  • Google Explains Why Ad Blockers Aren’t A Problem

Reader jorshw was the first of a few who sent in this recent NY Times article questioning how Google would deal with the fact that people are now creating ad blocking extensions for Google’s Chrome browser. What’s really telling is the comment from a Google engineering director, Linus Upson, about why this is no big deal:

“It’s unlikely ad blockers are going to get to the level where they imperil the advertising market, because if advertising is so annoying that a large segment of the population wants to block it, then advertising should get less annoying. So I think the market will sort this out.”

This is the exact right response to this kind of question. It’s a user-centric response that doesn’t immediately rush to the “simple” answer that ad blocking somehow “takes money” away, but realizes that if people are so intent on blocking ads — then the problem isn’t with the people blocking the ads, but with the advertising itself.

  • BUSINESS & MEDIA INSTITUTE: Rolling Stone Attacks ‘Climate Killers’ ‘Derailing Efforts to Curb Global Warming’

Magazine attacks Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch and 15 other ‘polluters and deniers.’

    By Julia A. Seymour
    Business & Media Institute
    1/7/2010 1:36:45 PM

Even popular liberals can come under fire from the media if they offer heretical views on global warming, which many in the media promote with near-religious fervor.

.” Topping the list was Berkshire Hathaway CEO, Obama supporter and media darling Warren BuffettThe magazine criticized Buffett for “doing far more than bad-mouthing climate legislation – he’s literally banking on its failure” by adding 1.28 million shares of ExxonMobil to his books and acquiring a railroad that hauls coal.

Rolling Stone editor Eric Bates also told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Buffett “trashed climate change legislation calling it a huge tax saying it will cost jobs.”

That’s not even news, CBSNews.com reported in September that the Obama administration said cap and trade “would cost American taxpayers up to $200 billion a year.” But Obama dudn’t make the list of Climate Killers.

The Heritage Foundation estimated that capping carbon would act as an energy tax of nearly $2,000 on every American household. Myron Ebell of the Competitive Enterprise Institute has said “it would destroy tens of millions of good-paying jobs.”

Also on the Rolling Stone list were a number of predictable targets for left-wing vitriol, from News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch and ExxonMobil’s Rex Tillerson to Sen. James Inhofe and retired physicist Fred Singer. Each was given a nasty moniker like “the Fake Protestor” or “The Know Nothing.”

With this sidebar to its “As the World Burns” cover story, Rolling Stone continued its one-sided crusade to stop global warming. On Nov. 11, 2009 writer Naomi Klein made the case for climate reparations in the magazine. Back in 2007, Rolling Stone was entertaining predictions from climate extremist James Lovelock (founder of the Gaia theory) who said that by 2100 global warming will kill 6 billion.

The Business & Media Institute has documented how a number of media outlets favor global warming alarmism rather than including other viewpoints in new reports. For every dissenter appearing on the networks, there were 13 alarmists airing their views. By censoring the global warming debate, the news media often leave viewers with the impression that the “science is settled.”

Those same networks ignored the November 2009 climate e-mail scandal “ClimateGate” for two weeks despite the looming climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

  • Ysr Ambani Death Mystery

The TV Channel slowly revealed a few write ups from an American website stating that Ambanis hand is allegedly involved in this assassination rising to Godavari Gas Basin issue. It also revealed that thousands of crores have changed hands to suppress the news of YSR’s assassination.

TV5 stated that a magazine by name ‘Exile’ has come up with detailed story on YSR’s assassination and alleged hand of Ambanis in it. And within a few minutes after showing this news in channel, the American website has downed the link, as stated by TV5
A school teacher said, “It’s pity but sounding like detective novel. Had the involvement of Ambanis is proven, Reliance hardly sees its place in Andhra Pradesh”.

“It’s a master plan of ‘big hand’ to divert people’s attention with Telangana issue. I feel that. Praful Patel said that he will bring out report on YSR’s death in the last week of November. The culprits must have got alerted and diverted the issue encouraging Telangana turmoil in Nov-Dec 2009 by manipulating CBI. They thought public memory is short. But media is there to awaken every minute”, says Ranganath, a cab driver.

The state is now burning hot with these new found suspicions and Reliance offices are getting closed down much before stipulated time from Thursday. We have to see if they will be opened tomorrow.

