  • Cheap Beer If You Check-In… Or Just Tweet.

Beer Taps from the EBA Beer Tasting by Andre CharlandOne of the most compelling aspects of the location-based service Foursquare is that they are increasingly enticing users to check-in to venues by partnering up to offer special deals to those who do. A person who checks-in at a coffee shop and shows the barista, may get a free coffee, for example. It’s a win-win for both the service and the venue because it gets people using the app more and gets people visiting the venue more. But what if users and venues go around Foursquare and start using Twitter for that?

That has started to happen recently, as venues are getting wise to the idea of using these special deals. For example, Patxi’s Pizza, a Bay Area-based restaurant, recently announced that it would offer a special deal to anyone who simply tweeted that they were at the restaurant, and showed their server the tweet. To be clear, they also have the same deal in place if you check-in on Foursquare, but using Twitter in a way similar to Foursquare is interesting.

One issue with venues offering these deals through Foursquare is that the service is still relatively small and unknown. Twitter, by comparison, is much larger and has become a known entity in the media and other areas of the mainstream. A public tweet by someone that they were at a certain restaurant is potentially a much more powerful form of free advertising for the venue than a Foursquare check-in.

Of course, there’s a downside too. Since Twitter is more popular, doing deals such as the tweet one could mean the restaurant would have to give out a lot more free stuff (depending on what the deal is, obviously). But again, it might be worth it for the free advertising.

Foursquare has another potential leg up as well. Because they’re predicated around the concept of the check-in, they can keep track of who is checking in the most and give out “mayorships.” So far, deals surrounding harder-to-obtain mayorships are at least just as popular as the check-in deals. And some venues appear willing to offer more to these known loyal customers. Patxi’s, for example, offers a you one free pizza a week if you’re the mayor. For checking-in or tweeting, you only get a free soft drink or $1 beer.

Another location-based service, Gowalla, is working on its own similar concept for venue deals. Since that service is largely based around the picking up and dropping of virtual goods at venues, if you got a special good, you could trade it for a free item at a restaurant, for example. This too, is more of a game element, and beyond what Twitter can easily do.

Still, I’d bet that we can expect to see a lot more of venues offering deals to people who tweet about being at a place. And because they don’t have to work on any sort of arrangement to get their deal placed in an app like Foursquare, there’s a much lower barrier to entry for these venues. They could simply tweet about how to secure the deal, as Patxi’s did.

And perhaps Twitter is even thinking of officially offering something along these lines when it rolls out its supposedly premium offering to businesses at some point this year, as it tries to pull in more revenues.

Then of course there’s the 800-pound gorilla in the room: Facebook. If and when Facebook implements its location element, their 300-million-plus user base will be awfully enticing for a lot of venues looking to promote.

  • Sports related question

Hey eveyone! I’m curious if there are any insulin injectors here that also participate in high intensity sports? Prior to my diagnosis, I did a lot of marathons and triathalons. I have cut back on that recently, but defintely want to get back into it this spring. I am also now very into MMA and jujitsu, which generally consists on 30 minutes of practicing techniques, and 45 minutes of rolling (fighting with a partner without punching).

I was dx 6 months ago, but started with my insulin only 3 weeks ago. I am generally paranoid about going low, but extremely so during practice. My strategy for dealing with that so far has been to carbo-load prior and during practice with gatorade and sports drinks. I know that this is less than ideal, but I have no idea how much I should reduce my insulin, how much I should drink sports drink, how much my liver can naturally keep my BG high, etc.

I feel like it doesn’t help being that MMA is a tough guy sport. They don’t really give me time to sit there and test myself mid-practice. Not that I’ve even told them what my diabetes issues are. It just doesn’t seem like the right forum to even bring it up. Has anyone here had a sit down with their coach about practice and game strategies for dealing with their D?

  • Lady Gaga Las Vegas Residency The Palms Casino Resort

Lady GaGa has been offered residency at a famed casino on the glitzy Las Vegas strip.

According to Sunday’s Daily Star, George Maloof, who owns The Palms Casino Resort, was “blown away” when the saucy “Poker Face” sensation performed at the popular Sin City destination last month.

