  • Breaking: AT&T website stops selling iPhones in New York City?

    Filed under:

What kind of Christmas present is this? The Consumerist is reporting that AT&T has stopped selling the iPhone in the New York metropolitan area, at least via the company’s website, due to high data congestion (or possibly due to online fraud). Stephen in Brooklyn says he made the discovery while shopping on AT&T’s website for an iPhone today:

I was on the AT&T Wireless website trying to get an iPhone. However, when I put in my zip code 11231, the site says the iPhone is unavailable. This seemed a little odd so I started punching in other famous zip codes: 90210, 60609 (spiegel catalog), 02134 (zoom, an old children’s show).
For theses cities, LA, Chicago, Boston, iPhone is available. Then I looked up some other zip codes: Dallas, Miami, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco. All those cities are ok. Then I started putting in more NYC zip codes: midtown, Staten Island, the Bronx…no iPhone available.
This is weird…AT&T has cut off New York City.

Laura Northrup at the Consumerist contacted AT&T Customer Service to check if the lack of iPhone availability in New York City was a website glitch or a planned disruption. The online rep she chatted with confirmed that the phone was indeed not being sold to New Yorkers via the website, although it remains available via the Apple store website and via both Apple and AT&T physical stores. Mashable, BoyGeniusReport, and Gizmodo have also verified with AT&T Customer Support that the iPhone is indeed not available through website order in New York City.

This is sure to piss off thousands of potential customers in NYC. Let’s just hope AT&T Media Relations releases a statement clarifying when the ban will be lifted and if it will happen in any other cities. In the meantime, just think of this as more fuel for the fire as to why Verizon should have the iPhone; and of course, NYC iPhone shoppers can continue to pick up iPhones at the Apple Stores or at the AT&T outlets in the city.

  • New sensors protect priceless paintings in transit

The glass dosimeter detects the buildup of pollutant gases in picture cases (Photo: K. Dob...

Valuable paintings that are shipped or loaned to museums or other destinations around the world will soon have unusual traveling companions for their long journeys – sensors that can detect the buildup of pollutants within their specially-designed shipping crates. Occasionally, adhesives and other chemicals within the crates can breakdown and the fumes can damage the works of art. But the new sensors, developed by scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg, Germany, will detect these dangerous substances and help avoid the treasures being damaged…

  • Roasted Red Pepper Coulis

This is a recipe for the first component of a great recipe that I will present for your New Year’s Day breakfast or brunch. So, what exactly is a coulis? A coulis (pronounced kool-ee) is nothing more than a fancy French name for a thick sauce made from pureed vegetables or fruit that has been strained. This is the base sauce for the brunch dish but is an excellent and a very versatile sauce on its own. It is great as a condiment for most proteins, like beef, chicken or pork, or as a sauce for vegetables. It is a very simple sauce to make and can be made ahead of time for the upcoming special dish. I hope you enjoy.

    Roasted Red Pepper Coulis

    Ingredients:

    2 cups red pepper, roasted
2 tsp. olive oil, reserve 1 tsp.
    1/2 cup onion, diced
    1 Tbsp. garlic, minced
    1 tsp. dried oregano
1 Tbsp. fresh cilantro or 1 tsp. dried cilantro
    1 cup heavy cream
    salt and pepper

    Preheat oven to 400′

Seed the red peppers and cut into strips. Place on a sheet pan and toss with 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Roast for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until they have blackened slightly. Remove and set aside.

Preheat a medium sauce pan and add the remaining olive oil. Cook the onions and garlic on medium high until translucent. Add the roasted red peppers and herbs. Stir to combine. Add the heavy cream and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for about 10 minutes or until the sauce has been reduced by about one third and has thickened.

Carefully pour the sauce into a blender. Remove the small cap from the cover so that the steam can escape and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper if desired and pulse to combine. Pour sauce through a strainer and into a container and store in refrigerator for up to four days.

  • Odd question

Okay so this question might be kind of odd to ask but it’s something I am curious about. If you eat something that is slight sugary and you try things out and it doesn’t affect your sugar at all and it seems to be okay, does it still affect your body and organs on the inside? The way I see it, or the way I think is that if you eat something that some diabetics can’t without it making their sugar sky rocket, and it doesnt affect my sugar does that make it okay to have? I worry about it being okay for the time being and not affecting my numbers but what about long term as far as damage to kidneys or such? Still new to this so I am learning, thanks in advance for your answers 🙂
  • JibJab’s Year In Review Plays Off 2009, With Help From Keyboard Cat

2009 is coming to a close, which means it’s time to reflect on the events that shaped the last twelve months. And there’s nothing like a whirlwind animated musical to put everything into perspective. Cue JibJab, which has just released their annual Year In Review: a two minute video romp that recaps the last year in all its glory. The video is packed will everything from momentous events like the induction of our first black President to moments of unparalleled stupidity (Balloon Boy). Even Three Wolf Moon made the cut.

