  • Windows Mobile web use grows 50% in one month, WM 6.5 a quiet success?

    webtrendsdec2009

We have often seen Net Application’s Market Share analysis used to condemn Windows Mobile, but this month at least the company, that generates its numbers from analysing traffic to thousands of websites, has good news for Windows Mobile fans.

Web site use for Windows Mobile has apparently seen a sharp upward spike in December, rising from 0.04 to 0.06% of all web traffic measured, constituting a 50% increase in usage over the festive season.

Of course Net Applications can not explain the increase, but 2 obvious reasons come to mind.  One is that Windows Mobile 6.5 may have had more of an impact than analysts give it credit for, making Windows Mobile-based devices more consumer friendly and inviting to use.

The next would place the full responsibility for the spike on one device only – the HTC HD2, which certainly has a very good web browsing experience due to its capacitive screen and fast Snapdragon processor.

The month on month increase is the second greatest percentage-wise for the mobile OS’s broken out by Net Applications:

    November 2009

    December 2009

    Growth

    iPhone 0.36% 0.44%            22%
    Symbian 0.19% 0.23%            21%
    iPod Touch 0.07% 0.09%            29%
    Windows Mobile 0.04% 0.06%            50%
    Android 0.03% 0.05%            66%
    Blackberry 0.03% 0.03%              0%
    Palm 0.01% 0.01%              0%

Such growth is certainly unusual for a mature product, as can be seen by the percentages of other established devices such as the iPhone, Symbian and RIM, but often does signify either the release of an new version of an OS or hit device, both of which occurred recently for Windows Mobile.

Palm would however be disappointed, with the company not only not showing any month on month growth in the festive season, but no significant growth across the whole year either, starting and ending the year on 0.01% despite the much hyped Pre and Pixi.

Is Windows Mobile 6.5 a secret hit? Drop your opinion in the comments below.

  • East Bayfront Great Gulf Homes

    Parkside Condo 36 floors 120m

Described by architect Moshe Dafdie as "Gardens in the Sky".

Waterfront Toronto selects Great Gulf to be first East Bayfront developer

    TORONTO

Waterfront Toronto has selected Toronto real estate developer Great Gulf Group of Companies to lead the first private sector development in the East Bayfront neighbourhood. A date has not been set for groundbreaking.

Designed by Boston-based architect Moshe Safdie, the mixed-use Parkside development will be “a dramatic new addition” to Toronto’s skyline with green, plant-covered roofs and lush, stepped gardens.

In addition to residential units, the development will feature ground floor retail, a daycare centre and potential office and cultural space. Ultimately, the project is expected to deliver a $200 million private sector investment in the community.

“Parkside will be a trailblazer in redeveloping Toronto’s waterfront,” said Mayor David Miller. “This project is a clear indication that imagination and creativity are key to our vision for a green, 21st century urban waterfront.”

The project, which is in the conceptual design stage, is being undertaken by a team that includes Toronto’s Quadrangle Architects Ltd. and Janet Rosenberg + Associates Landscape Architects.

The Parkside site is bounded by Lower Sherbourne Street in the west, Bonnycastle Street in the east, Queens Quay East in the south and Lake Shore Boulevard in the north.

This project represents the latest milestone in Waterfront Toronto’s transformation of the lakefront lands from “a fading reminder” of the city’s industrial past into a series of “beautiful and sustainable” 21st century communities.

Today East Bayfront is a busy work site with Waterfront Toronto completing the basic infrastructure, such as water, hydro, sanitation and gas facilities, to support the major development already in progress.

Construction is well underway on Corus Quay, the future headquarters of Corus Entertainment. George Brown College will soon break ground for its new lakefront campus.

“Great Gulf’s outstanding proposal captures the very spirit of the East Bayfront precinct plan with an overall design concept that supports our vision for fostering a vibrant and diverse community in the area,” said Waterfront Toronto president and CEO John Campbell.

From a sustainability perspective, the proposal demonstrates compliance with Waterfront Toronto’s mandatory green building requirements. LEED Gold certification is being targeted.

