  • Ballmer keynote round-up for Windows Mobile

    ces2010

Almost as if standard, there was not much in this keynote speech for Windows Mobile fans, but the titbits which did drop were tasty enough.

The biggest is likely the confirmation the HTC HD2 is coming to T-Mobile USA in Spring this year.

The next is that some kind of Video of Demand service is coming to Windows Mobile (seemingly part of a general VOD service for PC and X-Box).

Lastly, that we will be hearing more about Windows Phones at Mobile World Congress next month, which is where hopefully we will finally hear more about Windows Mobile 7.

Did anyone note anything else of interest, and did anyone expect more? Let us know your impressions of the speech below.

  • Motorola ces 2010

Due to the back-folding keyboard, the 5-megapixel camera with flash on the Backflip is situated in an unusual position as well, to the bottom left corner of the keyboard. That allows you to take pictures when the keyboard is in the closed position. The back of the keyboard features a large touchpad to assist with scrolling through content on the screen.

Other than its unusual design, the Motorola Backflip’s specs include a 3.1-inch display with a 320X480 resolution, 512MB ROM, and 256MB of RAM. The Backflip is reported to run on a 528MHz processor and will offer support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
The touchpad on the back of the screen is… well, interesting, but that’s about all we can really say about it at this point — as Sanjay said during the keynote, it’ll be up to devs utilizing Moto’s API to do the really awesome stuff with it. In the meantime, it acts exactly as you’d expect a trackball or optical pad to work on Android — just upside down.

In terms of the screen and the Blur experience, it’s a dead ringer for the CLIQ, for better or worse — the big difference, of course, is the fact that the screen can be tilted. The phone’s got a sensor so it can detect when the screen’s at a 45-degree angle, putting it in a media mode and making it particularly useful as an alarm clock. Would we buy one? We’re not sure — it’s no Droid, certainly — but maybe it doesn’t have to be.
MOTOBLUR is Motorola’s Android-powered content delivery service created to make phones more personal and socially smart. It is the first and only solution to sync contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more—from sources such as Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail™, work and personal e-mail, and LastFM—and automatically deliver them to the home screen. Content is fed into easy-to-manage streams allowing you to spend less time managing your life and more time living it.

BACKFLIP is designed around the MOTOBLUR experience and provides multiple features to keep phone conversations moving. Multi-tasking has never been easier with BACKFLIP’s reverse-flip QWERTY keyboard and high-res 3.1” HVGA screen—letting you see more and respond faster. Navigate quickly and easily through menus and features with the new and unique BACKTRACK™ feature. BACKTRACK is a touch panel located on the other side of the device, offering you a new way to scroll through—the Web, texts, e-mails and news feeds without obscuring the home screen.

The Backflip also boasts a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash, video capture, 32 GB of expandable memory, the full Android HTML browser and a 3.5-mm headphone jack. The phone runs on Android 1.5 with Motorola’s cloud-based Motoblur user interface.

Motorola said they will not be announcing a carrier at this time, but we can make a pretty safe guess where this GSM phone will be landing. Stay tuned for a more in-depth hands-on analysis as well as a video showing off the Backflip’s one-of-a-kind design.

With two down, that means we can expect three Android-powered smartphones from HTC to come to “the nation’s fastest 3G network.” Again, no concrete information is known, but it’s not hard to guess that at least one of those devices could be the lust-worthy Nexus One.

As if the big Android announcement wasn’t enough, AT&T also announced that it would be launching not one, but two WebOS-powered devices this year from Palm. Will they simply be versions of the Pre and Pixi, compatible with AT&T’s 3G network? Or will they be entirely new devices?

Thanks to its iPhone exclusivity, AT&T could very well wind up the only carrier in the U.S. to offer a handset with every major smartphone OS. On the other hand, this could just be a move to strengthen AT&T’s stable of devices before that exclusive deal ends and Verizon gets its paws on the Apple phone. [From: Engadget and Engadget]

He also showed how to rappel down an elevator shaft and even rappel up a suspension river bridge. Have confidence in your ability, he said.

In the film, he goes it alone. But he says that while he would be suspicious of everyone, wanting to find people to communicate with would give him a reason to live.

The program struck me as a mini “Life After People”; well, maybe there are a few people.

  • ARTICLE: Moto’s new Backflip comparison pics

    Hello from Vegas!

No sooner did I land at McCarran Airport this afternoon, than I was whisked away to Motorola’s press event on the eve of the International Consumer Electronics Show. There, I met up with Noah, John and Aaron, who have already been hard at work covering CES and were now assessing the latest announcement from the infamous Droid maker.