  • Unfashionable Nonsense: The Much Awaited Jersey Shore Column

Ovid’s number one rule of poetry is that the material must fit the meter.  Since this is a college paper in the Land of the Free, I took a little poll and direct democracy has prevailed in providing me a fitting topic, just in time for the forthcoming episode tonight: Jersey Shore.

For those living in a dungeon, Jersey Shore putatively follows the lives, loves, hot tub sessions (no bathing suit needed!) and alcohol-fueled rages of token natives of the Italian-American seaboard. The cast of characters is a motley crew. JWOWW, an orange-toned beauty, exclusively wears those shirts with the claw marks in the back. Snooki, orange-toned and shorter, I find the most fascinating, as the most self-aware: she declared on one episode: she is not “mature” enough for the program. Also, she was punched in the face by some dude, leading to an impromptu heart to heart with the entire cast. Angelina, an orange-toned girl of average height, was kicked off after she fell into a painful depression related to her boyfriend getting a divorce from his wife that was not her. Sammi “Sweetheart,” also an orange-toned girl of average height, is mainly notable for not getting punched in the face or having a married boyfriend. Also, her poofs (or is it pooves?) are not nearly as intimidating as Snooki’s; since the NY Times recently ran an article asserting that Stanford students use bikes as machines to assert our distinct identities, I feel reasonably confident about the validity of asserting that truly, the poof is what determines the character of the Jersey Girl. On the Shore, pooves and relationships are complicated, but skin tone is not.

I should also mention that there are boys, or “guidos,” on the program. Ronnie seems nice. One male cast member, according to my Wikipedia research, was once a male exotic dancer. That probably summarizes the matters of interest, since, should you ever meet a cast member, I am unconvinced that they would be particularly interesting. I have encountered washing machines that seem deeper. Indeed, the situations defying custom or common sense are the real meat of the show and the relationships that evolve during the most emotionally thrilling summer since Laguna Beach. In some sense, Jonah Goldberg says this better, though, than I. In his critique/diatribe about the show, he admits, “don’t get me wrong; it’s great television. But gladiatorial games would be great TV, too.” Of course, it’s neither here nor there that any particular gladiator be in the arena. It’s the fight that matters; and so it goes on the Shore. Ultimately, it’s absurd to ask where Snooki came from or is going; the narrative is all about the here and now. None are particularly colorful characters, but none need be.

Perhaps this is why Jersey Shore does best with people who, frankly, we perceive to have little direction in life. Anyone want to take a guess on where Snooki will be in five years? Working at a tanning salon? Picking up phones? Hosting her own reality spin-off? And, probably more fantastically for me and anyone I’ve ever watched it with, they don’t seem to feel obligated to think about their own lives this way. It’s an exotic land in which the word “career” would sound as foreign as “IHUM.” There is a delightful logical consistency to their concerns, insofar as they are principally short-sighted. Neither the characters nor MTV feel obliged to keep the word “planned” in their vocabulary. Planning, very well, could spell the end of the uncontrolled energy propelling the whole carnival of vices. Untouched by rational thought, this wild man isn’t found in the forest, but on the boardwalk. National Geographic, take note: developing a program featuring this foreign culture could prove quite lucrative.

Until then, we’ll have to rely on MTV to shock with their latest. The bizarre will always entertain and for the network that produces such masterpieces as “16 and Pregnant,” this is just another chapter in their Bible of popular diversions. Sarah Palin, take note.

  • Reports of climate bill death are greatly exaggerated

    by Daniel J. Weiss

    Despite speculation from a
    few Beltway pundits
, recent events suggest that there is momentum for the
passage of a comprehensive clean energy and global warming legislation in 2010.
Sen. Lindsay Graham’s (R-S.C.) commitment to work with Sens. John Kerry
(D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) to craft legislation is a significant political
    breakthrough.

    Sen. Graham voted
against earlier global warming bills, including those authored by his friend
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Recently, Sen.
    Graham recognized
that reducing carbon pollution by putting a price on it
    would “allow alternative energy sources
to become more economically viable resulting in a cleaner environment. It is in
our own national security interests to achieve energy independence and curb our
    pollution problem.”

    The Copenhagen
    Accord
, while far from perfect, also sets the stage for Senate action in
    2010. President Obama’s leadership led
    to China and India’s first
ever agreements to reduce their pollution rates. The accord also includes a
    compromise between the United States
    and China
to verify pollution reductions according to rigorous and transparent guidelines
depending on the source of financing for the reductions. All reductions are
subject to “international consultation and analysis.” These agreements should address the concern
that the United States will reduce its pollution while
these and other developing countries do little to reduce their emissions.