Great Gulf will explore a variety of environmentally-progressive design initiatives, including a plant-covered wall in the building’s atrium that will contribute to improved indoor air quality and the use of recycled and locally-sourced building materials.

“The vision for the project is ‘gardens in the sky’,” said Safdie, whose firm has a branch office in Toronto. “Rejuvenation of the waterfront is a noble task for Toronto and I trust that this building will set the standard for an exciting new kind of urban living.”

The building will be a 120-metre-high tower anchored by a 38-metre-high podium. It will extend from Queens Quay in the south to Lake Shore Boulevard in the north.

“We are proud to have been selected as the developer of the Parkside site and look forward to playing an integral role in the renewal of our city’s waterfront,” said David Gerofsky, president and COO of Great Gulf Group.

Great Gulf was selected by Waterfront Toronto following a two-stage bidding process.

Here was another bid for that site.

  • BG levels

    Hello friends

I was reading through this website Healthy Blood Sugar Targets and came across some figures for BG.

It states the optimum BG levels should be:

    Fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L)
    One hour after meals under 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L)
Two hours after meals under 120 mg/dl

    With a maximum of 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) 2 hours after meals.

Basically states that post-meal blood sugars of 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) and higher and fasting blood sugars over 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) cause permanent organ damage and cause diabetes to progress.

So these are the numbers I am trying for. But I have come to a point that I am confused. The Fasting blood sugar, would this only be in the morning?

Since we are breaking up meals into smaller meals, I eat 6 times per day, so I have breakfest, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner and before bed I have something as well such as tea and crackers. The question is for example with my numbers for today which are the following, am I achieving the optimum levels? Or are these levels blurred because of the overlaping or closeness to each meal?

ºwoke @ 9:30: 106 ovbiously over 100 so not optimal.
ºLate breakfest, took before reading @ 12:26 with 112 also over 100.
º2 hours after @ 14:22 had 108 so good, its below the 120.
º Before Lunch @ 15:04 with 108 and here is where my confusion is as its above 100. But is this considered fasting?
    ºAfter lunch 2 hours @ 17:04 with 93
ºBefore diner @ 21:40 with 110, so again above 100 but I had some cheese and a toast at 19:00 or so.
º1 hour after dinner @ 126 so below the 140
º2 hours after dinner @ 89 so below the 120

I hope I can get my point across. This was an odd day today as I woke to take my insulin shot yet stayed in bed with my 2 year old daughter and fell asleep so thats why the late breakfeast, but I usually eat between 9:30-10:00, then snack at 12 or so then we usually eat around 14:30 – 15:00, snack around 18:00 and dinner at around 21:30 – 23:00. So the time for the BG to come down might not be optimal for achieving these figures, if the fasting level is supposed to be before every meal.

    Thanks 😉

  • Buying an Eco-friendly House

While browsing through current home listings in my area, I came across one that was advertised as a “GREEN” house. Yes, all caps. The description went on to say that the house had been “GREEN” for eight years. Since there was an open house today I decided to swing by to check it out. (No, that’s not it in the picture!)

    green-home

The very friendly Realtor explained that the house was green because the previous owner hadn’t used harsh chemicals to clean it. She said they also used low-VOC paint and no chemicals on the lawn.

That’s nice, but I don’t think I’d describe the house as green just because of the cleaners, paint and lawn. There are so many other things you need to consider.

    Energy efficiency

    • Proper insulation in attic and walls
    • Upgraded windows to avoid drafts (single-glazed windows should be replaced)
    • Energy Star appliances and light fixtures
    • Natural daylight
    • Tankless water heater
    • Light-colored exterior for reflecting heat
    • Trees for shade (particularly deciduous trees on the west side)
    • Efficient furnace (Furnaces built before 1992 with a standing pilot may waste up to 35% of their fuel.)
    • Radiant floor heat
    • Solar power

    Water friendly

    • Low-flow toilets or a composting toilet
    • Water-saving shower heads
    • Landscaping that can withstand droughts
    • Inspections for leaks

If a Realtor is advertising a house as green, then ask for an energy audit. For help in finding a green home, try EcoBroker. If your dream home isn’t already energy efficient, get estimates before you buy to see how much it will cost to make your home more green.

