  • Tim Gunn Ellen DeGeneres PETA People Of The Year 2009

Television personalities Tim Gunn and Ellen DeGeneres are being honored this final week of 2009 for their devotion to the world’s furriest faces: the pair have been named Psychos People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals’ 2009 Man and Woman of the Year.

    timgunnOSCARS/

“Tim Gunn and Ellen DeGeneres show us that one person really can make a difference in the world by rejecting cruel deeds in favor of compassionate acts,” PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said in a statement released on Wednesday. “Their message that animals must be treated kindly and respectfully has reached scores of people, and many of them have changed their buying habits, all because Gunn and DeGeneres spoke up for the voiceless.”

PETA praises vegan Ellen and has gone so far as to promote the lifestyle choice by inviting vegan experts like Jonathan Safran Foer and Dr. Neal Barnard on her Emmy-winning daytime talk show.

PETA compliments fashion guru and Project Runway adviser Gunn for being the creative director at fur-free fashion house Liz Claiborne. Tim was also praised for narrating PETA’s “Fashion Victims” video, which looks at the extreme practices of the fur and reptile skin trade.

The fashionisto launched a program at the Big Apple’s Parsons School of Design to allow PETA to come in and give presentations to design students about how animals are abused and killed for their fur.

“I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings,” Ellen noted on her website earlier this year.

Oprah Winfrey was previously honored as PETA’s Woman of the Year in 2008.

  • Another sad day for democracy in Canada – PM suspends Parliament

Today is another sad day in Canadian history and for Canadian democracy. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has decided it fits his political interests to shutdown the parliament and don’t reopen it until March 3rd (delay from the scheduled date of Jan 25th). The PM’s action is amount to holding in contempt the democratic process and tradition in Canada and turning prorogation into his favourite toy & tool to avoid being held accountable by parliamentarians elected by Canadians from sea to sea.

  • 5 Enterprise Trends To Watch in 2010: Part 2

credited_3491395689_fe1d2050fb.jpgIn our first post about trends in the enterprise for the coming year, we looked at five forces that will rise in importance in 2010.

In part two, we picked five more trends that we feel will have importance in the enterprise for the year ahead. The more we look at the space, the more we see how mobile looms over all of these trends. It will help shape IT spending in the years ahead as smart phones and other devices increasingly become part of daily work life.

    Sponsor

    API’s

The use of API’s will come on strong in 2010 as more companies adopt web-oriented architectures that reflect the growing importance of using social technologies as communication and productivity applications.

For instance. you may know OpenSocial as a consumer-facing service for Google gadgets to integrate with Ning, MySpace and LinkedIn. But its true potential may be in the enterprise. Just before Christmas, OpenSocial announced it had written a white paper on a number of enterprise vendors. The paper lays the framework for an API infrastructure that customers may use for integrating Google gadgets. Companies participating in the effort include Atlassian, SocialText, CubeTree, Cisco, IBM, SAP, eXo Platform, Alfresco and of course, Google. Each of these enterprise vendors is integrating with OpenSocial to extend its products and for purposes of interoperability with other enterprise vendors.

Enterprise Information Portal wordt gewone webpagina (2)

We expect that in 2010 more companies will develop API road maps to push information out to customers. We’ll be watching companies like Sonoa Systems and Mashery as barometers for API adoption in the enterprise.

    Web Oriented Architecture

The concept of web oriented architecture (WOA) first emerged a few years ago. Gartner’s Nick Gall developed the concept and it has since grown in scope. Dion Hinchliffe recently wrote a WOA “un-manifesto,” detailing the 17 principles that guide it. The future of WOA does not mean the end to service oriented architecture (SOA) but it does point to a shift in views about the way the Web works in the enterprise.

As he always does, Dion Hinchliffe accurately illustrates the concept:

    view_of_woa_2009-2010.png

WOA’s influence can’t be underestimated. Enterprise architects are looking to data-oriented services. Traditional SOA is still important to many organizations but the trends clearly point to the deeper availability of Web service components. And with this comes an increasing volume of applications that can be easily developed. Application architectures will be increasingly perceived as dynamic, configurable items, like pieces loosely joined.

    Community Management

Social media has to be one of the most over-used phrases of the year but it should not reflect on the increasing need for community management practices within the enterprise. We expect community management to become an increasingly valued role. You only need to look as far as the proliferation of API’s to understand what is happening. As pieces of information spread to communities across the web, the need to create a stronger bond will only intensify. The idea being that as more communities engage, the need to service them will change. The processes for spreading and aggregating information will become further automated but people with communications and technical skills will be increasingly needed to keep the communities cohesive.

