“The good news is that more Americans are no longer concerned about global warming and carbon dioxide as they become aware that the claims justifying these fears are based on deliberately falsified computer models and the fact that the nation and the planet are now a decade into a natural cooling cycle,” says Caruba.

“2010, the end of the first decade of the 21st century, is likely to be seen in retrospect as a tipping point that will determine either a return to traditional standards of fiscal prudence,” says Caruba, “or will plunge the nation and the world into a Depression of cataclysmic proportions.”

  • Pet Tarantulas Can Harm Your Eyes

When it comes to pet tarantulas, I say to each their own. But wear eye protection, experts warn.

A Chilean Rose tarantula in the UK was naughty, but the owner didn’t quite know it. According to BBC, the pet tarantula rubbed its hind legs against its abdomen to dislodge urticating hairs, which can cause stinging pain. What’s amazing here is that the tarantula’s owner didn’t connect his eye issues with the spray of spider hair directed at his eye when he was cleaning the terrarium.

    tarantula-hair

Three weeks after the hairy attack, when doctors told him they could see tiny hairs sticking out of his severely inflamed eye, the man remembered the tarantula-spraying incident.

The hairs were identified with a high magnification lens, and BBC reported that the tarantula’s owner will be treated with steroids on a long-term basis. Doctors were unable to remove the tiny hairs.

If this doesn’t motivate tarantula owners to wear eye protection, I’m not sure what will.

  • Court Report: Nate the great

Nate Robinson’s(notes) return to the court was the major highlight on a Friday night with just six teams in action.

    • After Friday’s morning shootaround, Mike D’Antoni was mulling whether or not to reintroduce Nate Robinson into the Knicks’ rotation to see if he could give the Knicks "an offensive spark." He did and he did. Robinson returned to the active roster Friday after 14 consecutive DNP-CDs and rallied the Knicks to a 112-108 overtime win on the road in Atlanta. He scored 41 points on 18-of-24 shooting in 38 minutes, adding three treys, six boards, and eight assists. Robinson scored 11 of his points in the overtime, personally outscoring the Hawks by two in the period, and scored 19 of the Knicks’ final 21 points in the game. Mike D’Antoni provided the following quotes after the game:

"We were kind of like ‘Everybody get out of his way’" … "We’ve just been trying to get him focused on winning, and he obviously was
    focused on that tonight."

If you haven’t already checked your free agent list to see if Robinson is available, then now would be a good time to do so. What remains to be seen is what happens from here, although clearly D’Antoni’s reference to Nate’s focus is a key for continued playing time. Larry Hughes(notes) was a DNP-CD Friday – after averaging just 14 minutes over the past five games – and Toney Douglas(notes) didn’t leave the bench either, as D’Antoni stuck to essentially a seven-man rotation. Chris Duhon(notes) played 27 minutes (6 points, 2 threes, 6 assists), the first time he’s been under 34 minutes since Dec. 2. Maybe the Knicks are trying to up Robinson’s trade value, and maybe D’Antoni simply wanted to see if one of his most dynamic players was ready to get back in the mix. Either way, fantasy owners need to get (back) on board, if possible.

Matt Barnes(notes) has replaced Mickael Pietrus(notes) in the Magic starting lineup, with Stan Van Gundy saying that he likes Barnes’ versatile game with the first unit and that he hopes Pietrus can see a bit more usage while playing with the team’s reserves. Barnes was very solid in the 106-94 win over the T-Wolves Friday (35 minutes, 17 points, 11 boards, 1 steal) and has averaged 12 points, 0.8 threes, 8.3 boards, 1.4 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 33 minutes during his nine starts on the season.

Jameer Nelson’s(notes) left knee held up well Friday (30 minutes, 16 points, 2 threes, 6 assists, 2 steals), but a truer test of where he’s at will come Saturday in the second game of a back-to-back.

