  • Warren Buffett Just Delivered A Death Blow To Cadbury

    warren peter buffett

Warren Buffett just voted “no” on Kraft’s proposal to issue more shares for Cadbury.

    Bye bye bidding war?

Well right now he doesn’t want to give Kraft a blank check, but there’s still a little hope:

Omaha, NE (BRK.A; BRK.B) Berkshire Hathaway has voted “no” on Kraft’s proposal to authorize the issuance of up to 370 million shares to facilitate the acquisition of Cadbury. Berkshire, taking into account both its own holdings and those of its pension funds, believes that the 138,272,500 Kraft shares it owns – 9.4% of the total outstanding – make it the company’s largest shareholder.

The share-issuance proposal, if enacted, will give Kraft a blank check allowing it to change its offer to Cadbury – in any way it wishes – from the transaction presented to shareholders in the proxy statement. And we worry very much that, indeed, there will be an additional change from the revision announced this morning. To state the matter simply, a shareholder voting “yes” today is authorizing a huge transaction without knowing its cost or the means of payment.

Our understanding is that Kraft must announce its final offer for Cadbury by January 19th. If we conclude at that point that the offer does not destroy value for Kraft shareholders, we will change our vote to “yes.” At this time, however, we believe no shareholder should vote “yes” when he can’t possibly know what he is voting for.

  • Matti Multiplex to go 3-D

    Matti Multiplex to Go 3-D

    Quote:

Nearly four years ago, Jeffrey Katzenberg, one of the most influential persons in American Cinema, was inspired while watching the adventure-filled Christmas animated movie, “The Polar Express” in three dimensions (3-D). The DreamWorks Animation CEO gathered his team immediately afterwards. “I have seen the future of cinema, and it is 3-D,” he said. “…Whoever gets into it at the beginning … is going to profit the most.”

The Addis Abeba entertainment scene is finally catching up to this trend as Matti Multiplex Cinema is in the process of procuring 3-D film screening equipment at a cost of over seven million Br. The cinema administration is consulting with Christie Digital Systems, a Canadian company whose projectors are used on more digital screens worldwide than any other manufacturer, to purchase one such projector needed for the screenings.

“The imaging equipment under survey includes a digital media server – a hard drive system, similar to a computer’s hard disk – that will replace the 35mm reels and DVDs with a storage device,” says Sofonias Yifru, cinema manager. “The combination of the server, together with an assortment of lenses, will all have 35mm, high definition, 3-D capability.”

Do not forget the continuous supply of 3-D glasses to be dispensed to audiences every show, as well.

The 50-unit Dolby 6.1 format sound system, already installed in the third-floor cinema hall, is said to be compatible with the new projection system as one of the prerequisites for the project, according to the manager. The installation is planned for this auditorium, which is also a multipurpose hall, and one of three cinemas the multiplex houses. It is the largest of the group, with a seating capacity of 438 persons, 78 of which are in the balcony (VIP section).

The move was decided partly due to the demands and expectations of audiences.

“They had come to watch movies that were released [worldwide] in 3D, but we were not ready for that,” Yisfalem Asrat, acting general manager, said.

The other portion of the decision was based on the fact that Hollywood is now releasing much of the big movies in 3-D, as Katzenberg predicted. The US box office grossed unprecedented earnings that put the blockbusters of previous decades to shame. The biggest earning movies of 2009 were dominated by 3-D movies, of which “Avatar,” the James Cameron-directed 3-D movie premiered worldwide at 236 million dollars, breaking the opening record in the US. The movie is currently showing at Matti in its 2-D version.

“We expect at least 18 3-D movies to be released in 2010 alone, mainly from Disney,” Sofonias said.

Although the cinema officials claim that no plans are set on the prices the 3-D experience will incur on the audience, they say the assessment showed the move to be a viable venture. In a January 2009 review of the market, 3-D theaters in the US showing the same film as a 2-D theater sold 3.5 times as many tickets.

The spectacle of the three dimensional film was first projected in Ethiopia on the occasion of the arrival of the World Cup in Addis Abeba, on November 2009. The Millennium Hall hosted the event with over 200 people attending every screening.

“The experience was impeccable,” Tilahun Hailemichael says. “I mean come on. I still have the glasses from the show. I am going to be the first in line when this thing materialises.”

Brehan Ayele, who was also present at the screening of the history of football and the World Cup said few things startled him in his life as this 3-D experience did.

“It is a very personalised approach to entertainment, in my opinion,” he says. “It appeals to you and your senses alone. I did not even notice anything around me.”