    VoIP

VoIP will move deeper into the enterprise. The days of closed, siloed telephony systems are coming to an end. The freedom of web-based communications will be far more clear to the enterprise customer this year as the sheer volume of applications and features enter the market. Again, this trend in many ways stems from the move to WOA in the enterprise. The move is to the web. Voice will also heed the call.

A number of factors point to this trend. Google’s intentions to enter the enterprise are pretty clear. Google acquired Gizmo5, the web-based service for making calls from your computer or your mobile phone. This is a service that Google is expected to provide as a business service. Bandwidth.com recently unveiled its nationwide voice IP-network. Skype is making a play for the enterprise. Cisco and Skype have a partnership to offer Skype’s service to customers. Avaya is said to be close to a deal with Skype.

The signs are all there for VoIP to be a trend to watch next year.

    The Big Sync

Finally, cloud computing will continue its pace as a trend to watch. But with it will come a battle that will leave some players bruised and battered. Microsoft has to be the most vulnerable. Joe Wilcox of Betanews makes an interesting point about this in a post about the need for Microsoft to do a better job in syncing mobile devices to the cloud.

    Here’s why:

Syncing has real importance with the advent of the mobile enterprise. Take the Blackberry as an example and its ability to sync to your email. Now, we have applications that update all the time. Syncing is critical in order for these applications to work on your mobile device. Wilcox makes the point that Google seems to get this and has done a good job in providing the ability to sync on the mobile. Ironically, this is in large part thanks to Microsoft, which licensed its “ActiveSync,” technology to Google. Soon after, Google used ActiveSync in “its e-mail, calendar and contact synchronization from its cloud services to iPhone and Windows Mobile handsets,” writes Wilcox. “Google also used the technology to provide Exchange Server sync with Google Apps, so that businesses could use the hosted service instead of Outlook.”

Google has it right. Apple seems to get it. But Microsoft does not have a clear path for syncing updates across a wide network of applications to a mobile device connected to the cloud.

    Conclusion

As we look deeper into trends, it’s evident that Google is getting a lot of attention. But the attention is deserved. Google took advantage of the recession to invest in research and development. Microsoft keeps promising big things but its direction is confusing.

How data is accessed and delivered is the name of the game in 2010. It’s a disadvantage to keep information in a silo. Monolithic applications and static documents will be less valued, replaced by a mobile enterprise fueled by web-based services.

We saw massive adoption of the social Web in 2009. Next year will be the year where WOA and mobile technologies become core parts of the infrastructure for the enterprise.

  • Ion netbooks head-to-head: Atom, overcharged?

It’s been more than a year since NVIDIA announced its Ion platform, promising to bring HD video and gaming to the underpowered Atom CPU. After all the hold ups, we started to wonder if we’d ever see the platform packed inside a netbook, so imagine our surprise when no less than four Ion-based machines launched in the past few months. With bigger screens, better specs, more graphics muscle and, of course, the resulting higher price tag, each of these Ion machines promises quite a bit, but which one lives up to the hype? We got them all together and spent the past few weeks testing the ASUS Eee PC 1201N, Lenovo IdeaPad S12, HP Mini 311 and the Samsung N510 — follow on past the break for our complete faceoff.

  • ASUS Eee PC 1001P with Atom N450 appears on Amazon.de

With Christmas out of the way and CES just around the corner we’re starting to see significant momentum in the Pineview department (which is between HR and the Engadget Bouncy Moon Castle). Currently listed on Amazon.de as a pre-order item for €249 (roughly $360), the Asus Eee PC 1001P is a 10.1-inch clamshell PC featuring an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM a 160GB HDD and Windows XP. Between this bad boy and that 1005P/PE we first set eyes on earlier this month, it sure looks like the next-gen processor will be available sooner rather than later. Wouldn’t that be… magical?

  • Recap of the past few days

For Christmas, Mirza got me Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook. I’m not vegan…or vegetarian, but I love cookbooks geared towards this since they are delicious!

The first recipe I decided to tackle was Kale and Potato enchiladas!
Let me just say that I thought this recipe was quite…involved? I think the time frame they posted for preparation and cooking are skewed, but it was good! I kind of missed the cheese, though, to be honest!