    • I’m not going to speculate on the Gilbert Arenas(notes) situation at this point, but here’s some info from an Adrian Wojnarowski piece:

The NBA is expected to wait to see if the law enforcement agencies
file charges before the league acts. NBA security has been working with
the Wizards to investigate the matter. Team officials had immediately
reported the incident to the league office, and have been cooperating
with law enforcement authorities. Several league sources believe NBA commissioner David Stern
ultimately will mete out stiff penalties in the matter. Both Arenas and
Crittenton could be subject to suspensions and fines.

For what it’s worth, Arenas said that what is being widely reported is not the real story. We can only stay tuned here.

Tyreke Evans(notes) missed his fourth straight game Friday because of a right ankle injury, but he’s likely to be back in action when the Kings return to the court Tuesday (PHO).

Ron Artest(notes) missed his fourth consecutive game Friday and is also unlikely to play Sunday. Although his post-concussion symptoms are improving, he’s not yet ready for full contact.

    • Look for Andre Miller(notes) and Jerryd Bayless(notes) to get extended run on Saturday (GSW) and a bit further into the immediate future. Steve Blake(notes) was hospitalized Friday morning with pneumonia and is out indefinitely.

Saturday status updates: Kevin Garnett(notes) (knee), Paul Pierce(notes) (knee), and Rajon Rondo(notes) (hamstring) are out for the Celtics. … Chauncey Billups(notes) (groin) is questionable, Carmelo Anthony(notes) (knee) is probable. … LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) (ankle) is doubtful. … Peja Stojakovic(notes) (back) expects to play. … Troy Murphy(notes) (ankle) is out. … Hedo Turkoglu(notes) (knee) is doubtful.

  • Happy New Year 2010!

MD and I wish all of you a most prosperous and healthful New Year!

We’ve had a great time with family and friends over the holidays, but now it’s time to get back into the swing of things.  We ended the year last night with a great dinner for friends.  MD went all out on one of her mega dinners, which, of course, included foie gras, her all-time favorite food.  (That’s my serving of foie gras pictured on the left.  The little jelly-like stuff is a pomegranate pepper jelly that was out of this world and well worth the four or five carbs.)  We had a terrific time ringing out the old year and ringing in the new. I, myself, could have done with a few fewer glasses of wine and the champagne we drank to toast in the new year.

MD’s menu for our New Year’s Eve feast:

    • Roasted red pepper soup
    • Foie gras (cooked sous vide)
    • Duck breast (cooked sous vide) with cabernet cherry reduction
    • Golden beets
    • Fresh herb salad with vinaigrette
    • Epoisses (a soft French cheese)
    • Poached pears (cooked sous vide) with pomegranate reduction and heavy cream

Various wines for the different courses and champagne at midnight.

    I’ve just now barely recovered.

Everyone is busily making resolutions for the new year, and I suspect that in many cases the list includes weight loss.  In cruising through the web today while regaining my sobriety, I came across a number of posts offering to help by giving weight loss recommendations.  As a weight-loss method, it seems this year that caloric restriction is all the vogue.  Most of the articles I read had a sort of smarmy condescending nature to them, as in, hey, guys, it’s really, really simple to lost weight.  All you have to do is just cut your calories and you’ll lose.  It’s not difficult.  Just do it.

One particular article on losing weight that was representative of most was in Wired Wiki How-To.  By his tone, it’s pretty obvious that the author of this article figures he’s found the holy grail of weight loss.  It’s easy and fast and foolproof.

    What does he recommend?

First, you decide how much you want to lose and how long you want to diet. You then multiply the amount (in pounds) you want to lose times 3,500 (the number of calories in a pound of fat).  Take this number and divide it by the number of days you plan on dieting, and you’ve got the number of calories you’ve got to cut back by to lose the weight you want to lose.

The article even gives an example to show how it works.  Let’s say you need to lose 10 pounds and you’re willing to spend two months dieting to lose the weight.  You multiply 10 times 3,500, which gives you 35,000 calories you need to get rid of.  Divide this 35,000 by 60, and you find you need to reduce your intake by 583 calories per day, and, Voila!, your ten extra pounds will be gone at the end of the month.  What could be easier?  Why didn’t I think of that?

