  • Paul Krugman Sings Song of Economic Gloom

Princeton University economist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman made his bones as a scholar of international trade issues.

Unfortunately, what he has gleaned from the interactions of currencies and international capital flows makes him decidedly pessimistic about what lies ahead for the U.S. economy. Against a climate where most expect a recovery and where policy makers are laying the groundwork for an eventual unwind of the unprecedented stimulus of the last two years, Krugman reckons the odds are good that years of moribund activity lie ahead for the U.S.

“I’m deeply worried about what comes from here,” Krugman said, speaking at the American Economic Association’s annual conference in Atlanta Monday. Recoveries caused by an unwinding of excessive financial sector borrowing are typically “slow and painful” but they also usually are joined by a currency devaluation that helps drive up exports.

In this experience, the U.S. is also facing a deleveraging crisis. While the dollar has been under pressure, it has done so in an environment of weak global growth. As a result, Krugman said, the U.S. is unlikely to get the sort of export growth that traditionally is the engine of recovery. That’s true even with a currency under pressure, he said.

Looking across financial history, Krugman said, “we don’t really have a lot of role models” for a positive outcome. One can look to Japan, which is not a heart-warming story, he said, adding “the only other role model is the Great Depression, which was ended by a very large fiscal stimulus project called World War II.”

Krugman’s pessimism is further rooted in what he believes was an insufficient government reaction to the crisis. The economist said “radical” spending action beyond 2009’s $800 billion fiscal stimulus was needed. He said some of the banks saved by government capital injections should likely have been nationalized and forced to lend to businesses at higher levels.

Krugman also said the Federal Reserve should have been even more aggressive with its asset purchases, especially since interest rate policy has largely become ineffective. The asset-buying effort is set to wind down in the first quarter of this year, and many in markets are worried about rising mortgage rates once there is an exit by the central bank, currently the largest buyer in this hard-hit sector. Krugman said the Fed should also be willing to tolerate a higher level of inflation.

What’s more, Krugman said, a further drop in the dollar would be a good thing, and he even welcomed China selling the currency, all as a way to help rebalance and stimulate the economy.

Krugman’s views count as particularly grim amid a community of economists who generally expect some sort of growth this year. While many of the most well-known economists attending the AEA meeting this year were gloomy — Harvard University’s Martin Feldstein worried about a drop back into recession — most forecasts see growth moving along at a modestly positive course over this year and next.

Krugman’s warnings came on a day where a key report on factory activity in December expanded at its fastest pace in more than three years. Hiring data for the last month of the year comes on Friday, and many are expecting a further moderation in job losses, which is itself welcome relative to the huge job declines seen over most of last year.

Time will tell if Krugman or the consensus view of forecasters prevails. But if the Princeton economist is right, 2010 will be a tough year, and the Fed will be forced to abandon the start of a normalization of policy that officials have been laying the ground work for over recent months. And that will be a tough thing for financial markets.

  • Lenovo Combines Laptop With Tablet, Using Two Chips – Digits – WSJ

    By Don Clark

Thinking about a tablet computer instead of a laptop? Lenovo is offering to sell you both at the same time.

The China-based computer maker is using the Consumer Electronics Show this week to announce an unusual hybrid product called the IdeaPad U1 that covers the two categories. It can function as a conventional clamshell-style laptop, which runs Microsoft Windows, uses a microprocessor from Intel and weighs in at about 3.8 pounds.

    Lenovo
Lenovo’s new IdeaPad U1 hybrid laptop

Alternatively, a user can detach the 11.6-inch, 1.6-pound screen and use it like a tablet, Lenovo says. The display includes all the features of a computer, including a Linux-based operating system and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip, which is not based on the x86 technology used in most PCs but a design licensed from ARM Holdings.

Interesting take on the combo laptop-tablet. The HP TC1100 was a similar device, but it was more of a slate with a detachable keyboard than this laptop with detachable slate. I’m curious to see how this works in person.

  • MMA/Jujitsu

Hi all, I just did a search on this forum and had no hits on anyone training in MMA or Jujitsu, so I thought I would start a thread and see if there is anyone who trains.

I’ve only been taking classes for six months now, but I love it. I’m a white belt in the jujitsu, but I want to start competing in about six months or so.

I was taking meds for the first five months of my training, but things are a little trickier in practice now that I am injecting insulin. My temptation is to just carbo-load without an injection before practice, but I know it is better for me to strike a balance.

My workouts are between one hour and two hours, and fortunately I have not gone low yet. My greatest fear is that I’ll go low right about the time I’m being choked out while rolling, and I won’t get a chance to tap out as a result. I guess I’m wondering if anyone here does these kinds of workouts, and do you need to carb load, or does you liver dump enough glucose to get by?