The one thing these two men seem to agree on is the quality and realistic impression of the animated portions of the football film. The actual footage: not so much. They both believe it will be a heart-racing show for thrillers and action movies.

The deals with the Hollywood distributors work on an income-sharing basis, according to Yisfalem.

“We have strong ties with Disney and Warner Brothers, and they are happy with the work we are doing,” he stated. “We hope for the 3-D venture to continue in the same manner. Moreover, the quality of the screenings will not be compromised as the 35mm films, too, used to be projected through digital projectors,” Yisfalem says.

Matti has already screened 2-D versions of 3-D Hollywood releases including “Up,” “Cloudy, with a Chance of Meatballs”, “Ice Age 3”, and the recent disaster movie “2012.” It is currently showing 2-D versions of the three-dimensional releases “A Christmas Carol” starring Jim Carrey and “Avatar.”

Known for introducing Hollywood flicks within days of their release, the cinema has been setting trends by bringing new films with Amharic subtitles. Furthering its scope of business and reaching additional audiences, it opened a branch in Mekelle, in February 2009.

  • In Odd Coincidence, App Store Hits 3 Billion Downloads Milestone on GPhone Day [Digital Daily]

Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes App Store has hit another milestone: More than 3 billion applications downloaded. Impressive considering it’s been a little over 3 months since the App Store crossed the 2 billion downloads mark. Even more so when you remember, as CEO Steve Jobs reminds us in a gloating press release, that those 3 billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months.

“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Jobs. “The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

Sadly, for “the competition”, there’s really no disagreeing with him. At present, there are some 127,632 applications available for the iPhone and iPod touch. There are a little over 4,000 available for Research in Motion’s (RIMM) Blackberry, 800+ available for Palm’s (PALM) Pre and Pixi and some 10,000 available for devices running Google’s (GOOG) Android OS, among them the Nexus One, the super-smartphone Google will uncrate later this morning.

And speaking of the Nexus One, what an odd coincidence that the App Store would hit a milestone like this on the very day that Google is to launch its flagship Android device, eh? You couldn’t ask for better timing from a PR perspective, could you?

  • Palm’s Biggest Problem: Sprint [Digital Daily]

sprintstore-150x150“Were not for its lack of distribution, inadequate advertising, and resulting limited developer community, Palm would be shipping far higher unit volumes than it does today.” So begins a research note from Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum that says the end of Palm’s carrier exclusivity with Sprint (S) can’t come soon enough. According to Gelblum limited distribution in the US through the number three wireless carrier has hamstrung Palm by limiting the addressable market for the company’s new super-smartphones, the Pixi and Pre.

“We believe much of the scale issues Palm has experienced to date have been a function of its exclusive distribution agreement in the US with Sprint, which despite having deployed advertising dollars to the Palm brand, has seen negative net sub adds for 9 quarters and has had a mixed marketing message in its handset portfolio simultaneously promoting Palm, the Samsung Instinct, HTC Hero, and LG Fusion,” Gelblum writes. “However, we expect this to change rapidly in 2010 as the CEOs of both AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) stated last summer that each would carry Palm webOS products after the exclusivity with Sprint expires which we expect to happen in calendar Q1 of 2010.”

And once Palm has enough multi-carrier distribution support, well, lookout. With Sprint, Palm has an addressable market of 26 million potential subscribers. With Sprint, Verizon AND AT&T, that market spikes to 196 million. Throw in China Telecom and it spikes again to 406 million. That’s a large addressable market and one that will undoubtedly juice WebOS development. And a richer Palm apps environment will attract more subscribers to Palm and, in theory, bootstrap the company into relevance.

  • Fat family tries to change its ways

In the midst of the holiday bustle you might have missed a new TLC reality series called “One Big Happy Family.” The series centers on the Coles family of Indian Trail, NC, a family of four, all of whom weigh more than 300 pounds.

    Meet the family

Norris, the dad, his 41 and weighs 340 pounds. He’s a stay-at-home dad who buys items at yard sales and sells them on the Internet to make extra money, and is basically disabled from injuries related to his weight. Mom Tameka, 36, weighs 380 pounds. She works two jobs, as a customer service rep for an insurance company and in a group home for people with developmental disabilities.

She says her biggest obstacle is not having time to exercise, and that she didn’t get really big until after she had her kids.

“Food for me, and for my family, I believe, is comfort,” she said in the first episode of the show. “It makes us feel good.” That statement is accompanied by pictures of the family sharing a meal of fried chicken wings, lasagna smothered in cheese, great slabs of white bread Texas toast and lettuce slathered in ranch dressing.

