  • High Performance and Versatility

Dormer has added a new range of Universal coated cutters to its rapidly expanding portfolio of solid carbide rotary tooling.

Designed to promote a highly competitive milling operation, the S922 (2 flute), S933 (3 flute) and S944 (4 flute) cutters are recommended for use in a wide range of machines, applications and material types – including steel, cast iron, titanium, nickel, copper, aluminium and synthetics. Consequently, they offer the significant added benefits of reducing inventory and saving time on tool changeover.

Maurizio Tardivo, development manager for cutters at Dormer, explains: “The rationale behind the new universal end mills was to develop a range of extremely versatile milling cutters. Providing a stable design for contouring – both semi-finishing and finishing – ramping and slotting operations, they will help users improve production efficiency in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

All cutters feature a Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN) surface treatment that provides improved stability to the cutting edges and offers outstanding protection against wear. Combined with high toughness properties and oxidation stability, the coating brings not just improved tool life but also higher productivity compared to uncoated cutters of the same design.

The flute geometry has been designed to facilitate swarf evacuation and promote a continuous, trouble-free machining operation, while reinforced end teeth reduce chipping, particularly important on materials with low machinability.

    Each cutter is available from 2.0mm – 20.0mm and also as a 6 pc set containing 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0 & 10.0mm diameters.

The product launch is supported by a comprehensive brochure that includes full range details, dimensional data and optimum operating conditions.

Further information is available by contacting your local Dormer office or by visiting the website

  • Anger, frustration, and unconditional love

Life with kids isn’t always a  picnic in the park.  But, I still love them unconditionally.

For the past week I’ve been crocheting Christmas bonnet wall ornaments.  I give them out for Christmas presents to family and friends because money is very tight right now.  It take me six hours to crochet each bonnet, not including the starching, drying, and decorating time.  It takes less than a minute to starch them but, the drying time exceeds 8 hours .  Decorating them takes about 15 minutes.  So, with that being said, it takes over fourteen hours for the finished project.

I have produced 10 bonnets of all different colors.  I was so proud of myself for getting them done in plenty of time for Christmas.  Dealing with the pain that Fibromyalgia entails, it was a feat in itself.  However, I endured the pain and fatigue just to ensure that there were enough gifts for everyone on my list.
This afternoon, after finishing my last bonnet and placing it on the starching board to dry, I retired to my bed for a nice long nap.  While images of smiling faces receiving my gifts danced through my head, I was quite unaware of what was going on in the living room.  To my despair, my two sons were wrestling and knocked over a cup of coffee that I had abandoned earlier.  When I opened my bedroom door, I almost cried.  Coffee was splashed all over my Christmas bonnets, table, chairs, floor, and the boys.
Once I had the mess cleaned up, I took inventory of what was salvageable.  I had only saved four ornaments.  Well… it’s back to the starching board.  Thank God I still have time.  Needless to say, the boys spent the rest of the night in their rooms.  But, from the heart of a mother, I still went upstairs and tucked them in, doled out hugs and kiss, and wished them a good night.  After all, a mothers love is unconditional.

  • REPORT: Danica Patrick to race NASCAR in 2010

    Filed under:

More Danica Patrick news and this time, it’s actually racing related. Last week came a report that Ms. Patrick had inked a multi-year deal with the recently restructured Andretti Autosport, putting to rest the rumors that the sometime-swimsuit model was headed to NASCAR. Well, Sporting News is now reporting that the gun might have been jumped on that conclusion. It seems that the GoDaddy pitchwoman is about to announce a deal to drive for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s NASCAR Nationwide Series team in 2010.

SN is reporting that Danica will run the full IndyCar calendar and a limited Nationwide schedule, with GoDaddy sponsoring her stock car. According to the GoDaddy website, the formal announcement will come at 1 PM ET Tuesday, December 8. We’ll be sure to watch for that announcement and update as needed.

  • French Government’s Plan To Help Book Publishers Adapt: Have Them Embrace Three Strikes Plan

PrometheeFeu writes “The French Minister of Culture Christine Albanel has just been assigned a mission to prepare the French publishing industry for the digital economy. The phrasing of the mission-letter makes it clear that while developing legal offerings and digitizing books is part of the plan, the focus is on getting the cooperation of publishers to enforce the 3-strike law (Google translation from the original). The language actually talks about inciting publishers to do so which leads me to wonder why the government should incite people to exercise their rights if they don’t want to do so…

The letter makes it clear that IP enforcement is seen as the only way to distribute value to authors and distributors (consumers are not mentioned). Here is a choice quote:

“The government cannot accept to see another cultural industry threatened by the pillaging.”

The letter also mentions the “damages observed for the music and film industries through the growth of illegal downloads.” Obviously, no sources are given for that information. Most amusingly, the letter states that Christine Albanel (who kindly told us that OpenOffice comes with a firewall which would somehow block illegal downloads) should use in this mission her experience in working with the music and film industry. I like many French authors and I sincerely hope that they ignore whatever she says and instead try something which might actually work, but I’m not holding my breath…”

Super Snake vs. Godzilla – click above to watch the video

Recently, we ran a little poll in which we asked which car would you prefer: A Nissan GT-R or a Ford Shelby Mustang GT500? The results – which aren’t too surprising – had just over two thirds of you rooting and tooting for Godzilla. And that’s all fine. However, someone pointed out that the contest should have been between Godzilla and the new Shelby Super Snake. Well guess what?

