Osteoarthritis is considered one of the most debilitating of diseases, and is clearly the most common type of musculoskeletal disorders.
Our population has become riddled with this terrible affliction, with millions of new cases reported annually. The overall cost to society is estimated to be in the region of $100 billion.
While Osteoarthritis is not thought to be gender related, it is apparent that the disease is far more common in women, than in men.
Although age is an obvious factor in many cases of osteoarthritis, it’s also very clear that there are other areas of concern, such as sports injuries, or perhaps a previous auto accident, Any previous injury, broken bone etc. can become a contributing factor in later life to one’s osteoarthritis
condition.
Obesity is a worrying problem in our modern world and has a significant effect on those suffering with OA. Osteoarthritis is most commonly found in the hands, knees, hips and back, and can be especially problematic in the load bearing joints.
Osteoarthritis tends to be less prevalent in the shoulder joint, but not unheard of. OA pain in the shoulder region, or glenohumeral, will when in most cases be attributed to a previous injury.
Discovering the actual cause of one’s OA can be like searching for a needle in a haystack, some factors are known however and should be considered, such as what strain certain types of occupation may be having on the condition.
Being overweight is a modern day epidemic, one which can have serious consequences for all of us especially arthritics suffering with osteoarthritis. Losing those excess pounds will lessen the strain on the load bearing joints, which in turn can only help one’s OA. Read more…

Between the Carrera and the Monaco, TAG Heuer has plenty to offer anyone in the market for a classic driver’s watch. But if you’re having some trouble deciding between the two, the Swiss watchmaker has announced the re-release of the classic Silverstone Chronograph.
Originally introduced back in 1974, the Silverstone is inspired by the British circuit by the same name, with a rounded-square case inspired by the track’s curves. It featured the first automatic chronograph movement, and earned a following all its own.
The re-release will be available with a brown or blue face with coordinating perforated alligator leather strap, and bears the classic Heuer logo before TAG took over. Only 1,500 examples of the re-issue will be released, with a price tag of approximately $6,500 apiece.
At the same time, TAG Heuer has announced a renewal of its partnership with the McLaren team that launched twenty-five years ago, marking it one of the longest-standing sponsorships in the sport’s history. Follow the jump for press releases on both developments.

Media expert Michael Rich, MD, MPH, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children’s Hospital Boston, answers your questions about media use. Last week, he discussed Guitar Hero and age appropriate song lyrics.
Here’s this week’s question:
Q: I was made to feel ugly and repulsive (because I am a Black) when I was in middle school up to high school. I was treated like this by people of all races, including other Blacks. I want to know–do the negative portrayals of Black women in movies affects how teens view Black girls and women?
-Miss Represented, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
A: Dear Miss Represented,
In short, the answer to your question is yes: Media portrayals of Black women—or any other group of people, for that matter—affect how teens view them, regardless of whether the teens are themselves part of that group. For example, for a Black woman, media affect both how other people see her and how she sees herself.
Research suggests that when we are exposed to images repeatedly and over a long period of time, we internalize these images and measure ourselves and others against them. Therefore, when people are exposed to media that consistently portray people of color as less successful, less beautiful, and less worthwhile than White people, they tend to internalize those ideas.
Fortunately, there are conscious efforts underway by filmmakers to bring more diversity into media images and to portray people of many races and ethnicities in positive, healthful ways. And while there’s no way to undo the humiliation you were made to feel as a teen, you can help the young people in your own life by guiding them toward media choices that represent members of all races in a positive light and by helping them think critically about the media they consume.
Enjoy your media and use them wisely,
The Mediatrician