Gaga sold out two shows in the desert metropolis in December and the gushing Maloof is ready to offer the pop star from New York City a multimillion dollar deal to become a star at The Palms. In fact, the wealthy playboy would love to have the singer become the headlining nightly act at the establishment. Millionaire Maloof describes the 23-year-old former stripper as a “perfect fit” for the casino and was impressed when she refused to join him at one of his nightclubs.

“She was just so professional,” Maloof told The Daily Star Sunday. “She’s not a partier. That was really refreshing,” he added. “She’s dedicated to being the top artist in the world.”

  • SiliconDust to Announce CableCard Product at CES

We’ve been hearing of something exciting coming from the SiliconDust shop – the company that brought us the ever-popular SiliconDust HDHomeRun dual tuner product (a favorite of mine) and it looks like this is the week we’ll be getting the details on it.

    SiliconDust HDHR

This hasn’t been officially announced or completely confirmed yet so we’ll have to wait for final confirmation later this week.  But on the SiliconDust forums, it’s been leaked that the company will be announcing a new CableCARD HDHomeRun product!  The official announcement with all of the details will come at CES later this week.  Here’s a screenshot leaked by a developer at SiliconDust earlier today:

    SiliconDust HDHR CableCard

The developer posted this screen-shot in response to questions and speculation on the forums about a new product – he also said

“We are quiet because we are busy – {More info at CES)

Very exciting news given SiliconDust’s excellent track record and the flexibility of the HDHomeRun Networked TV Tuners.  The recent elimination of the CableLabs certification requirement for the PC makes CableCard more accessible to all Windows 7 Media Center users.  Add to that the ongoing development of a plugin to bring CableCard to SageTV users and it’s exciting to even more HTPC enthusiasts.

More information coming soon – I can only hope there’s a multi-tuner CableCard possibility with this…

And we’ll soon find out more about the Ceton multi-tuner CableCard at CES as well.

  • Nanoparticles make biofuel production more efficient

Biofuel production currently involves a complex mixture of hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquids, along with one or more catalysts. Getting them all together and separating out the fuel can be a time-consuming challenge. Researchers have now used carbon nanotubes and oxidized metals to create a solid that is both hydrophilic and hydrophobic and sits between oil and alcohol layers, mediating their interactions.

Making biofuel using current methods can be a bit tedious. Recipes generally involve mixing some kind of bio-oil, often vegetable oil, with an alcohol, usually methanol, along with a catalyst such as lye. Once these have all been combined, they react to form the desired biofuel, glycerine, and some excess soap, water, and alcohol. All of these will, for the most part, separate into layers like with a vinaigrette dressing if allowed to sit for a long enough time.

  • Space City

RM13 billion ‘Space City’ near Seremban
    By SARBAN SINGH

SEREMBAN: A “Space City” project costing up to RM13bil, to be financed by a Dubai-based private pension fund from India, is set to take shape near here as early as the end of this year.

The project will be similar, although not in size, cost and lavishness, to Abu Dhabi’s RM750bil Space City project that will be built over the next 10 years.

The local Space City project will be built on 400ha near Bandar Sri Sendayan-Bandar Enstek near here, and close to the KL International Airport, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and the Education Ministry’s RM1.2bil complex which will house several institutes and universities, according to Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan in an interview.

“The ultra modern project will take shape in phases over 15 years … among the tallest structures under the first phase will be a skyscraper over 40 storeys high which will be the tallest building in the state,” he said.

“It is going to be built on a totally new concept and will be the nation’s most modern city. It is something that you don’t see anywhere else here,” he said, adding that the memorandum of understanding for the project would be inked in the middle of this year.

He said the pension fund has agreed to the terms and conditions to buy the land from Mentri Besar Inc.

“We have negotiated a deal and everything is in order. In fact the investors were here recently for a due diligence and they were extremely happy with the way the project will be carried out,” he said, adding that the state government did not give the pension fund any incentives for the purchase of the property.

The project, Mohamad said, would not be carried out on a joint venture basis between MBI and the pension fund.

“We only sold them the land based on set conditions and they will be bringing the cash from abroad to finance it. We would not be forking out any cash for the project,” he said.

