Pacific 10 basketball season, which begins at the end of December of this year. The arena will be named after the son of the project’s largest donor Phil Knight who died in a scuba diving accident.

This transition reminds me a bit of the Boston Celtics move in the 1990’s. Mac Court has a lot in common with the Boston Garden, except is much smaller and has never hosted a hockey game. The new arena will be quite over the top with all the technological offerings and conveniences of an arena built in 2010. And it better, with a price tag of $200,000. I read it is the costliest on campus basketball arena ever built.

Check out http://mactomatt.net/ for more info.

Here are some images from the seat viewer.

The arena lies on the east side of the university. The arena is being built between dormitories and a busy road that runs along the north side of campus. This road (Franklin Blvd) used to be known as highway 99. It was the method of travel between San Francisco and Portland before interstate 5 was built. The area north and east of campus reflects a typical pre-interstate stretch of old motels and diners. In my opinion the new arena will be a nice addition to a very tired area of town that could use some redevelopment. Many have called the new arena a gateway to the university from the east. The university really has no clear entrance on the east side so it should look nice.

  • Satellite Photo of An Entire Country Frozen [Image Cache]

Here’s a satellite picture showing why I spent 48 hours stranded in London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 last Thursday. I witnessed about 3000 passengers fighting for luggage, another 3000 waiting for hotel coupons. I left before the food riots.

This is Britain covered under the snow, from top to bottom.

I was lucky. I got the last seat on flight BA177 on Thursday. It was the last flight that left to New York that day, after an extra six hour delay (apparently, there’s only one defrosting machine in Heathrow) on top of the two days. The previous day, they canceled two of my flights. The next day, they cancelled all flights again.

While the weather was bad, there was no excuse to what happened at Terminal 5 those days. British Airways and the people at the airport were nowhere to be found after 6pm. Before that, there weren’t helpful, offering no directions except “we don’t know” and “they haven’t told us anything.” They were the most incompetent, most idiotic people I’ve ever found anywhere in the planet, leaving all their customers unattended on the evening, and treating everyone like cattle the rest of the time. There was a point in which passengers had to step in and organize the baggage belts, because the machines were overflowing and jamming. At another point, there were passengers fighting for food in the departures area. Sad.

When the guy at JFK’s customs asked me if I had anything to declare, I quoted Dennis Farina in Snatch, from the very deep bottom of my heart and soul: “Don’t go to England.” And don’t ever fly British Airways. [NASA]

[A lot of you have written to me in protest of Jesús’s post, claiming prejudice towards the British. I think the spirit of the post is Jesús expressing his frustration at BA, and his quote at the end of the post is from a movie, and a joke. Don’t take it too seriously. Have a good weekend. —Blam]

  • Pictorial: Scenes From Sony’s CES 2010 Press Conference

CES 2010 is nearly over but lucky for you I’m just starting to post some of the amazing content captured during our time at the show. CES was far different this year for Sony Insider than last year, as the site has matured dramatically since then and the level of respect and treatment we receive from Sony reflects that. We were allowed to use a 24.6 megapixel Alpha A900 DSLR and other tools to ensure that Sony Insider’s content stays at the high level in which you’ve become accustomed to. Sony’s CES 2010 press conference was quite impressive this year, and here are some pictures I took that I think you’ll enjoy. I wanted to make sure that you, the fan, could feel like they were right there with me.

Before you get to sit down at the press conference though, you usually check in with the Press Relations desk first. As we can see, Sony’s Social Media Evangelist Sukhjit Ghag and crew were busy making sure that the press were taken care of and that there was substantial updates on the various Sony social media pages for the online fans. The anticipation was building amongst the crowd.

Things were similar to the setup they have had in years past, and basically they slide the door open right before things start and you try to take any open seats within. Somehow, fortunately, there was one special seat wide open just for me right in front of the main stage. I looked over to my left and saw most of the Sony Corporation Executives (not USA, the overall Sony), and Chairman/CEO of Sony Pictures Michael Lynton. It was pretty amazing to be sitting amongst these people who run various aspects of Sony.

Sir Howard Stringer came out to kick things off..

..and it wasn’t long until Taylor Swift came out and played to the press and to the fans watching online.

After Taylor’s performance, COO/President of Sony Electronics USA Stan Glasgow came out and whisked everyone through the various products that Sony was debuting at CES. Stan is an excellent public speaker.

I remember that when the Dash was revealed that many people seemed surprised. Sony really hasn’t done anything like this before, but my appetite rests on a VAIO tablet.

Sir Howard Stringer would come back into the presentation at various points, and somehow I captured this unique angle of him while he was speaking. I promise you it was not a prolonged pose on his part by any means.

Professional Photographer Nigel Barker also came out on stage to demonstrate Transfer Jet with COO/President Stan Glasgow.

I liked Sony’s VAIO line-up announced at CES for the most part. The W Series Eco is a truly revolutionary “green” offering, hopefully it will start a trend amongst other manufacturers. I also am so thankful Sony put a Core i7 processor in one of their PC’s, as they did with the F Series.

To the right of the stage there was also a nice 2010 Sony BRAVIA setup.

Glitter was strewn about all over the floor from Taylor Swift’s performance. Unfortunately, the glitter reflected heavily on the mainand also made lighting rather odd on the speaker’s faces at times.

I really enjoyed COO/President Stan Glasgow’s face on this picture when he announced Sony’s most advanced TV’s to date.

Sir Howard Stringer always has such a warm, friendly demeanor that really invites you to listen, plus he simply knows how to have fun – he reminds me of Akio Morita at times.

It was interesting to observe the photographers on the floor –

Here is the moment right after the press conference, one of my favorite things in the world for some reason.