The author even presents a version of the energy balance equation to show what he’s talking about.  It’s just a system, says he, and all you’ve got to do to be thin is operate the system.

If it were only that easy, no one would be overweight.

Here is the energy balance equation:

Change in weight = Calories in – Calories out

Below is another way of stating the same thing:

Change in weight = Calories from food consumed – Calories from BMR and exercise

It all sounds so easy.  If your calories coming in from food are balanced by the calories you get rid of during daily living, then your weight remains constant.  If you decrease your intake of calories and keep the calories going out the same, then you’ll decrease your weight.

Problem is, these two terms ‘calories in’ and ‘calories out’ aren’t independent of one another.  If you reduce the number of calories coming in, you’ll also reduce the number of calories you burn.  Your metabolic rate will drop, you will decrease your activity more, and your weight won’t change as much as you would expect.  If you ratchet up your exercise, then you’ll compensate by unconsciously increasing the food you eat by a bit.  The fact that these two components of the energy balance equation aren’t independent is what makes losing weight by counting calories so difficult.

In my opinion, it’s much easier to lose excess body fat by following a diet that both restricts calories without your having to think about it and that does it in a way that doesn’t really cause you to drop your metabolic rate.  Plus, a good diet followed correctly actually gives you a little boost in that it provides a small metabolic advantage.  In other words, you lose a few extra calories (maybe up to 200-300 per day) without having to do anything to lose them other than following the diet.

Take a look at this post on Is a calorie always a calorie? I wrote a couple of years ago to see what I mean.

But beware.  This post comes with a caveat.  If you are in the least bit psychologically unhinged, you might not want to read the post.  It was this very post that pushed Anthony Colpo over the edge.  It inspired him to launch a jihad against me and against anyone else who might possibly believe that a slight metabolic advantage exists.  He wrote an entire book that he made available free to anyone who wanted it showing how Gary Taubes, Richard Feinman, and MD and I were idiots.  Of course, my redneck genes, such as they are, compelled me to answer.  For those of you who weren’t readers in those days, the end result of the whole affair was that after receiving a number of pretty severe canings on this blog, our friend Anthony just sort of drifted away, never to be heard from again.

All this aside, read the post and come to your own conclusions as to what the best diet is for simple, quick weight loss and act accordingly should one of your New Year’s resolutions be to lose weight.

If you need some motivation to jump in with both feet and do it, then read this post, this one and this one.

Best of luck with all your resolutions.  I look forward to continuing our journey together in 2010.

  • Florida Gators Sugar Bowl 2010 Live

About Florida (12-1): The Gators are playing for pride after this year’s only expectation was national championship or bust. Despite the country’s best defense and the SEC’s best rushing attack at 225 yards per game, the Gators got embarrassed 32-13 against Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. Quarterback Tim Tebow does not want to end his storied career with two straight losses. Florida’s defense entered the Alabama game allowing 9.8 points per game, the country’s best margin. This is the last game for the winningest senior class in SEC history with 47 wins and two national titles. It will also be the last game for many NFL-bound juniors such as CB Joe Haden and DE Carlos Dunlap. Third downs will be crucial for Florida, which converts 49 percent of its attempts. All season, Tebow has had trouble spreading the ball to receivers other than WR Riley Cooper and TE Aaron Hernandez, who combined for 103 catches this year.