  • “Avatar” Hits $1 Billion Mark

James Cameron’s Avatar has reached the $1 billion mark at the international box office — making it the Titanic director’s second film to reach the milestone.

The 3D epic — which has earned $352 million in North America — hit the mark after only 17 days in release.

There have only been a handful of films that have ever passed the $1 billion marker — Cameron’s 1997 classic Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and The Dark Knight. While the blue aliens of Avatar would have to double their take to toppled Titanic, if the film tops The Lord of the Rings, it will become the second highest-grossing film of all time, making James Cameron responsible for the two top-grossing movies in history.

    Now that’s an accomplishment…..

  • Samsung NX10 made official — APS-C sensor and AMOLED screen crammed into hybrid DSLR body

Samsung has just announced its NX10 “hybrid DSLR,” which aims to give you all the uncompromising image quality of a full digital SLR within a somewhat more pocketable body. A 14.6 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor is a good start on that road, while “fast and decisive” contrast AF and a snazzy 3-inch AMOLED display keep the momentum going. There’s 720p H.264-encoded video recording as well, but naturally you do have to make some tradeoffs for the reduced size. The mirror box is gone — leaving you with only an electronic viewfinder — and the brand new NX lens mounting system means you’ll have to purchase your favorite lenses all over again. We’ll wait and see whether the NX10 shows any appreciable advantages (such as price!) over the slightly smaller Micro Four Thirds shooters out there, but with a spring 2010 release date and a CES appearance on the cards, that wait shouldn’t be too long. Go past the break for the full PR and spec sheet.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 review

Lenovo has always had a certain knack for producing some of the most reliable, ergonomic and slender ultraportables on the market (see ThinkPad X301 and ThinkPad X200). But they’ve always had one issue: prices that ring up at well over a grand. Where’s the killer ThinkPad ultraportable for the rest of us been? Well hello, ThinkPad Edge 13 – a thin, light Intel ULV powered laptop with an entirely new design that starts at $549. Yes, $549. But at that price point and with some serious changes to some traditional elements can it live up to the ThinkPad quality that we’ve been accustomed to for years? And can it stand out in the overpopulated CULV-based laptop market? We spent a couple days putting a spec’d-up $899 model through our daily grind — read on for our full review.

  • Lenovo intros ThinkPad Edge, X100e ultraportable and other ThinkPad refreshes

It just wouldn’t be a CES without a gaggle of new introductions from Lenovo, and while we knew good and well that most everything here was on the way thanks to a slip-up at Lenovo’s site, it’s always nice to get the official word. Kicking things off is the altogether sexy ThinkPad Edge, which will ship in 13-, 14- and 15-inch versions in order to suit the small business users in the crowd. It’ll include a choice of AMD processors (Turion X2 or Athlon X2), optional 3G / 4G WWAN modules, a full suite of Lenovo’s own ThinkVantage technologies and preloaded Skype. This machine also marks the first ever ThinkPad to arrive with a choice of color — it’ll ship in matte black, glossy black and heat-wave red. Moving on, there’s the previously rumored X100e, which goes down as the company’s first “entry-level ultraportable.” Starting at under $500, the AMD-based (Athlon Neo or Turion) rig gets outfitted with Windows 7 Professional, an 11.6-inch display, full-size keyboard, multitouch trackpad, WiFi and optional Bluetooth / 3G. Rounding things off are four new introductions in the classic range: the T410s, T410, T510 and W510. The foursome will become the first in the ThinkPad family to offer the upcoming Intel dual-core CPUs and mobile Core i7, and if you’re thirsty for the full specs lists on the bunch (along with videos of the X100e and Edge), head on past the break and open wide.

  • Hi Keith!

    Brothel parrot has new home

A woman went to a pet shop & immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot. There was a sign on the cage that said $50.00.

‘Why so little,’ she asked the pet store owner.

The owner looked at her and said, ‘Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of prostitution and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.’
The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird any way.

She took it home and hung the bird’s cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something.
The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said,

    ‘New house, new madam.’