Mohamad said he had also been briefed by the project’s London-based architects and US-based town planners on details of the project during a visit abroad recently.

He added that the Space City would also house the Formula One City where competing teams would be able to set up their research and development (R&D) and other facilities.

“They would no longer have to stay in Kuala Lumpur when they come here for the race. It can be taxing to have to commute between both points during the race, what more with the congestion in the federal capital,” he said.

At present, these teams use helicopters to ferry their officials from Kuala Lumpur to the F1 track in Sepang.

The first phase of the project would be a mixed development with residential and commercial properties.

“The residential properties would cost more than RM500,000 and locals would be encouraged to invest here. In fact, the developers would also be allowed to sell these properties to foreigners,” Mohamad said.

“What is certain is that the Space City project would help boost the property market here. In fact the former 513 Felda LBJ settlers who became millionaires after they sold their properties would be able to make a lot more if they decide to dispose of the 0.8ha we gave each family,” he added.

The mentri besar said the Space City project would be carried out at the same time as Sime Darby’s Central Vision Valley (CVV) project located some 8 km away.

The CVV project will be carried out on 3,000ha, comprising mixed development, sports and educational institutions.

Mohamad said the proceeds to be raised from the sale of the 400ha would be used by the state government to repay loans taken from the federal government and the Pensions Trust Fund, some of which would mature this year.

  • The Lights in the Tunnel

I read a fascinating book yesterday called The Lights in the Tunnel: Automation, Accelerating Technology and the Economy of the Future by Martin Ford.  I can’t remember who sent it to me (someone did – thank you); it appeared on the of my infinite pile of books so I gobbled it down as my first book at 2010.

The first half of the book sets up the situation and the corresponding problems.  I agreed with much of the first half.  The second half proposes a solution.  I had a hugely difficult time with it.  Ford anticipated this as he regularly acknowledged (unnecessarily) throughout the second half that many people would have a hard time with his proposed solution.  Yet he marched on relentlessly.

Ford’s basic premise is as follows:

At some point in the future – it might be many years or decades from now – machines will be able to do the jobs of a large percentage of the ‘average’ people in our population, and these people will not be able to find new jobs.”

Ford does a good job of spending the first half of this book making the case for this.  He draws nicely from the notion of a technological singularity (which many of us are now calling simple “the singularity” for convenience), explains why mainstream economists (and the notion of econometrics in general) are basically historians rather than effective predictors of the future, does a nice job weaving the Luddite Fallacy into the mix,  makes a compelling argument about China’s role in this he calls the “China Fallacy”, and wraps it up by revisiting a variety of conventional views of the future while asking “do we really believe they are going to play out this way?” (answer = no).

At this point I took a break and went for a walk around the block with my dogs.  I knew the book was shifting from “problem” to “solution” (the next chapter was titled Transition) and I wanted to clear my mind so I could absorb it. I had a couple of weak ideas about where Ford was going to go, but it was pretty fuzzy to me.  So I dove back in.

The second half of the book blew me away.  Ford starts by asserting underlying his mental model – that in the future 75% unemployment will permanently exist because jobs will have been automated away – and they will not be replaceable.  So – the vast majority of people in our society will be “unemployable” in a conventional sense (as in a 40 hour / week job).  Ford asks rhetorically “Is it possible to have a prosperous economy and a civil society in such a scenario?” (answer = yes and he’s going to propose a way to do it.)

The base on which he builds his solution is the following idea:

“We will have to undergo a quantum shift in our value system.  In order to preserve the free market system, we will have to come to the realization that while work (at least for most people) may no longer be essential, broad-based consumption is essential.”

He then spends the balance of the book explaining a government-driven taxation and incentive approach that taxes companies based on their permanently lost wages (based on automation, which he asserts will increase gross margins) while incenting the unemployed to act in ways that benefit themselves and societies by paying them based on how they act and contribute in this “non-traditional job” way.  Ford suggests several simple categories, including Education (self and others), Community and Civic Activities, Journalism, and the Environment.  He then spends a lot of time explaining the implementation at a high level, including an abstract example of how a functioning free-market society could exist post the singularity.