At age 16, daughter Amber weighs 348 pounds and says it’s hard to see her friends eat whatever they want without gaining weight. She’s a member of the school color guard says her weight makes it hard for her to keep up.

Shane, 14, weighs 308 pounds. “I’m fresh and no one had swagger like mine,” he says. “I’m one-of-a-kind.” He says he has associates rather than friends but it doesn’t matter to him.

    Out on the town

The family visits a water park in the first episode of the series, where, as you can imagine, most of the patrons were significantly smaller than them.

Mom says her family members need to be proud of themselves and happy regardless of their size and that she’s going to “strut [her] stuff” regardless of what other people think.

After an inner tube ride the family enjoys a funnel cake covered in powder sugar while the kids reflect on their relationship with food. Shane says he was eating fried chicken before he had teeth, while Amber called food “my drug” and notes that her parents would give her food to make her feel better.

They wanted to go on a ride that required two people to share a tube but had a weight limit of 400 pounds per tube. People laughed at them; Amber said she just blocked it out, while Shane, who said he isn’t happy with his weight but is comfortable with it, said he’s not self-conscious but he is mad when people laugh.

    Facing the truth

The family takes Shane to the doctor because his blood sugar had been high, and though he was supposed to be avoiding sugary sodas they found a can in his room the morning of his appointment. He weighed in at 336 pounds, meaning he gained 28 pounds since his last visit.

The doctor said he’s “on the road to developing diabetes” and needs to lose weight. In particular he needs to cut out sugary drinks and exercise daily. Shane says the whole family needs to make the changes together.

In the following episode, Shane wakes up early to swim laps, but “baby diva” Amber didn’t want to go to color guard practice just because her brother needed exercise. The parents went to practice with her to support her, but it wasn’t pretty.

    Mom’s motivation

Mom says she’s going to motivate everyone to get healthier and they’re going to hate her but it will be better for everyone in the long run.

For dinner that night she made turkey burgers and vegetables cooked in the microwave. Dad called it “a hot mess” while Amber said her plate looked “green” and dad said it was “horrible” with no flavor. Shane, on the other hand, said it was great. Mom said it was a good first start in the family as a whole has to change.

Mom and Shane quickly outlined against dad and Amber, with Shane throwing food out while dad and Amber protested.

    The truth gets uglier

Tameka goes to the doctor’s office with Norris because his blood pressure has been high. While the doctor lectured him about his weight, he says he was thinking about his favorite burger place, which is next door to the doctor’s office.

After that, the whole family went to the pediatrician’s office, where the family learned the hard truth about the kids’ health.

For Amber’s size, by age 18 she should only be 120 or 130 pounds, with a maximum weight of 180. She says she might have been 180 pounds when she was 11. With a body mass index of 60, she is classified as super obese (higher than morbidly obese). She says hearing that news was “scary” and that she “didn’t know it was that bad.”

The doctor says both kids have to make lifestyle changes in order to save their lives.

Norris says hearing about his kids’ potential health problems “like getting smacked in the face twice” and everyone seems to be scared straight, at least temporarily. They all vow to have each other’s backs in the process of getting healthier, and prove it by going on a walk together.

Amber says she’s worked hard to be “the perfect big girl” and she’s scared about what shall be without that.

The show airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern, with two half-hour episodes each week.

  • Apple Says Competition Doesn’t Have A Chance To Catch Up To App Store

    Apple App Store Turns One

As Google (NSDQ: GOOG) prepares to make a significant announcement at its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. this morning, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) tried to make news of its own by saying that more than three billion apps have been downloaded from the iTunes App Store. Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs said: “Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before…, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

Roughly three months ago, Apple said on Sept. 28 that users had downloaded more than two billion apps since the store launched in July 2008. At the time, it said there were more than 85,000 apps available. Apple did not update that figure today.

  • Lifan Motors sets up assembly plant

Yangfan Motors Joins Ranks of Local Auto Assemblers

    Quote:

Yangfan Motors Plc, registered in Ethiopia by Lifan Motors, the Chinese auto manufacturer, has unveiled its new model automobiles during the launching ceremony held on Tuesday, December 9, 2009, at the Sheraton Addis.

Yangfan has become the fourth car assembling plant in Ethiopia, all of which benefit from tax and duty incentives. The others are Holland Car Plc, BH Trading and Manufacturing Plc, and Belayab Enterprise.

The three Yangfan models, whose parts are supplied by Lifan, are LIFAN 320, 520 and 620. The 520 being produced by Holland Car Plc was using parts supplied by the Chinese company until the two companies ended their relations in June 2009.