The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought ‘that’s really not so bad.’

When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird saw them and said, ‘New house, new madam, new girls.’

The girls and the woman were a bit offended but then began to laugh about the situation considering how and where the parrot had been raised.

Moments later, the woman’s husband Keith came home from work.

The bird looked at him and said, “Hi Keith”

  • Acrylamide Hype, Back in the Fryer

Yesterday, The Sacramento Bee published a nutrition quiz on a subject we haven’t seen much in a while: acrylamide.  Acrylamide is a chemical generally produced during the process of frying, roasting, or baking vegetables. A few researchers have suggested that acrylamide could increase the human risk of cancer, which resulted in predictable activist-driven scaremongering about potato chips and coffee a few years back. All led, of course, by the ever-shrill Center for Science in the Public Interest.

But as the Bee’s quiz rightly notes, the average person could ingest six or seven times more acrylamide than he or she already typically does without much (if any) harm. Or, as we calculated previously, a person would have to eat 182 pounds of french fries every day for a lifetime in order to be in any real danger. In other words, it’s the dose that makes the poison.

For people who consume balanced diets, acrylamide isn’t likely to be a problem at all. But we have to wonder: Should groups that advocate plant-only diets that are heavy on veggies and starches (the phony-baloney PCRM comes to mind) start issuing disclaimers?

  • Samsung NX10 Gets Real, New NX Series Camera Format and All [Samsung NX10]

The compact Samsung NX10 is official this evening, with many if not all of the features we saw leaked in December making the final cut in time for some hands-on time at CES.

If you missed the fanfare in December, here’s a recap:

Samsung’s goal with the NX series was to introduce a DSLR-sized sensor, in this case APS-C, that’s actually a bit larger than the one found in Micro Four Thirds. Then they went and put that sensor in a mirror-less, interchangeable lens body that’s smaller than a traditional DSLR, and… If this is giving anyone déjà vu, it’s probably because this is the same idea behind the aforementioned Micro Four Thirds camera format.

Also making it into the final body are 720p HD video functionality (H.264 codec) and a 3.0-inch AMOLED viewscreen in the rear:

Samsung, by way of a press release sent to Gizmodo, claimed the AMOLED screen has a response rate that’s 10,000 times faster than a conventional LCD. All this with a promised lower power consumption and higher contrast ratio at 10,000:1.

A few more of the specs, provided by Samsung:

    View Finder – Electronic viewfinder
    Movie – 720p HD (MP4. H.264)
Size & Weight – 4.8″ x 3.4″ x 1.6″ (excluding the projecting parts of the camera) .78 lbs (without battery and card)
    ISO – 100 – 3200
    Flash – Built-in Pop-up Flash
    OIS – Lens Shift
    Dust reduction – Supersonic Type
Special Features – APS-C sized image sensor, 3.0″ AMOLED, Smart Range, HDMI (Anynet +), Fast &, Decisive Contrast AF, New DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced AF algorithm
    Availability – Spring 2010

The body comes in black and also Titan Silver, a color we didn’t know about before. Maybe the new color will make Matt change his mind about the looks. Probably not.

  • Are The Chillling Numbers For Dems Due To Pollster Bias At Rasmussen?

There’s a big, slow-news-weekend story over at Politico today over allegations made by certain Democrats and liberals that the prolific polling firm Rasmussen Reports is biased toward conservative and Republican causes. I have to catch a flight (weather permitting) in a couple of hours, so I don’t have quite as much time to weigh in on this as I’d like, but let me present the Cliff’s Notes version.

The first thing to note is that there are a lot of different ways in which a polling firm might be biased. Rasmussen is most frequently accused of bias because their results are thought to lean toward Republican candidates. Just to pick a random example, for instance, Rasmussen has embattled Democrat Blanche Lincoln down by margins ranging between 4 and 7 points against three potential Republican opponents in her 2010 Senate race, whereas two other polling firms (neither of which, incidentally, are themselves free of partisan ties) have Lincoln ahead against these opponents by margins ranging from 1 to 16 points. Does this mean that Rasmussen is biased?