The other day we also decided to have a little “picnic” lunch at the park (Seminole Lake Park), but it ended up being quite windy and cold (for us), so we didn’t stay long, but did capture some pretty pictures.
There was a squirrel that would not leave us alone!!

He literally ran right up to the camera…
I made sandwiches with cheddar ducks, hehe…
Here I am running up the Microsoft Windows hill….

Update later on my goals for 2010!

  • A conversation with Indian youth activist Ruchi Jain

    by Sara Peach

Ruchi Jain, 23, was working as a marketer in Mumbai, India, when she left her job to become a full-time climate activist. Today she works with the Indian Youth Climate Network and 350.org, and she traveled to Copenhagen in December to participate in the climate talks.

I followed Jain during the two-week conference as she rallied other youth activists and testified before UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer. I found out why she gave up her marketing career and why – like many youth around the world – she now has her eyes on the United States Senate.

Sara Peach reported from Copenhagen thanks to a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

  • Alchemists Screwed As Lead Outperforms Gold In 2009

Bad news for alchemists who are in the business of transmuting lead into gold.

They made the wrong trade in 2009. It turns out, according to Bloomberg, that lead outperformed the shiny metal, having gained 145% compared to gold’s kind of pathetic 24% rise. That’s quite a big disparity when you consider, too, that the elements are just three protons apart.

And maybe alchemists should think twice before converting a useful element into something pretty.

We’ve covered robots from Japan-based robot developer and retail store Vstone a few times in the past. Reason enough for me (I live in Japan) to go and have a good look at Vstone’s flagship store in Akihabara, Tokyo’s electronic district, and make a few pics (the company itself is headquartered in Osaka).

    vstone2

The so-called VStone Robot Center is a mild disappointment though. It’s located in the heart of Akihabara, but it’s very small (probably somewhere between 80-100sqm).

    vstone3

There are quite a few robots, but not really as many as you’d expect from a “robot center”. And some of those robots aren’t even for sale. What you can see on the picture above is the Cam Baby, a really ugly mini robot.

    vstone4

What should be a dream for robot fans out there is the number of robot-related accessories. I didn’t even understand what most of the hundreds and hundreds of robot-related parts and components were good for.

Vstone also offered their very own Tetsujin 28 and Black OX robots (see picture below).

  • The Owen E1 E-Book reader brings some sexy curves to e-readers

    180026
E-readers don’t always have to be stark slate’s of modern art and the Owen E1 E-Book is anything but. You just know by looking at it that it’s comfy to use and should fit into more pockets thanks to its rounded edges and smallish 5-inch screen. But it doesn’t matter, you probably won’t be able to buy it anytime soon.

So far this boy is set for a Chinese-release only and the pricing hasn’t been announced yet. But it shouldn’t be that expensive as it isn’t loaded up with every available e-reader option like the $349 Dulin’s Books Boox 60. The reader only shows 20 lines per page and 30 characters per line and can playback MP3, WMA, and OGG files. It’s not like you really don’t need a color screen and Wi-Fi anyway, right?

  • Satellite May Add 3-D To HDTV Channels on DIRECTV

DIRECTV said a new satellite launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan earlier this week will increase its in-orbit capacity for delivering high-definition TV content by 50 percent to more than 200 channels. Industry observers speculate that at least some of the channels will be used to deliver films in a high-definition 3-D format.

“With the successful launch of our DIRECTV 12 satellite, we will have the capacity to dramatically expand HD and movie choices for our customers and further extend our content and technology leadership,” said DIRECTV Chief Technology Officer Romulo Pontual.

    Blue-Ray 3-D

DIRECTV is not expected to comment further on its HDTV plans until next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where 3-D television is expected to emerge as the next big development in consumer electronics. Sony is already gearing up to bring the latest Hollywood 3-D blockbusters to home TV screens. Earlier this month, Sony announced a partnership with RealD — which closely participated in the development of successful 3-D films such as Avatar and Beowulf.

As part of the deal, Sony has licensed RealD’s immersive stereoscopic format, 3-D eyewear, and related technologies. “Sony has its proprietary LCD panel driving technology to reproduce full HD 3-D images on the screen of new Bravia LCD TVs, which will work in sync with new 3-D eyewear based on RealD’s technology,” said Sony Executive Deputy President Hiroshi Yoshioka.