The disagreements were over the amount of shares Lifan wanted to buy from Holland Car, which was established by Ethiopian and Dutch investors. It was described that the three models go 15km, 18km and 20km per litre. Their prices are 179,800 Br, 189,800 Br and 219,000 Br.

The benefits from foreign companies investing in Ethiopia to open assembly plants were discounted by a senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The value-added factor of these companies would not be more than five per cent, he said. He did not think they deserved as much incentive as those companies who use local resources for up to 30pc of their inputs, interms of value adding.

Another concern, according to this official, would be the amount of foreign currency that would be lost if or when these companies opened letters of credit and repatriated their profits.

“The benefit of technology transfer is also minimal, as these companies produced to little locally,” he argued.

State Minister of Trade and Industry (MoTI) Tadesse Haile, who was the guest of honour at the launching ceremony, disagreed strongly with this official.

“Even if the value adding factor of such a company would have is too small, we want to encourage them because we believe this is the first step towards building our technological capacity,” he said. “It is also better than importing finished cars.”

The amount of local raw materials the companies would use to produce the vehicles would increase through time, giving room for local manufacturers to produce parts, Tadesse said.

“Our people are also paying less for locally assembled cars than they would have paid for imported cars,” he added.

The assembly plant is located on 8,464sqm of land in the Kality district rented from a private company, according to Juequan Pan, general manager of Yangfan.

Juequan’s company will soon have its own plot either by purchasing the plot where it is now located or by acquiring land at the industrial zone in Mojo, he said.

Parts for 64 cars have already arrived at the Port of Djibouti while more parts for 24 other cars will soon be shipped from China, the manager said.

The company’s initial investment was stated to be 1.5 million dollar, with plans to boost it to five million dollars by the end of 2010.

  • 5 Reasons Why RSS Readers Still Rock

Recently I wrote about the decline of RSS Readers as a way for people to keep up with news. I noted that while many people still use RSS Readers, usage has decreased due to the emergence of real-time and social flows of information via Twitter, Facebook and other such services. The post sparked a fascinating discussion, with over 160 comments.

What I learned from that discussion is that while the RSS Reader market is indeed in decline, there are still a number of compelling use cases for RSS Readers. Not to mention new tools worth checking out. So in this more optimistic post, I list 5 reasons why you should continue to use RSS Readers.

    Sponsor

My conclusions in the previous post still stand: 1) Google now dominates what’s left of the RSS Reader market; and 2) RSS reading is a very fragmented experience circa 2009/2010 due to Twitter, Facebook, start pages like Netvibes, Firefox bookmarks, and more. However, a lot of commenters wrote that they still use RSS Readers each and every day. Here are the main reasons why:

    1. Control over Information Flow

RSS Readers allow users to control their flow of information, whereas it’s impossible to keep up with the Twitter firehose of real-time information. Mathew Ballad (comment 11) put it well:

"I tend to check Google Reader multiple times a day. While I do keep up with bigger news through Friendfeed or Twitter, I like to keep up with multiple Graphic Design blogs, tech blogs, entertainment blogs, photography blogs and Apple blogs on my own. I just can’t see myself ditching RSS Readers for something that I really don’t have much control over."

It’s not just about controlling your stream of daily news. Many people have feeds that they just don’t want to miss. Tim Bray has a folder of feeds in NetNewsWire that he feels is "unacceptable when I don’t at least glance at everything those people have to say."

Some people would argue that it’s a thankless task trying to control your RSS Reader. I am one of those people and I long ago gave up trying to keep my ‘unread’ count at zero. Indeed nowadays I don’t even try to mark as ‘read’ my email – using Gmail, I just let it all flow in and mark the ones I should reply to with stars.

On a similar point, RSS pioneer Dave Winer remarked (comment 80) that Google Reader "has the wrong view of RSS." In a follow-up post, he wrote that "fundamentally, Google Reader views RSS as email," by which I think he means users feel compelled to read everything in it. His view is that "reading every story is a meaningless concept" and that RSS Readers need to find a way around this issue.

    2. Evolving User Interfaces

Some readers are expecting RSS Readers to transform their UIs in 2010, in particular for "processing life and news streams in the same interface." (Marco A Torres)

This has already happened to a degree in Google Reader, which has many nice social sharing features. @businessquests (comment 57) called Google Reader "a monitoring and intelligence tool enabled by tagging and publication of tag-based RSS feeds."

    Eric (comment 19) agreed, commenting:

"I use it [Google Reader] not only as a constantly evolving newspaper, but to share and to create new snippets using the “Note in Reader…” bookmarklet. I also subscribe to others’ interests and see what they have marked to share with me."