For me, it doesn’t — not necessarily.

Three-game teams: BOS, CHA, CLE, DAL, DEN DET, GSW, HOU, IND, LAC, MIL, MIN, OKC, PHI, PHO, SAC, SAS, TOR

    Two-game teams: NYK

Also see: Basketball Monster’s ease rankings and Rotowire’s value meter

Pickups/Plug-ins – Players owned in less than 40% of Yahoo! leagues

Mike Miller(notes) – Miller has returned to practice
for the Wizards and could return to the active roster for one or both
of the team’s upcoming back-to-back games (Tuesday/Wednesday). He may take some time to get back to game speed but should eventually reclaim his spot as the starting shooting guard – in nine starts this season, he averaged 9.8 points on 59-percent shooting, 1.4 threes, 6.1 boards, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 29 minutes. Miller could also emerge with an even more substantial role for the Wizards (or elsewhere?) if there is a roster shake-up. Week 11: @PHI, @CLE, ORL, NOR

Matt Barnes(notes) – Barnes has rejoined the Magic’s starting five in a big
way, going for 23 points with five threes and a double-double (17
points, 11 boards) over the past two games. Stan Van Gundy made the
switch because he likes Barnes’ versatility with the first unit and
wants to free up Mickael Pietrus(notes) for a bit more usage with the team’s
reserves, and it should stick moving forward. In his 10 starts on the
season, Barnes has averaged 13.1 points, 1.2 threes, 7.9 boards, and
    1.9 steals-plus-blocks in 33 minutes. Week 11: @IND, TOR, @WAS, ATL

Luther Head(notes) – Head has stepped into the void at shooting guard for
the Pacers and delivered solid back-to-back performances, averaging
    25.5 points, 2.5 threes, 5.5 boards, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5
blocks over the past two games. Given the massive struggles up and down
the Pacers’ roster, the opportunity for numbers here, and Head’s
    history (13.5 points, 1.9 threes, 3.7 boards, 3.4 assists, 1.8
turnovers, 1.4 steals in 60 career starts), a speculative add makes
sense in all but the shallowest of leagues. Week 11: ORL, @MIN, @OKC

Omri Casspi(notes) – Casspi’s role and subsequent production have been increasing as the season has gone on. Over the past 10 games, he’s averaged 16.8 points, 1.9 threes, 4.9 free throws, 6 boards, and 1.3 steals plus blocks in 35 minutes. Week 11: PHO, @GSW, DEN

Kirk Hinrich(notes) – Hinrich has been reasonably productive since being promoted to the starting lineup (9.5 points, 1.8 threes, 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover, 0.8 steals in four games) and a key for the move having staying power is that the Bulls have gone 4-0 since making the switch. Week 11: OKC, @CHA, @MIL, MIN

    C.J. Watson(notes) – Watson’s production is something of a well-kept secret,
as he’s rostered in 20 percent of leagues despite a per-game rank of
71st on the season and 55th over the past month. Averages over the past
month include 10.2 points, 1.1 threes, 3 assists, 1.1 turnovers, and
    2.1 steals in 33 minutes. Week 11: @DEN, @MIN, SAC

Luke Ridnour(notes) – Ridnour’s playing time has been in flux for most of December, but he’s back in the mix now that Carlos Delfino(notes) has fallen out of Scott Skiles’ good graces. Delfino has logged a total of nine minutes over the past two games, while Ridnour has averaged 23 minutes, 14.5 points on 59-percent shooting and 1.5 threes over the past four. Week 11: @NJN, CHI, @LAL

Kyle Lowry(notes) – Lowry has quietly emerged as a integral part of the
Rockets’ rotation, packing production into ever-increasing minutes. His
averages over the past 13 games include 9.7 points, 0.7 threes, 4
    boards, 4.9 assists, 1.3 turnovers, and 1.4 steals in 27 minutes. Week 11: @LAL, @PHO, NYK