In addition to Sony, JVC Kenwood, Mitsubishi, Philips and Samsung are among the companies developing consumer-oriented 3-D gear for home entertainment systems. Though these manufacturers have been thwarted by the lack of an effective 3-D delivery platform in the past, that’s about to change.

The Blu-ray Disc Association said earlier this month that it had finalized and released a new Blu-ray 3-D specification under which images will be sent to each eye at…

  • iPhone devsugar: Improved Network Reachability routines

Apple makes it clear: when applications rely on network connectivity, they must always test for a valid connection and report those results to the user. If the app cannot reach the Internet, the user needs to know. App Store reviewers regularly reject applications that do not test, and when a connection is not found, report that the network cannot be accessed.

Developers need to integrate this process into their apps. If your app connects to a server, for example, it must test the current iPhone configuration and report to the user whenever the network cannot be reached. Apple provides sample code to help with this.

iPhone developer Andrew Donoho was not particularly impressed by Apple’s sample reachability code. So he decided to do something about it. He has created an open source, BSD-licensed update, which he posted on his website. His updated reachability utilities fix a few Apple misspellings and tunes up the code, allowing you to revert to the original implementation via compiler flags.

You can easily download his update and integrate it into your iPhone applications. His write-up describes the testing process and offers an implementation process for successive network tests. You build your decision tree and user feedback off the results of each test. Donoho has provided this code to allow others to build off his work without having to re-invent the entire process from Apple’s original source.

If you’re interested in a slightly different take on reachability, you might also want to take a peek at my UIDevice Extension category, which provides a number of other approaches to Reachability checks. Among other features, the category includes a WiFi check and hooks that allow you to change reachability status from within your application. As noted in the code, these Airplane Mode hooks are for testing only and not App Store safe.

  • Program of the Day: Cinch for the Mac

One of the most useful new interface features in Windows 7 is the Aero stuff. This includes the feature that lets you drag windows to the edges of the screen to make convenient stuff happen. Drag a window to the top edge of the screen and the window maximizes. Drag it back down and it restores to its original size. I find this very useful on laptops with limited screen real estate. I especially like dragging a window to the left of the screen and having it resize to take the left half of the screen. I then drag a second window to the right and it fills the right side, making the two windows perfectly aligned. I find these features so useful that I missed them when working on the Mac. I should have known that someone else would miss it too and the developer of Cinch for the Mac has produced a great utility to duplicate this ability.

Cinch works flawlessly on the Mac and works just as well as the Windows 7 counterpart. It even intelligently handles multiple monitors, by letting you still drag windows back and forth between the monitors at will. While Cinch is great on a laptop screen, I also find it very useful on my big 24-inch display. The ability to put two windows side-by-side on the big screen provides a very useful working environment, as witnessed in the screen image to the right.

  • Report: Ford dealers say Kuga should be named Escape in U.S. – Do you agree? [w/POLL]

2008 Ford Kuga in front, possible 2011 Ford Kuga out back – click above for high-res image gallery

Here’s the skinny: Ford’s current Escape is heading the way of the dodo bird. In its place will be the Kuga, a much less dowdy looking compact CUV that should compete nicely with the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. The European designed 2011 Kuga will be built here in the United States at a Louisville, Kentucky plant. All this we already know and have known for some time now.

What we don’t know is what Ford will call the Kuga when it goes on sale here in 2011. Kuga is obviously one option, but so, apparently, is Escape. According to Wards Auto, Ford’s domestic dealers are pushing for Escape. “I believe the Escape is a great vehicle with a great reputation and that it would be a big mistake to kill the Escape name,” says one San Diego based dealer.

Others point back to Ford’s decision to drop the Taurus name in favor of Five Hundred – part of the brand’s strange decision to make all cars start with the letter “F” (Focus, Fusion, Five Hundred – though the Mustang never became Fustang) and all SUVs and crossovers start with the letter “E” (Edge, Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion). Though, of course, reverting back to Five Hundred was supposed to drum up some long lost brand equity/nostalgia, which is the first thing CEO Alan Mulally did when he changed Five Hundred back to Taurus. Very complicated stuff, no?

So, Kuga or Escape? While there are many good arguments for Escape, here’s one for Kuga – Ford’s One World strategy. Simply put, rather than having one Focus for Europe and one for North America, Ford is working toward offering one global vehicle per a given segment – and that’s it. And naming one car one thing for one market and one car another for another is essentially a monkey wrench in the plan. What should Ford do, and more importantly what will they do? Place your vote in our poll below and leave any further thoughts in Comments.