The public continues to support action to reduce global
warming pollution despite the worst economy in 70 years, the brouhaha over
emails stolen from climate scientists, and $100 million in scare mongering ads
by big oil and other special interests. The Washington
    Post-ABC News poll
released the week of Dec. 14 showed
that by more than 2-1 Americans want to “regulate the release of greenhouse
gases from sources like power plants, cars, and factories in an effort to reduce
global warming.” The Post poll found that three of five voters would support reductions
in greenhouse gas pollution even if it “raised your monthly expenses by 10 dollars
a month.” And 55 percent would still
support reductions if it “raised your monthly energy expenses by 25 dollars a
    month.” The Associated Press-Stanford
    University poll found
    similar results.

    The mainstream
    media
    has written the obituary for
comprehensive clean energy legislation at every step of the process. Such nay saying occurred after House Energy and
Commerce Committee Chair Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and House Select Committee on
Energy Independence and Global Warming introduced the American Clean Energy and
Security Act, before the House Energy Committee passed the bill, and before the
full House of Representatives passed it in June. Chair Waxman noted (subs. req.) that “On every issue that I’ve worked on this year, people have said it
can’t happen and it’s dead for the year.” Claims
about the death of the Senate global warming bill are also greatly exaggerated.  The Senate is on track for a spring debate
and passage of legislation to create jobs, increase American energy
    independence, and cut pollution.

  • The Single Entity Theory of Sports Leagues

    From the NY Times:

Is the National Football League a single entity, or a collection of 32 teams that compete against one another every week?

The question forms the core of an antitrust case that will be heard by the United States Supreme Court next week. How the court rules could shake some pillars of sports law by reshaping the definition of a sports league, which would in turn affect professional leagues, teams and players, as well as the constellations of companies that do business with them.

I'm curious if any of our readers know how the EU (or other jurisdictions) have dealt with this issue.  Any thoughts?

  • Transportation bill could produce environmental and job benefits in 2010

    by Andrea Buffa

As advocates for clean energy and good jobs evaluate opportunities to advance their issues in 2010—from a jobs bill that could include energy efficiency measures to a federal clean energy and climate bill—there is another oft-overlooked vehicle that advocates would be wise to consider.

This year, Congress will likely pass a national transportation bill—legislation that comes up only about once every six years—through which the nation could reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector and significantly curtail petroleum use, thereby reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The transportation bill also could deliver major economic benefits, including millions of new construction, operations and manufacturing jobs—just what the doctor ordered to fix what’s ailing the U.S. economy.

“Transportation is the fastest growing sector in terms of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Jill Kubit, assistant director of the Cornell Global Labor Institute, which encourages labor unions to become actively engaged in climate policy. “But it’s often neglected in terms of the solutions side, so we feel a real need to engage unions and workers around this issue.”

The Global Labor Institute isn’t the only organization that is planning to engage groups in the upcoming transportation debate. The coalition Transportation for America was created in 2008 by Smart Growth America, Reconnecting America, and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership. T4America, as the coalition is called, now counts some 400 organizations that support its agenda to create “a new national transportation program that will take America into the 21st century by building a modernized infrastructure and healthy communities where people can live, work and play.”

“It’s astonished and gratified us the range of organizations that have realized a connection to transportation,” said David Goldberg, communications director at T4America. He listed AARP as being a T4America member that is concerned that the U.S. transportation landscape is unfriendly to aging Americans; the American Public Health Association as a member that is troubled by the health impacts of pollution from the transportation sector and the lack of physical activity that has resulted from our transportation infrastructure; and PolicyLink as a member that wants to provide poor communities with access to high quality and affordable transportation options.

Groups like Environmental Defense Fund and Natural Resources Defense Council are also part of the T4America coalition because of their focus on climate change. “If you’re talking about climate change, transportation is about a third of the emissions, and you’re not going to be able to put all new vehicles that run on cleaner fuels out there in time to deal with the problem. Liquid fuel is going to be the fuel source for a lot longer, but part of what we need to do is not drive so much,” Goldberg said.

The transportation bill is so far-ranging that it touches many aspects of our lives. It addresses highways, bridges, highway safety, public transportation, railroads and high-speed rail, among other transportation issues. It includes the repair of existing transportation infrastructure as well as the financing of new highway and transit capacity. It targets metropolitan areas as well as rural areas. It regulates not only the movement of people, but also the movement of goods.