Thankfully, Motor Trend has totally obliged you. In this video, the 412-horsepower and 393 pound-feet of torque (at the wheels, people, at the wheels) Nissan GT-R takes on the 635 hp and 581 lb-ft of torque Shelby GT500 Super Snake do the quarter-mile. The results? We’re going to make you jump to find out, but we aren’t surprised. At all. But then again, we’ve driven both cars (in fact, this appears to be the exact 2010 GT-R we drove). We will however say hats off to our buddy Ed Loh at MT for making such a fun video. Click here to watch it. Thanks to Pete for the tip!

  • Should You Give Moms a Maid for Christmas

My sister wants a maid for Christmas. Just to come once, clean her house from top to bottom and get everything really nice for the new year. She wants her to come the day after the kids go back to school from the holidays. Honestly, it isn’t a bad idea, though it will probably cost $400 or more for someone to come out once and clean an entire house. There is something really appealing about starting your new year out with a nice, clean house instead of spending two weeks getting it all back into shape yourself after several weeks of children, friends and family scattering toys and crumbs about. I’m not sure how it would go over as a  gift for someone who didn’t ask for it, though.

    maid service as a gift

I do think that this is definitely a gift that not everyone can give. If you’ve ever commented to your daughter, daughter in law, or wife that her place could use a good cleaning, you probably don’t want to give a maid as a gift in case she feels that the maid is your idea of a second cleaning hint instead of the thoughtful gesture you meant it to be. If your wife knows you could care less about the dust bunnies under the bed, but you gave her a toaster oven for her birthday, she’d probably feel a bit like the romance was gone if her next gift was a maid. So, you should probably think about how the gift could be perceived before calling your local house cleaning service.

Would you feel offended if someone gave you a day of housecleaning for Christmas or would you throw your arms around the gift giver and emit cries of joy?

  • Mobeedo location-based service coming to Windows Mobile

Mobeedo is a location-based service that aims is to provide a mobile information system adequate for the mobile age. The software is:

    • open to anybody who wants to consume or provide situation-specific information or services via mobile phones
    • multi-purpose: mobeedo allows for significantly more than just, for example, indicating that a particular Wikipedia article could be of interest at your current location: virtual summit logs, avalanche warning services, speed trap alert systems or change trains notifications are only a few examples of what can be implemented easily solely based on standard web technology.
Essential for this is that besides location (annotated in form of an arbitrarily shaped polygon rather than only a single POInt) also time and speed as well as the parameters language and age are taken into account. In addition, personal IDs allow for restricting the visibility/availability of information or services to specified groups and individuals. Also, the URI referencing the content relevant to the defined situations can be dynamic, i.e. contain situation parameters.
    • easy to use: the search for and indication of information relevant to the user’s current situation does not require any interaction, the actual download only requires a single touch on the indicating bar. As soon as the linked content is not relevant anymore, the corresponding notification automatically disappears without leaving traces.
    • free of charge for consumers and non-profit information and service providers
    • anonymous, i.e. no tracking of the mobile user

The software is currently available on Android, and has just been submitted to Marketplace. We look forward to declaring our whole street a no-parking zone when it comes out ;) .

  • COP 15: fours snippets

There is a real excitement in the air, with some 20 thousand people turning up from every corner of the world and a party atmosphere in the streets. The talk, however, is all climate:
    1. Nick Stern in a speech a couple of nights ago talked of the stark choice we face between acting fast or sliding into disaster, and thus how important this Conference was to the future of the planet. Lord Giddens talked of the Copenhagen Conference being, with the sense of pressure for a global agreement and over 100 heads of States turning up, the first real gathering for global governance: an historic event.

    2. More practically, Q-Cells, one of the world’s largest photovoltaic solar companies, claims that solar cells have reached grid price parity in key markets, such as Italy and Germany. That means that solar cells are price comparable with fossil fuel energy (gas in Italy’s case) coal and gas for Germany. Big news! Why would you still build coal, let alone high-emission-potency gas?

    3. According to the International Energy Authority, 77% of the energy infrastructure that will exist in the world 2050 has not been built. So we have an extraordinary chance to make sure it’s infrastructure for a low-carbon, not a high-carbon, economy.

    4. Denmark’s ATP pension fund, one of the largest in the world, announced that they’re setting up
ATP will set up a € 1 billion ‘Institutional Investor Climate Change Action Fund for Emerging Economies‘. The aim is for the Fund to become a joint initiative involving several like-minded institutional investors.  The Fund will operate on private sector conditions and only invest in projects that are expected to deliver relevant risk-adjusted rewards.