Moto unveiled its latest (but — the company promises — definitely not its last) Android handset: The Backflip. The unique device sports a 3.1-inch touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard that folds backwards. And that’s not the only unusual thing about this phone; there’s also a touchpad on the backside of the display component. (So if you’re holding it with two hands, you can swipe to navigate screens using the fingers on the back.) The company announced plans to release APIs to let developers innovate different ways to use the touchpad.

Motorola’s looking at a Q1 launch in Europe and parts of Asia, but there’s no word on when it will land in the U.S.

    The Motorola Backflip Android phone

Look for more details on this and other news from the PhoneDog editors soon. In the mean time, enjoy these fast comparisons between it and Moto’s other Android phones, the Cliq (on the left) and the Droid (on the right).

In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some more firm dates applied to both Project Natal—maybe even getting a peek at some non-game related demonstrations—and Game Room, confirmation of which leaked earlier today. LAS VEGAS – Jan. 6, 2010 – The Consumer Electronics Association kicked off the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) tonight with a pre-show opening keynote by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Entertainment & Devices President Robbie Bach.

Over 110,000 manufacturers, content providers, corporate buyers, engineers and media people converge each year in Las Vegas to identify the latest trends in consumer technology. More than 2,500 exhibitors show off their gadgets and technologies — from e-readers and 3-D televisions to free-standing solar panel systems.

During his keynote Ballmer highlighted the unprecedented innovation in the consumer electronics industry during 2009. Despite the economic turmoil the industry continued to deliver exciting new products and services at pace and, in Ballmer’s view, is set up for continued success

    GMC Urban Utility Concept

GM has teased its new GMC Urban Utility Concept (mentioned previously as the GMC Granite) prior to its debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show on Monday. The concept hints at a new segment GMC may venture into to compete with the likes of Kia’s Soul and Nissan’s Cube.

“We’ve designed a new breed of truck that’s as efficient as it is chic, innovative as it is functional,” says Frank Saucedo. “Our goal was to create the next generation of urban mobility, fusing a flexible, functional social space with an urban-box design that’s equally at home at the cabin or the club.”

We’ll find out more info next week at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

  • The Invisible OLED Laptop to End All Laptops [Laptops]

It’s only a proof of concept, but this is laptop with a clear OLED screen—but a stone’s throw from those floating 3D displays of Avatar. Practical? Not necessarily. The future? OBVIOUSLY.

The resolution, I don’t know. It’s pixely, but let’s not quibble.

You see right through the thing, then something appears on the screen (like a white background), and you can’t see through it anymore.

Are you processing this? No, you can’t be. It’s only 2010. Man wasn’t prepared for this kind of technology yet. The brain hasn’t evolved enough. We’re primates. Squirrels. Slugs.

Maybe in 100 or 200 years, the great artists of the world will reflect on what’s happened today and make some sort of sense of it all. Until then, we’ll just keep on breathing, in, out. Until then, we’ll weep.

  • Police Tend To Notice Something Like a Guy Dragging a Coke Machine Down The Road [Crime]

Oh Tennessee, you have been in rare form recently. The latest tale comes to us courtesy of Nicholas Nunley, who hooked a Coke machine to his pickup outside a Dollar General then began dragging it down the road.

Amazingly, an eyewitness noticed the one truck on the road with a vending machine engulfed in sparks dragging behind, and called the police. Apparently unfamiliar with the effect of drag, Nunley tried unsuccessfully to evade capture. After a Taser relaxation session, Nunley was hauled off to prison, where he is undoubtedly comparing notes with the Hill family from Walmart. [NBC-2 via Arbroth via Neatorama]

  • Sprint Overdrive Mobile WiMax Hub Lets Five People Share One Fat Connection [WiMax]

Sprint’s Overdrive hub is a lot more than a cellular modem: It’s got dual 4G/3G connectivity, shared connections with up to five devices over Wi-Fi, and can serve as a sort of mini NAS, with shared microSD storage.

Early leaks of the device were mostly right, but given that the Wi-Fi range is even further than expected—150ft, Sprint and Sierra claim—actually undersold it a bit. (WiMax is fast enough, and that Wi-Fi range is long enough, that you could conceivably use one of these as your primary source of internet at home. Nuts, basically.) A 1.4-inch LCD screen lets you know who’s connected to what and how, and gives you a precise battery reading—fixing one of the dumbest problems with Verizon’s Mifi. Actually, all around this device feels like the MiFi on steroids—it’s even a bit bigger, at about 3 x 3 x .6 inches, though that’s still pretty compact for what you’re getting here.

The Overdrive goes on sale January 10th for $100.

With a two-year service agreement, ha! Thought you were getting out of that one, didn’t you! Never. [Sprint]