Rasual Butler(notes) – Butler has been seeing consistent minutes for the Clippers, averaging 30 over the past 10 games and seeing no less than 24 in any of those contests. Shots have been falling for the most part, as well, as he’s averaged 13.1 points on 49-percent shooting, 2.4 threes, 3.2 boards, and 1.5 steals-plus-blocks during that stretch. Week 11: POR, LAL, MIA

DeJuan Blair(notes) – Blair is still dealing with ups-and-downs but the team has won five straight with him in the starting lineup, and (deep-leaguers take note) that should bode well for his long-term prospects this season. Over the past five games, he’s averaged 8.6 points, 7.6 boards, and 1.8 steals-plus-blocks in 25 minutes. Week 11: DET, DAL, NJN

Earl Watson(notes) – The production hasn’t been stellar since Watson became the starter in Indiana, but at least we know he has some job security. In seven starts thus far, he’s averaged 7.6 points, 0.9 threes, 5.1 assists, 1.7 turnovers, and 1.5 steals-plus-blocks in 28 minutes. Week 11: ORL, @MIN, @OKC

Devin Brown(notes) – Clearly Brown’s name isn’t inspring oohs and aahs, but the production at least warrants a bit more ownership than he’s currently seeing (5%). He’s the starter in New Orleans and plays alongside Chris Paul(notes), and over the past eight games has averaged 12.8 points, 2.3 threes, and 1.4 steals in 30 minutes. Week 11: @UTH, @OKC, NJN, @WAS

    Status Updates

LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) – Aldridge’s left ankle sprain kept him out of Saturday’s game and is expected to sideline him on Monday, as well.

Carmelo Anthony(notes) – Anthony missed Saturday’s game with a bruised right knee and he’ll be a game-time decision Sunday.

Ron Artest(notes) – Artest’s Sunday availability remains up in the air after he was a non-contact participant in practice Saturday, under the watchful eye of a neurologist

Chauncey Billups(notes) – Billups’ left groin strain is expected to sideline him for the fourth consecutive game Sunday.

Steve Blake(notes) – Blake remains hospitalized with pneumonia and could be out for at least another week.

Jose Calderon(notes) – Calderon won’t play Sunday, but Jay Triano is hoping to have him in uniform for the Raptors’ following game, Wednesday at Orlando.

Marcus Camby(notes) – Camby’s knee is still an issue but is getting better and the hope is that the team’s current stretch of only two games in nine days will allow him to get back to 100 percent.

Vince Carter(notes) – VC’s left ankle sprain is not considered serious and he expects to be in the lineup for the Magic’s next game (Tuesday, @IND).

Tyson Chandler(notes) – Chandler remains out due to a stress reaction in his left foot, something that had been giving him pain for a while before he shut it down.

Kevin Garnett(notes) – KG could be out for another 10 days because of a hyper-extended right knee, with the team taking every precaution to make sure he’s 100% well before he returns.

    Danny Granger(notes)
    – Granger (plantar fasciitis) has started light activities like shooting but has yet to resume running. He’s clearly not ahead of schedule, but we have yet to hear anything to make it seem as though he won’t meet projections of a return sometime in mid-January.

    Blake Griffin(notes)
    – Griffin remains sidelined by a stress fracture on his left kneecap but could
resume basketball-related activities within the next two weeks.

Kevin Martin(notes) – Martin’s latest CT scan (December 30) showed improvement in his wrist but he remains on an indefinite timetable. He’ll be examined again on January 12 and might not be long for the active roster afterward if it’s another successful check-up.

Troy Murphy(notes) – Murphy (ankle) will miss his third consecutive game Sunday and will be questionable for Tuesday.

Paul Pierce(notes) – Pierce is still dealing with swelling and can’t fully bend his knee in the wake of two procedures to clean up an infection. He’s officially day-to-day but won’t be rushed back, so consider him questionable for most of Week 11.

Rajon Rondo(notes) – Rondo missed Saturday’s game because of a sore right hamstring, but he’s expected to be able to return for the team’s next game (Wednesday, @MIA).

Rodney Stuckey(notes) – Stuckey’s sprained left ankle kept him out of Saturday’s practice but he does not anticipate missing any game action. His status should be a bit more clear leading up to Tuesday (@DAL).