About Cincinnati (12-0): The Bearcats overcame quarterback injuries and the Notre Dame distraction to creep within one Texas field goal of a chance at the national title game. Cincinnati has a potent passing attack that averages 326.5 yards per game – almost 100 more than Florida’s – thanks to QB Tony Pike and WR Mardy Gilyard’s 1,150 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. It’s the defense that has more to prove. Cincinnati is 49th nationally in total defense (350.3 yards per game) and 57th in rushing defense (141 ypg), where the Bearcats will be tested since Florida likes to win on the ground. Cincinnati’s front defensive seven must find a way to stop Tebow in short yardage. The Bearcats should be able to move the ball enough to at least thwart Florida’s defense. Despite missing three games to injury this year, Pike has thrown for 701 combined yards in the last two games. Starting RBs Isaiah Pead and Jacob Ramsey average more than 6 yards per carry.

I’ve begun to realize that if we “go with the flow,” as long as kids (and adults) aren’t causing themselves and others harm, life will be more of an adventure.

I had to laugh when I saw the post, If Your Grandchild Has Weird Hair Color. I am a 54- year old Granny, who STILL expresses herself through hair and other things. A few years ago,I had burgandy hair for at least 10 months, and loved it. I have always let my grandsons express themselves, because they will turn out ok, if you don’t make a big deal about it. I am a registered nurse, not some nut case, so I figure if I am ok, they will be too!!

One time my youngest came out of the bathroom, with hair looking like a tornado went through it, and my YELLOW garden shoes on, enroute to lunch with me at a local diner. I told him,”if you have nerve enough to wear it, I have nerve enough to take you.” He did, I did, he never did again…he was just testing.

It is ok to let them be kids, they will grow up soon enough.

    What do you think?

  • Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up

The word ‘propaganda’ has a whole different connotation in that part of the world, since the average person does not now the difference between what the top dogs want them to know – even about themselves – and what the truth is. Talking to these earnest young women, who continued to live with their parents and were not ‘allowed’ to date or even receive calls from males, I found myself comparing their repressed lives to the lives of our urban women back home. Their Chinese counterparts were so totally fire -walled from the outside world, they had absolutely no idea of life beyond their province. Their concerns had to do with making enough money to look after ageing parents, and perhaps, marry some day. With no access via the internet to news or entertainment, their existence was dominated by some ’shadowy’ bosses they lived in abject fear of. Clearly, their brief as guides was to stick to a parroted spiel that gave the impression they were fluent in English. This mechanical hard sell came apart swiftly if the questions went even a little beyond their brief. They were totally stumped… and went blank! Obviously , their knowledge of English was restricted to memorising the standard tourist brochure. I felt rather sorry for these lovely ladies, who spent most of their measly income on fairness creams, believe it or not, and wore full sleeved blouses and sun hats to protect them from the sun ( read: tanning). They were like programmed mice, scurrying around doing their jobs… their dreams never extending beyond the next small promotion. Their parents’ lives were even worse – they had endured the Cultural Revolution…. just about survived the purge. With no money, no space to live, no education, and no hope, they were dependent on the one single child the state had permitted them to bear – ladies like these guides. It was worse , far worse, than anything back in India. For the construct of their lives was based on a lie. A huge lie engineered by the State, to keep people like them perpetually servile – like obedient worker ants whose sole purpose in life was to ensure the future of the Great Country.

What is “Cloudsurf”? No, it’s definitely not a new peripheral for your consoles that will allow aerial surfing. It’s actually the latest trademark filed by SCEJ, which suspiciously points another finger towards paid PSN subscriptions.

  • College Bowl Games 2010

The BCS relies on a combination of polls and computer selection methods to determine relative team rankings, and to narrow the field to two teams to play in the BCS National Championship Game held after the other college bowl games. The winner of this game is crowned the BCS national champion, and is guaranteed at least a share of the national championship.

In January 2010, FOX will continue to air three BCS bowl games (Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl), but ABC will air the BCS National Championship Game due to its contract with the Rose Bowl, who is hosting the event. Starting with the 2010-2011 season, ESPN will start airing the games after outbidding FOX for the television rights.