I want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Campus Chest Campaign. Even in these challenging economic times, we exceeded our goal because of the generosity of our faculty and staff.
I am proud to announce that we raised $584,199 this year, or 102 percent of our campaign goal.
You and your colleagues saw the need to help the less fortunate among us and responded to that need with an outpouring of generosity. Your enthusiastic support of programs designed to meet the community’s need is just another example of UT’s ongoing dedication to improving the lives of its students, employees, neighbors and friends in Knoxville and throughout the state of Tennessee.
Many of you made one-time donations, and many others made a commitment to a “fair share” contribution equivalent to one hour’s pay per month. You gave to the United Way of Greater Knoxville, the United Way in your own community, to Community Shares and to their member agencies and other social service and health agencies. Your donations enable these agencies to help many thousands of your fellow East Tennesseans in their time of need.
I want to especially thank campaign chair Jeff Chapman of the McClung Museum, vice chair Brian Browning of Finance and Administration, and the staff of Brian’s office, for their hard work and dedication during the campaign.
My personal thanks once again for your committed support of the UT Campus Chest.
FIMAT presents a brand new grinding machine for CV Joint cage windows.
After the new requirement of grinding cages with 4 up to 12 windows, even with different shapes on the same cage, FIMAT has designed a new grinder with 4 independent spindles (each driven by a controlled axis) and adjustable according to the type of cage to machine.
The new grinder will be able to machine cages with:
* 4 windows in 1 step (4 at once)
* 6 windows in 2 step (3 at once)
* 8 windows in 2 step (4 at once)
* 10 windows in 5 step (2 at once)
* 12 windows in 3 step (4 at once)
with cycle times ranging from 12 to 45 seconds according to the cage type.
As well as 4 spindle axes, 1 controlled axis is used for the cage vertical position and 1 rotational axis for oscillation and window pitch.
Moreover, the automation for workpart loading/unloading has been inproved by implementing a 3 axes gantry, also allowing a more compact and efficient machine layout.
Two main features of the standard machines have been kept: workpart automatic positioning and the simultaneous dressing of the 4 wheels by a motorized diamond roll.
The whole system is controlled by a Siemens 840D SL NC.

Keeping your eyes on the road is of the utmost importance no matter what kind of vehicle you are piloting. To that end, automakers all over the world have experimented with heads-up displays that show such vital information as your speed and navigation directions right on the windshield in front of the driver.
Now, a company called Recon Instruments is extending similar system to the two-wheeled world with a new technology that flashes the same kind of information right on a pair of goggles. The goggles were originally designed for ski, snowboard and snowmobile applications, but Recon envisions its technology being used in all kinds of sports, from mountain biking and motorcycle touring to kite surfing and scuba diving.
Recon expects to begin shipping its goggles in the Fall of 2010 for between $350 and $450 and is now accepting preorders.

The South African government has released fresh statistics that dovetail nicely with a current topic of fascination — peak gold, the ongoing and permanent decline of global gold production.
South Africa is the world’s #1 gold producer, but its production of gold, and as this data shows all minerals, has been on the decline for some time.
From the perspective of world mineral values, this would seem to augur tigher supplies (and higher prices?) going forward, but beyond that it would also appear to be a major headwind for South Africa — one of Africa’s brightest lights going forward.
And here’s the visual for total mining

No hacking here, but if you have a doggie, you may appreciate the tip. And yeah, I couldn’t resist posting up the pic of Molly’s cute dog, Colonel Mustard.
Molly shares, “After 5 years of heavy use, my Ektorp Lindalen sofabed slipcover needed to be replaced. I sprung for a new one when I bought my house, but had the old one left over and didn’t know what to do with it. I also needed a place for my beagle, Colonel Mustard, to hang out…and preferably not my newly-recovered couch.
The Colonel has had a rough time with dog beds – either he figures out how to chew them up or he ignores them. I noticed one day that his favorite place to curl up was my laundry pile, so I came up with the idea to stuff the retired cushion slipcover with old/stained/torn/worn-out clothes as well as a few old, deflated pillows. Stuffed it all in, zipped it right up, no sewing or construction needed.
It didn’t cost me a dime, it’s heavy-duty canvas, and more importantly, he LOVES it and hasn’t even tried to chew at it. I’m thinking it calms him when I’m gone because his owner’s scent is already built in by nature. But even if he ends up nibbling at it, it’s ok – I’ve got 3 more cushion covers left from the old slipcover!”
Some strong comments from an analyst at UK Standard Bank (via Bloomberg)
“We question the ability of countries like Ireland and Greece to grow out of the current crisis,” Steve Barrow, head of Group of 10 foreign-exchange strategy in London, wrote in a note today. “With interest-rate cuts, exchange-rate depreciation and significant fiscal support all off limits for these countries, it seems likely that bailouts, or even pullouts from EMU, are likely” before the end of 2010, he said.
If this really does happen — the first departures from the European Monetary Union since its inception — it’s hard to see that not being the chief economic story of the year. After all, there was once talk about the euro being a replacement for the dollar, and really, we haven’t heard anyone explain how this would work.
If people were worried about Dubai ripple effects, the effect of this would be way, way bigger.