Sometime during reading this stuff my brain exploded and I had to go take the dogs for another walk.  When I came back, I tried to explain this to Amy but couldn’t.  I tried to make the argument that all government employees (local, state, and federal) are already in this category so the jump from the federally reported 10% unemployment to 75% isn’t as big as we might think since 8% already work for the government (so let’s say the jump is from 20% to 75%).  I couldn’t do it – I just couldn’t take myself seriously.

While I love Ford’s tenacity with the idea and radical approach, I think this book would have worked better as science fiction rather than an attempt at an economic / political essay.  Ironically, I might have been able to buy the argument better in the context of science fiction; when put against the backdrop of our existing social / societal construct, it was too difficult for me to absorb.

I have a belief that the structure of what we call “modern society” will have to change post singularity.  I don’t yet have my own hypothesis for what this looks like, but many of my favorite science fiction writers have been hacking away at this for several decades.  And I’m continuing to slurp down as much stuff as I can about the singularity since I both (a) believe it will happen in my lifetime – assuming I live a normal life expectancy and (b) I hope I’ll be involved in helping create it.

I’ll be following Ford’s blogging at his site econfuture: Future Economics and Technology. Even though I struggled with his solution, it’s another interesting input for me to ponder. And all of this also led me (via an article titled Martin Ford Asks: Will Automation Lead to Economic Collapse?) to a fun new website called Singularity Hub which has now been added to my feedreader.  Now, time for some more Philip K. Dick.

  • Tajikistan Earthquake Today

The epicenter of the quake was in Vanj district and the magnitude was 5.5 on the Richter scale, according to Tajikistan’s seismic monitor center.
In its most generic sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event — whether a natural phenomenon or an event caused by humans — that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear experiments. An earthquake’s point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. The term epicenter refers to the point at ground level directly above the hypocenter.

An earthquake in the southern mountainous region of Tajikistan on Saturday has destroyed at least 1,050 houses, but no human deaths were reported, said local officials.

Preliminary damage is estimate at about 1.5 million U.S. dollars, the deputy head of the district, Azimjon Shamsiddinov, told the Interfax News Agency.

The judges include cookbook author and chef Nigella Lawson, Olympic gold medal swimmer Natalie Coughlin and actress Jane Seymour.
Before the battle began the chefs were able to ask Mrs. Obama a question about the garden. Flay says, “I asked her if there was one ingredient I should not pass up. She promptly said, ‘Sweet potatoes.’ And the sweet potatoes in that garden are immense. Obviously, we took that cue.” The First Lady shared that she and the President are sweet potato lovers.

Michelle Obama becomes the first Presidential wife to appear on a reality TV show. The First Lady will take the opportunity to promote the Healthy Kids Initiative which works to reduce childhood obesity through improved school lunches, farmer’s markets, community gardens, and exercise.

“We are thrilled to be working with Michael and Natalie to support and spread awareness for their organizations,” said John Paul Cavanaugh, CEO, H2O Audio. “With the holidays around the corner, it’s a great time to give back and also offer something special to loyal friends and fans. H2O Audio shares the same passion as Michael and Natalie regarding the importance of exercise and healthy living, and we hope our collective contributions help these charities move closer to their goals.”

H2O Audio’s holiday program is being launched as part of Phelps’ and Coughlin’s new fan-focused GummyJungle widgets, an innovative tool that collects each athlete’s social networking activities into one cohesive group, and gives fans continuous access to updates, photos, videos and special offers. The initiative will be promoted via widget banners, Twitter, Facebook, SwimChannel.com, and on dedicated landing pages at H2OAudio.com. Fans choose which charity they would like to support using a special code upon purchase.

“I started this foundation to bring the sport of swimming to more children and am grateful for any contributions that help the organization do its part in keeping kids healthy,” commented Phelps. “With partners like H2O Audio, we can encourage more people to get in the pool and stay active.”

“I am so inspired by MOVE’s mission to use exercise and physical activity to promote overall wellness,” said Coughlin. “I’m really pleased to have H2O Audio’s support in giving back to both my fans and this charity through the holidays.”