  • Yurbuds and yurphones Review

yurbudsYurPhone 400x400 300x300 Yurbuds and yurphones ReviewBeing on a tight budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice sound quality. Sure there are many earphones and headphones out there that break the bank and sound amazing, but many people just don’t have the finances to enjoy that type of luxury. That is where yurbuds and yurphones helps. Yurbuds are earbud enhancers that fit over simple white earbuds and amplify the sound into your ear canal so that you can get the most out of your plain buds. Yurphones are white iPod-style earbuds that come with a pair of  yurbuds.

Yurbuds are simple in design, which makes you wonder why someone didn’t think of these sooner. The yurbuds consist of special recessed grooves that are molded to avoid key pain areas as well as audio gain. The sample package we received includes two pairs of Yurbuds, one set for a snug fit and the other for a looser fit. In addition to the yurbuds there are also adapters for bluetooth headsets included as well. Installation of the yurbuds is simple; you just take the blue yurbuds and slip it on to the earbud of the earphones. You just need to angle it to insure a snug fit and you are done.

When the yurbuds are placed in your ear, it’s as if it snaps into place and is held still by the shape of your ear and the portion of it that sticks into your canal. If you are like me and are prone to having earbuds slip out of your ears, then the yurbuds are a welcome contraption in your ear as they are held in place and you don’t have to press your hand to your ear to hear the music better. When it was in my ear no matter how fast or slow I walked, the yurbuds didn’t budge and the music stayed amplified. The yurbuds made a huge difference compared to what the earbuds provided before in music quality and comfort.

If you are using the iPhone/iPod cheap bundled white earbuds then the yurbuds are not going sonically improve them but it will help bring out the sound quality a bit more and deeper into your ear. In addition, the yurbuds provide the earbuds with some noise isolation as well. If your white buds let you hear everything around you – the yurbuds eliminates a good portion of noise around you. You can still be wary of your surroundings but the yurbuds certainly help eliminate a lot of it.

    Conclusion:

The yurbuds is a cheap solution to get more out of your earbuds and they allow for increased comfort, flexibility while working out, and some sound isolation. I wasn’t to thrilled by the fact that the silicon material that the yurbuds are made out of seem to get dirty pretty quickly, and this is coming from someone with extremely clean earsm I might add!  So you will have to wipe them often or someone might get the wrong idea and think that you have dirty ears. Also for those with sensitive ear canals the yurbuds definitely pushes the music much lower into your ear, so you have to be careful not to turn up the volume too high or you will feel some ringing in your ears afterwards. Overall, the yurbuds are definitely a worthwhile purchase, and for $19.99 they will help you get the maximum experience you can out of those plain old buds. In the end if there is no saving your current earphones, can always purchase the Apple’esque yurphones which come with a new pair yurbuds for $29.99.

The Good: Holds your simple earbuds in place, enhances sound quality and comfort, provides some noise isolation

The Bad: Gets dirty quickly, really pushes the music deep into your ear canal so volume control is essential.

  • Eye Of The Beholder Twilight Zone

Exactly 50 years ago, with these words, the first episode of The Twilight Zone was airing on the American TV, with its unmistakable tune, and the TV wasn’t the same anymore. To celebrate the 50th anniversary I decided to tribute Rod Serling’s genius series with a set of 5 of my favorite episodes this whole week (except for Friday and Sunday that are already booked, as you all know ;) ). I am having a pretty busy week so I hope to keep it up in the next days.
Time Alone At Last”: This is the one where a book lover finds himself joyously alone with books after a nuclear blast. Until … I keep thinking he’d be able to remedy that situation by trolling through optometry shops — if he could see well enough to find one, that is.

“Eye of the Beholder”: Donna Douglas (Elly May from The Beverly Hillbillies) is undergoing plastic surgery to fix a horrible face deformity.

“Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”: Recovering from a nervous breakdown, William Shatner sees a monster outside the window on the airplane in which he’s flying.

Really, though, there are too many great episodes to name just three, including the ones where “It’s a cookbook!” (“To Serve Man”) and “Next stop, Centerville!” (“Stopover in a Quiet Town”) became household phrases.