A war on drafts has broken out at the UN Climate Change conference, on a day which also say the European Union (EU) commit $3 billion US to climate fund, the G-77 chief negotiator of walk out of talks in anger and a divisive split over a proposed the two degree target.
As the Danish draft continues to make it round, another draft has surfaced firmly putting demands on rich countries. In November, during a closed door meeting in Beijing, India, China, South Africa and Brazil, the four major emerging economies finalised an 11-page draft- the “Copenhagen Accord”. It proposes a “binding” amendment to the Kyoto Protocol calling for rich countries to reduce their carbon emissions by more than 40 percent compared to 1990 levels.
Led by Beijing, the initiative was conceived as a rebuttal by developing countries to the “Copenhagen Agreement” allegedly written by the conference’s host country.
According to AFP, the “Copenhagen Accord”, posted on the website of French daily newspaper Le Monde, embraces the objective of limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. It calls on rich countries, committed to CO2 reductions of at least five percent by 2012, to “multiply by eight” and points out that reductions should be made “mainly through domestic measures” and not through the purchase of so-called “offsets” outside their borders.
G-77 chief negotiator walks out of talks
Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aiping, chief negotiator for 130 developing countries walked out of a consultation meeting with UN representatives in anger, claiming the climate change conference will probably be wrecked by the “bad intentions of some people”.
“Things are not going well” a normally tight lipped Di-Aiping said to Danish TV.
In another development Di-Aiping called on US President Barack Obama stating it would be “embarrassing for the US not to be part of a solution to save humanity”. The “USA is the worlds largest emitter historically and per capita. A reduction of four percent compared to 1990 levels will not help save the world. We ask the USA to join the Kyoto Protocol and take on commitments comparable to Annex 1 countries (industrialized countries)” said Di-Aiping.
“This is a challenge that President Barack Obama needs to rise as a Nobel Prize winner and as an advocate of a multilateral global society. We know he is proud to be a part of that community through his family relations in Africa” he added.
The Two Degree Split
Analysis from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that a temperature increase of two degrees Celsius can be said to be a threshold value. Above this value the effects of climate change would probably be more difficult to manage and would compound at a quicker pace. Now, more than 100 nations back even tougher climate goals.
The 1.5 Celsius goal would require cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by rich nations of at least 45 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.
More popular than Tiger Woods
“Copenhagen” is now the number one search query on the world’s leading internet search engine, thwarting US golfer Tiger Woods from the top spot.

Google is always updating the satellite imagery in Maps and Earth to provide its users with updated or better quality images. This comes in handy in a lot of cases, so it’s obvious why the company is investing so much in acquiring the imagery. If it were only that Google would be like any other company, but it also does things that most companies don’t and that don’t really have a clear financial incentive behind them. Google Earth has added Mars as a destination for a while now, and Google has just updated some of the imagery and also added some new information on several locations.
“The updates are from the High Resolution Stereo Camera aboard the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter. With these updates, nearly half of the martian surface is covered by imagery having a nominal resolution of 25 meters per pixel. As such, there are many exciting, newly-visible surface features to see,” Eric Kolb, a Googler with a very nice sounding title, geo data strategist, wrote.
You can see the new data either in the embedded Google Earth gadget, if you’re on Windows or Mac, as there isn’t an Earth plugin for Linux yet, or you can download the KML file provided and view it in the desktop version of Google Earth. The new images are highlighted with a red frame while the 3D terrain data updated is marked with a … (read more)
Jim Rogers has been doing the media rounds lately, and yesterday evening he showed up on CNBC talking to Maria Bartiromo.
He remains — not surprisingly at all — bullish on gold and silver.
CNBC: With central banks now buying gold and many people worried about paper money, gold will be a great investment over the next decade and relatively few people are invested in it, he said.
At a speech in Prague Rogers surveyed about 300 people, including big money managers, and 76 percent had never owned gold, he said.
“So when you say it’s a bubble … nobody owns gold yet,” Rogers said.
Still, silver is preferable, with silver 70 percent off its all-time high and gold near it’s all-time high, he said.