Groups that seek reform of the transportation system also hope to address a wide diversity of issues through the transportation bill-climate change, health and safety, equity, smart growth and economic opportunity, among others.
There is also a significant amount of money at stake, as well as the potential to create a large number of jobs. The last transportation bill was funded to the tune of $286 billion over six years; the current proposal by Minnesota Democrat James Oberstar, the chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, would increase that amount to $500 billion over six years, including $50 billion for high-speed rail. Rep. Oberstar testified in July that the bill will “create or sustain approximately six million family-wage jobs.”

Many economists consider the transportation sector to be rife with job creation potential. A recent study by the Economic Policy Institute (Transportation Investments and the Labor Market) found that a $250 billion investment in the U.S. transportation system would create more than 2.8 million direct and indirect jobs. The study also looked at the quality of the jobs that would be created by transportation investments and found that they were more likely to be unionized and less likely to require a college degree.

“Across the board, it’s a pretty dense industry when it comes to unionization,” said Ed Wytkind, president of the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. “This means you have higher wages, better benefits and better training. You probably have good quality health care, and you’re more likely to have a pension.”

Although Wytkind’s organization does not represent workers in transportation manufacturing, he is very interested in the potential for increased transportation investment to create not only construction and operations jobs, but also domestic manufacturing jobs. “Most of our manufacturers are buying components and intellectual property from overseas. This [transportation bill] is a great opportunity to look at the next generation of locomotives and passenger rail cars and buses and make sure they’re not only more energy efficient, but that they also support American jobs,” Wytkind said.

Currently, most U.S. transportation funding comes from the gasoline tax, which has not increased since 1993 and is not indexed to inflation. At 18.3 cents per gallon, the federal tax has lost 33 percent of its purchasing power over the last 15 years, according to Oberstar. If more funds are to be invested in transportation to create the jobs and other benefits for which many groups are advocating, the gasoline tax will need to be increased or a new and sustainable source of funding will need to be identified. However, with the economy still in a state of recession, most politicians are loath to support any tax increases. This is a key reason why the transportation bill, which expired in September 2009, has yet to be taken up by Congress and may not be seriously considered until fall 2010.

Funding is not the only challenge for those who seek changes in the U.S. transportation system to address environmental, public health, equity and other critical issues. Many groups still differ on their priorities. For example, while most groups support increased transportation investment, there are divisions as to whether public transportation should be on a more equal footing with highways. There are also divisions between organizations that support fix-it-first policies that prioritize repair and maintenance work on roads over new road and bridge construction, and those which argue that new road construction is needed to address traffic congestion and other problems.

These issues will be discussed and debated throughout 2010 as Congress deliberates the transportation and jobs bills. In December, the Obama administration proposed that the jobs bill include a $50 billion infrastructure investment to go mainly toward highways, transit, rail and aviation. The House jobs bill, which was passed on December 16, included approximately $37 billion in transportation investments.

To the extent that these investments create well-paying jobs and move the country toward a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system, they represent progress. But the transportation bill is still the 800 pound gorilla. As T4America’s Goldberg put it, “By all rights, this [transportation bill] ought to be the best opportunity in a generation to create a bold new vision for our national transportation policy.”

time in its nearly 85-year history that the 175-nation OIE is to carry out an environmental
    investigation.

    The agency swaps
information about diseases in farm animals and issues recommendations in veterinary scares such as H5N1 avian
    flu.

    The probe
coincides with mounting interest in the role of meat-eating in stoking climate change.

    Farm animals are
significant sources of greenhouse gases, either directly through methane emissions from digestion or indirectly, such
as clearing forests for pasture and inputs used in raising
    cattle.

    Vallat, who is
the OIE’s director general, said there had been a “very strong request” from member-states for the
    report.

    The
investigation’s scope will be limited, and it will not seek
to rival or replicate the work of the U.N.‘s global-warming scientists,
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he
    said.

    By some
estimates, there will be a 50 percent surge in demand for animal protein by 2020 in order to feed the world’s burgeoning
population and demands from emerging economies, he said.

    “Whatever
happens, we are going to have to produce more animals to feed the planet,” he told a press conference.

    Celebrity vegans
such as Paul McCartney are urging consumers to boycott meat as a personal contribution to fighting climate
    change.

A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of beef causes more greenhouse-gas and other pollution than driving for three hours while leaving all the lights on back home, according to a 2007 study led by Akifumi Ogino of the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Tsukuba,
    Japan.