The nicest part of the injecting for me is that I’m up 15 pounds since I started the insulin. Guys that used to throw me around can’t do that anymore, and it’s easier for me to maintian positional advantages, wrist control, etc with the extra weight. If I do ever compete, this will come bak to bite me in the a$$ when I try to cut weight, but for now I’m just happy not be frail anyore.

Has anyone here had to cut weight for any kind of match? If you also inject insulin, did your weight cut involve any cutting back on your insulin dosage?

  • Neko Chigura: Traditional Japanese Cat Bed

    Neko Chigura

One of my favorite French cat style websites OhMyCat posted these beautiful photos of a traditional Japanese cat bed known as neko chigura. Based on a design for an infant cradle, each neko chigura is handcrafted using rice straw, which keeps kitty warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

This video shows how the beds are made, with help from some gorgeous feline assistants:

  • What does the Nexus One mean for Google Voice, Apps?

With the clock ticking on tomorrow’s unveiling of the Nexus One, it seems most of the focus has been on the hardware and plan details (see below). But looking at the Nexus One as just another Android phone that Google happens to sell is to miss its potential significance as a hardware platform for Google’s increasingly popular software offerings. Specifically, the Nexus One could have big implications for Google Voice and Google Apps.

One of the ways that a Google-branded phone makes the most sense is as a platform for the company to expand the functionality and user base of Google Voice. With the Nexus One launch, we may see Google Voice open up to more users, and we might also see the introduction of long-awaited number portability to the service.

  • Startup2Startup – The Return Path Story and Email Deliverability

Ok – so in addition to the Boulder events, I also go to Bay Area events.  I’ve got a Return Path board meeting on 1/21 in the Bay Area and that evening Matt Blumberg – Return Path’s CEO – is going to be presenting at the great Startup2Startup series that Dave McClure puts on with the help of his glorious sponsors.

I’ll be there along with a bunch of other great folks (I even paid my $90 for my ticket).  Matt’s got a fascinating story and Return Path is another company in my world that had an awesome 2009 and is poised for a phenomenal 2010 (how’s that for adverbs adjectives.)  Matt will be talking about the history of Return Path (dating back to 1999), lessons he’s learned, and best practices in email deliverability.

If you don’t know Matt, he’s got a great blog titled “OnlyOnce” (since you can only be a “first time CEO once and this is Matt’s journey.”)  Some special secrets about Matt – he was on the FeedBurner board so he can tell you funny stories about Twitter’s COO and he’s run two marathons with me so he can tell you funny stories about things I say after 4+ hours running.

January 21st, 6pm – 9:30pm at the Garden Court Hotel on 520 Cowper Street in Palo Alto.  Sign up now.  Be there or be forever destined to have email deliverability issues.

Enough with the calendar stuff.  I promise my next post will be a long essay about some obscure topic that will generate a lot of controversy.  Or maybe I’ll just list out the marathons I’m going to run in 2010.

  • Solar Roads – The Future?

    http://www.solarroadways.com/main.html

Basically this is a new road ‘surface’ which underneath has electronics, solar panels, etc, which collects and stores solar energy.
That energy is then used to ‘create’ the line markings etc on the roads, heat the road surface in winter to melt snow and ice, and also have recharge stations along the way so electric vehicles can recharge.

    Quote:

    Solar Road Panel™

The Solar Roadway™ is a series of structurally-engineered solar panels that are driven upon. The idea is to replace all current petroleum-based asphalt roads, parking lots, and driveways with Solar Road Panels™ that collect and store solar energy to be used by our homes and businesses. This renewable energy replaces the need for the current fossil fuels used for the generation of electricity. This, in turn, cuts greenhouse gases literally in half.
Each individual panel consists of three basic layers:

Road Surface Layer – translucent and high-strength, it is rough enough to provide great traction, yet still passes sunlight through to the solar collector cells. It is capable of handling today’s heaviest loads under the worst of conditions. Weatherproof, it protects the electronics layer beneath it.

Electronics Layer – Contains a large array of cells, the bulk of which will contain solar collecting cells with LEDs for "painting" the road surface. These cells also contain the "Super" or "Ultra" caps that store the sun’s energy for later use. Since each Solar Road Panel™ manages its own electricity generation, storage, and distribution, they can heat themselves in northern climates to eliminate snow and ice accumulation. No more snow/ice removal and no more school/business closings due to inclement weather. The on-board microprocessor controls lighting, communications, monitoring, etc. With a communications device every 12 feet, the Solar Roadway™ is an intelligent highway system.