Here is another example of military technology that will have significant civilian benefit … in this case fuel cell powered unmanned drones (very small planes).
“The Ion Tiger is small prop driven plane that promises to carry a five pound payload and stay aloft for more than 24 hours … power source is series of hydrogen fuel cells that crank out 500 watt … power the three quarter horsepower prop motor …”
“On Oct. 9-10, the 37-pound Ion Tiger stayed aloft for 23 hours and 17 minutes at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, just missing its 24 hour goal …”
“… advantages to a hydrogen-powered craft like Ion Tiger … cheaper and fuel (water!) and zero emissions assuming the hydrogen comes from a non-polluting source … biggest advantage is the absence of heat and noise generated by an internal combustion engine which makes the Ion Tiger is hard to detect. ”

It was rumored recently that some politicians were going to investigate Wikileaks for some leaked documents that were posted there. The details weren’t clear, and I was hoping something was lost in the translation, and they meant that the politicians would be investigating the leaks not the site Wikileaks for posting it. No such luck apparently. Three Congressional Reps have apparently asked Homeland Security what can be done about sites that post leaked documents, including not just Wikileaks, but Cryptome as well. In the letter to Homeland Security, they basically suggest that if needed, they’ll put forth legislation that would make reposting such content illegal, which could create one hell of a First Amendment legal battle at some point. Either way, these politicians are focused on the wrong things. The problems aren’t these sites, which are just service providers for the information. The problems are the leaks of info themselves.

Strong, no-nonsense, independent Kanna takes center stage again in volume 06 (that’s her in color on the cover), in a world shrouded by the choking control of the all-powerful Friends. When bumbling Detective Chono comes looking for drag queen Britney, Kanna know she’s got to find her friend before the dirty cops get to her. Together with fellow queen Mariah, Kanna does everything she can to protect Britney, especially when the threesome discover a horrific plot involving an impending Papal visit. Chono desperately wants to help – hoping to become a hero like his late grandfather who was erased for knowing too much – but wishing doesn’t always make it so, especially if you’re a bit of a gullible young fool …
Meanwhile, manga artist Kakuta whose only crime is … well … just drawing comics … lands in the infamous Umihotaru (with great irony, the pastoral name means ‘firefly of the sea’) Prison, home to “the most dangerous criminals in the country … who have committed the most heinous crimes.” Bewildered and lost, Kakuta, now just “1498,” ends up in solitary confinement for a minor infraction, where he comes to face-to-face with “the monster” who bears the number 3 … could he actually be a divine savior? Time is running out. Kanna is the final hope … and she’s facing down some major trouble …
The latest volume is over way too soon because you won’t be able to put it down … alas, alas, the next installment isn’t due out until February!

What has only been available for research and scientific work for many years can now be used in industry for the measurement of moisture. The moisture measuring TRIME®-TDR technique patented by IMKO Micromodultechnik GmbH offers considerable advantages, which have not been possible in this form with measuring techniques up to now. With SONO-probes IMKO is presenting a new generation of moisture probes. In particular, they have been developed for the construction industry and for the manufacture of food stuffs, however they can be applied in further important industries. Their secret: The application of the most modern TRIME® radar technology (Time-Domain-Reflectometry). Via an electromagnetic TDR-impulse with a frequency of 1 GHz SONO-probes measure the water content precisely until the material has become saturated, and they continue to measure beyond this stage. In addition, valuable observations can be made regarding the mineral content or the consistency of the material measured. An extremely wide variety of devices can be equipped with SONO-probes and they can be connected to all control systems without any problem.
In order to determine the moisture of a material, TRIME® measures the characteristic value of the material, the “dielectric constant (DC)“, with high frequency electromagnetic waves.
The DC is composed of a real and an imaginary fraction. There is no electric measuring technique, which can distinguish either of these two fractions of the DC, without a considerable amount of effort and so a mixture of the real and imaginary fractions is always measured.
However, it is only the real fraction, which constitutes the measurement for the water content. The imaginary fraction constitutes the measurement for the dielectric losses, e.g. through electric conductivity, temperature, etc. The imaginary fraction is thus a disturbing factor in the measurement of water content and delivers the well-known deviations in the measurements under temperature fluctuations and a high conductivity of the measured objects during capacitive and microwave measuring techniques.
Amongst all dielectric measuring techniques the TRIME®-TDR technology offers optimal physical conditions for the precise measurement of moisture, … and what is more with objects to be measured at temperatures of up to 150°C.