This is the fifth year that JibJab has produced their Year In Review, and we’re told it will be seeing airtime on a number of national television networks tomorrow. For those wondering how the video was made, the company has put together a thorough blog post detailing its production.

Aside from the video, CEO Gregg Spiridellis tells us that JibJab is having a very strong holiday season. The entertainment portal, which offers customizable Flash videos, greeting cards, and a variety of other content, drew 33 million unique visitors in the last month according to Quantcast. Spiridellis adds that the site has served 90 million video views this quarter alone (which was likely helped in part by its always popular ElfYourself feature).

  • High Shock Accelerometers, 3200BM & 3200BT Series

Chatsworth, CA – November 30, 2009 – Dytran Instruments is pleased to announce the release of two new series of high shock accelerometers. The 3200BM and 3200BT series of quartz shock accelerometers are designed to measure mechanical shock events of up to 100,000g’s amplitude.

These rugged miniature instruments feature compression design quartz seismic elements for very high natural frequency and ruggedness. On-board miniature IC amplifiers convert the very high impedance voltage signals from the quartz crystals to a much lower impedance level which allows these instruments to drive long cables with negligible signal loss.

The 3200BM and 3200BT series are offered in six different variations each, between 2,500g to 70,000g range. They feature a 10-32 axial connector, are electrically isolated from the sensor base and weigh just 6 grams.

This series is now produced in three basic variations, based on the type of mounting stud. The 3200B series has an integral ¼-28 mounting stud, while the new units released to this family have an integral 10-32 mounting stud (3200BT series) and a metric M6 x 1.0 integral stud (3200BM series). All other specifications are similar between all models.

  • Analyzing Facebook’s Forthcoming Redesign

Last week, a source emailed us two screenshots of Facebook’s forthcoming redesign. While it’s still a work in progress, it shows some simple yet major enhancements that reveal where the world’s largest social network with over 350 million subscribers might be headed. For starters, Facebook seems to be returning to its roots, emphasizing fidelity instead of noise in its news feed.

Here are some of the changes:

    • The navigation bar is reorganized, and thankfully, it seems like Facebook is removing the duplicate profile link. The name and profile links didn’t make much sense to begin with.
    • The search field is now next to the Facebook logo, a clear sign that the company wants search to play a major role in the future. Searches for brands, events, companies and celebrities will be more prominent.
    • By combining settings and login in an all-purpose “account” dropdown, Facebook is making the overall experience cleaner.
    • The sidebar is scaled down and takes a lot of cues from Facebook Lite. In fact, the new design takes inspiration from Facebook Lite in the way News Feed, Friends, Events and Photos are displayed.
    • Bookmarks is a smart way for users to add links to their favorite applications, fan pages or whatever.
    • Facebook IM is still firmly ensconced at the bottom right, but app quick links and notifications are gone.

Josh Brewer, a web designer friend of mine, believes the new design is actually pretty good and will help people consume a lot of information easily, without being overwhelmed. “I think that the changes Facebook is planning are solid, calculated design decisions based on a ton of data and research,” he said.

    What are your thoughts?

  • Possible Statin Alternative: Red Yeast Rice

The findings from one small study suggest that red yeast rice supplements may be a cholesterol-lowering alternative for people who’ve suffered one of the most common statin side effects — muscle pain.

red-yeast-riceThe news isn’t entirely new. Other studies have also suggested that red yeast rice can lower cholesterol. Yet, people with heart disease shouldn’t stop their statin medications and start the supplement without talking with their doctors.

There’s more medical studies to support the use of statins, and some supplements can be dangerous if not used appropriately.

Red yeast rice is available over the counter. It’s produced by fermenting red yeast over rice, and the supplement contains monacolins, statin-like compounds.

Researchers, who reported study results in American Journal of Cardiology, found that most people in the study who discontinued statins because of muscle pain were able to use red yeast rice or Pravachol (pravastatin), a cholesterol drug, for several weeks without muscle pain.

Just one of 21 patients taking red yeast rice for the study stopped due to muscle pain, and only two of 22 patients on pravastatin stopped.

For study participants taking red yeast rice, LDL levels fell by an average of 30%. Those who took pravastatin experienced a 27% drop in LDL. Lifestyle changes were also implemented to help lower cholesterol.

A recent CNN article on the red yeast rice study, warns that red yeast rice bought over the counter can contain widely varying potency among different manufacturers, and some brands of the supplements have even been found to contain a potentially toxic substance.

  • Injuries and BS

Went out for a bike ride today as the weather was relatively mild (almost 50) and roads were finally almost dry. On mile 10 my bike seat bolt sheared and I went flying into a ditch. Lots of road rash and a very sore shoulder but nothing broken (I hope).

Normally after a ride, my sugar is under 80 but instead it shot up to over 300 briefly. Has anyone else experienced an unexpected rise after injury?