Eric also noted that he gets breaking news in Google Reader, thanks to its support of the real-time standard PubSubHubbub.

However a number of people complained that Google Reader isn’t evolving fast enough in terms of user experience. I would put myself in that camp too. So, like me, you may want to check out some new feed reading innovations. Feedly (one of our Top 10 Semantic Web Products of 2009), Fever (one of our Top 10 RSS & Syndication Technologies of 2009) and my6sense (an iPhone app – our review) are 3 apps that received multiple mentions from our readers.

We use Fever internally at ReadWriteWeb and I just today downloaded my6sense onto my iPhone. As an aside, note that two of those apps (Feedly and my6sense) integrate Twitter as well as RSS feeds.

    3. Tracking Twitter

It’s not necessarily an either/or situation between RSS Readers and Twitter. Lynne Pope from New Zealand pointed out (comment 44) that she uses Google Reader to track some Twitter accounts:

"Time zone differences mean a lot of good information can be missed in a tweet stream. Pulling the important streams into a reader means the information is readily available."

    4. Mobile News

A number of people remarked that they commonly read their feeds via a mobile version of an RSS Reader. Something for those of us who are sick of being tied to PCs to do more of, perhaps. Bill (comment 46) wrote:

"I use NewsRob on Android to pull the most recent 250 articles from Google Reader via my home wifi. Then I walk out the door and head for the commuter train, where I will read my feeds while other poor souls are stuck with the newspaper. Same on the way home and late at night when I’m rocking the baby to sleep."

    5. Categorized News

Perhaps some of us are finding RSS Readers difficult to use nowadays because we don’t use them efficiently. If you spend some initial time setting up your Reader and categorizing your feeds, then chances are you will get a lot more out of it. Randy Orrison (comment 78) described a good use case that you may want to emulate:

"I have folders in Google Reader for the blogs that I check every day, new release feeds for software I use (I could never remember to check all 20+ websites regularly), and down at the bottom of the folder list feeds from busy aggregators (like TechMeme) and news sites (like the BBC)."

    Conclusion

Reading through all 160+ comments on my post restored some of my faith in RSS Readers. Viva la read/write Web! I’m going to test out some of the tools people suggested, find new ways to integrate Twitter streams with my RSS feeds, read more on my iPhone using my6sense and other services, and do some re-ordering in my Google Reader.

What are your thoughts now about RSS Readers, given the discussion summarized here?

Apple’s App Store Downloads Top Three Billion

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced that more than three billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store by iPhone® and iPod touch® users worldwide.

“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months — this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

How much is that in fart apps? And how many apps per minute would Apple sell if you counted time in dog years? What about fox years?

  • MIPS Joins the Push to Move Android Beyond Phones

As the tech world readies itself for the unveiling of Google’s Android-based — and much-hyped — Nexus One, MIPS Technologies Inc. this morning said it will team with a host of partners to showcase new Android-based offerings at this week’s CES. Among them are set-top boxes, a netbook and a social media center designed to enable consumers to consume and share TV content.

MIPS provides processors and architectures for home entertainment, portable media and communications gadgets, and today’s announcement isn’t unexpected given the company’s well-documented plans to bring Android to its entertainment offerings. MIPS is also using CES to tout its new membership in Adobe’s Open Screen Project, which aims to expand support for Flash beyond the traditional Internet to phones and other connected devices. The 18-month-old project has garnered backing from a host of media and tech heavyweights, including MTV Networks, ARM, Cisco, Intel, LG Electronics and Verizon Wireless, all of which are looking to enable consumers to view web-based video on a broad range of devices, operating systems and networks.

MIPS is joined on the Android bandwagon by fellow chip company ARM, semiconductor design firms like Aricent and Mentor Graphics, and others. Meanwhile Freescale Semiconductor is working on an Android-based netbook design, as is Qualcomm. While most of the attention surrounding Android is focused on mobile — more specifically, Android vs. the iPhone operating system — the flurry of activity from those in the chip space is a clear indication that Android is attractive not just to phone makers but also to hardware vendors and service providers in a wide variety of industries. Which bodes well for the concept of the Androidification of everything.

  • Shooting Handcuffed Children

    ‘The occupied government of Afghanistan
and the United Nations have both concluded that U.S.-led troops
recently dragged eight sleeping children out of their beds, handcuffed
some of them, and shot them all dead. While this apparently constitutes
an everyday act of kindness, far less intriguing than the vicious
singeing of his pubic hairs by Captain Underpants, it is at least a
variation on the ordinary American technique of murdering men, women,
and children by the dozens with unmanned drones.’