Base Plate Layer – While the electronics layer collects and stores the energy from the sun, it is the base plate layer that distributes power (collected from the electronics layer) and data signals (phone, TV, internet, etc.) "downline" to all homes and businesses connected to the Solar Roadway™. The power and data signals are passed through each of the four sides of the base plate layer. Weatherproof, it protects the electronics layer above it.
    Overview

When multiple Solar Road Panels™ are interconnected, the intelligent Solar Roadway™ is formed. These panels replace current driveways, parking lots, and all road systems, be they interstate highways, state routes, downtown streets, residential streets, or even plain dirt or gravel country roads. Panels can also be used in amusement parks, raceways, bike paths, parking garage rooftops, remote military locations, etc. Any home or business connected to the Solar Roadway™ (via a Solar Road Panel™ driveway or parking lot) receives the power and data signals that the Solar Roadway™ provides. The Solar Roadway™ becomes an intelligent, self-healing, decentralized (secure) power grid.

The images below illustrate how the west can power the east in the evening and the east can power the west in the morning hours.

    North America North America

    Africa/Europe Africa and Europe

Imagine a world-wide system where the "lit" half of the world is always powering the "dark" half of the world!

Everyone has power. No more power shortages, no more roaming power outages, no more need to burn coal (50% of greenhouse gases). Less need for fossil fuels and less dependency upon foreign oil. Much less pollution. How about this for a long term advantage: an electric road allows all-electric vehicles to recharge anywhere: rest stops, parking lots, etc. They would then have the same range as a gasoline-powered vehicle. Internal combustion engines would become obsolete. Our dependency on oil would come to an abrupt end.

Seems legit. I do recall seeing something about this a week or so ago.

  • Verizon Orders 400,000 Palm Smartphones?

Rumour:A brief two-sentence post over at The Boy Genius Report claims today that Palm’s two webOS handsets, the Pre and the Pixi, are “beginning to appear” in Verizon’s inventory system, with Big Red having ordered 200,000 units of each model. For the mathematically-challenged, that means they’ll have 400,000 in total ready to unload.

The question this raises, of course, is whether this is good news or bad? Given that Palm and webOS were both hyped (mainly by an excitable tech press) as giant-slayers after their initial introduction, an order of this relatively small size could indicate Verizon does not share those expectations and isn’t planning to promote Palm’s new babies on the same level as their New Sensation, the Android-powered Motorola Droid – despite apparently getting upgraded models. Of course, it could also just mean that they’re being cautious. We’ll have to see how it plays out once the expected CES announcement is made…

  • Bachelorette Jillian And Ed Still Together, Jillian & Ed Swiderski

    Ed and Jillian
Jillian says they are a real-life couple, so if that’s true, that’s cool. Ed comes out and they smooch and it looks more real than a lot of couple reunions on this show. Ed says he’s extremely glad that he came back and he’s so happy. He says he knew he was going to propose in Spain. They talk about the proposal and smooch some more, but Jillian seems to be kissing him weirdly. Am I alone in this?

Chris asks them about the future and they say that Jillian is coming to Chicago for awhile and move in with Ed. They have family reunions and weddings to attend this summer and then she’s moving on September 1st. They say they will probably get married in the next 12 months. Wow, bold.

Audience question time. The first girl asks about the mankini shorts. Seriously, dude. It looked like he stole Jillian’s bikini bottoms. Second question is about bedroom problems and they say there are no more bedroom problems. Chris then gets the line of the night in, “A great country & western singer once said, ‘Love, it don’t come easy.’” Snerk. I heart Chris Harrison.

There is no announcement about the next Bachelor, which is interesting. I hope it’s Reid or Jake. You can vote at ABC.com. Thanks for reading, gang! See you back here in the fall!
Newsweek even goes so far as to ask that loaded question: Is The Bachelorette rigged? One need only look at this spring’s Bachelor finale to see similar soap opera-ish antics: the show’s star dumped the winning girl for the runner-up.

Speculation like this is to be expected when real-life seems so much like drama. Perhaps that goes to show that people who watch soap operas aren’t missing as much real-life as we think. Nah, I don’t know anyplace where everyone has been married or involved with everyone else at one time, as in a soap.

Here’s how the Jillian Harris and Ed Swiderski moment unfolded: first, Jillian had to reject Kiptyn. Then Jillian had to reject Reid, in a surprise return. Then Ed came on for the ultimate question.

“I want to be with you forever. I want a family with you. I want you to give me a hard time when we’re 80-years-old. Jillian, will you marry me?”
Ed said tonight “There’s nothing that would prevent me from getting down on one knee” that may not be the case.

And when Jillian rejected Kiptyn saying “In the mean time, I’ve fallen in love with somebody else.”

Unfortunately there is no post Finale interviews from Bachelorette , so we have to wait and see the direct reactions form Jillian Harris and Ed Swiderski (if any) to prove whether they are still together.