  • Irony: Federal Government Workshop On Openness… Closed To The Public

The Obama administration still has a very mixed record on transparency and openness. Despite promising to be a lot more transparent and open, the federal government has been extremely selective in where it actually is open. So, yes, it’s done a decent job with some online projects like Recovery.gov and USASpending.gov, but in other areas, such as on ACTA negotiations the government has resisted openness at pretty much every turn. So, while perhaps it’s understandable, it does seem rather ironic that the federal government’s workshop on openness is closed to the public. Yes, it’s an internal workshop for federal government employees, but it certainly seems to be a symbolic point that openness is something that’s talked about more often than done.

  • Xo skin Review

image XO skin is the newest full body skin for mobile phones. The company just recently started shipping and I have a copy of their skin here to give you a short and sweet review of.

    Ease of install

This skin comes in a case with everything you need to get it installed on your device. The package includes: a squeegee, the full skins, skin spray and a nice great box. The kit has the directions on how to install right in the package so it should not be that hard for you to figure it out and install it. It take a good 5 steps to install and it could not be any easier. It took me about a good 3min to get it on my device and all the air pockets out, then another 20min to dry off. So for ease of install, it is really easy.

    Final look and fit

The installing of this skin is easy, but the final result is not as good. The material that it is cut from is very nice material that I cant seem to scratch. It is very flexible and it even after stretching it and everything it still fit on my device. The skin wasn’t as good of a fit as I would have liked, it didn’t get to all the edges and I really hate when that happens. That only happened to the front piece, so it was not so bad for the back piece and the side pieces. This is not the best screen protector I have used, but for the price, it is pretty decent.

We will be giving some away this week, so look out for that.

    Ease of Install: 5/5
    Fit:3.5/5

  • Audi A7 confirmed for U.S. and S8 model in the works, but once again, no A5 Sportback

2011 Audi A8 – Click above for high-res image gallery

At last week’s tony Design Miami reveal of the 2011 A8 luxury cruiser, we were able to corner Johan de Nysschen, Audi’s executive vice president in North America, and ask him for some tasty tibits on the brand’s upcoming products, including the A8‘s sexier derivative, the A7.

In addition to giving us the first official confirmation of the A7’s existence, de Nysschen revealed that the four-door coupe model will slot in “a little bit below” the new A8 in terms of pricing, just as we expected. Of course, it’s worth noting that the 2011 A8 faces a price bump due to substantial increases in content and technology, so when the A7 finally comes to the States, the average model is likely to sticker at around $82,000-$83,000, which de Nysschen says is about the price for a typically equipped 2010 A8 (pricing starts at $74,550 plus delivery).

Based on Audi’s new longitudinal modular platform technology, the A7 will be clearly related to the A8 (and the A6 replacement that will follow it), and de Nysschen says that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Sportback concept car serves as a “very reliable indicator” of what the production model will look like. Judging by recent spy shots from our friends at KGP, that very much appears to be the case. While parts commonality will be “substantial,” de Nysschen says that the A7 will not use the full aluminum spaceframe design of the A8, although it will have aluminum elements.

As expected, the A8 will launch Stateside in both standard and long-wheelbase formats, with the latter predicted to make up the lion’s share of the volume (the A8L presently accounts for about 80 percent of the model’s sales).

We asked De Nysschen about how the two models will interact in the full-size luxury sedan segment, and he noted that:

“This top end segment is characterized by more conservative people, and we need to clearly take lower levels of risk with a flagship model [the A8]. But we recognize too that there is a sizable enough cluster of customers in that same segment who are ready for a more avant-garde design [the A7]. So we will essentially be positioning two cars into the same segment, which means that independently, the volume each attains is not that significant, but when you put them together, it will mean that our share of that segment will grow quite dramatically.”

All-in De Nysschen thinks that the A8 will account for about 4,000 to 5,000 sales per year in the U.S., and the less costly A7 could clear 7,000-8,000 additional units.

And what of a high-performance S8 to take on Mercedes-Benz’s AMG lineup, or the A5 Sportback? Click through to the jump for more details.

  • Ōoku: The Inner Chambers (vol. 2) by Fumi Yoshinaga, translated by Akemi Wegmüller

Although the second volume of Ōoku, a recently introduced (in translation) gender-bender series, this latest could definitely read as a stand-alone love story. And quite a unique and memorable one at that!

The series’ premise is that in an alternative history of premodern Edo Japan, the mysterious Redface Pox has wiped out the majority percentage of the male population. Here volume 2 shows how a feisty young woman ascended the throne.

Royal blood provides no protection against the virulent pox, and in 1634, two years into the epidemic, the third Tokugawa shogun, Lord Iemitsu dies. His wet nurse, the all-powerful Lady Kasuga, is not willing to watch the dynasty fall apart without a ruler. She devises an elaborate plan to at least keep the royal bloodline alive by installing Iemitsu’s only known heir – a daughter illegitimately begotten through heinous violence – as his successor, disguising her gender. When Arikoto, the new abbot of the Keiko-in, a Buddhist monastery “four and fifty days” from Edo, arrives at the castle to pay his respects, he becomes an unwitting prisoner of the royal court. The abrupt and gruesome murder before his eyes of one of his acolytes and a courtesan convinces him he has to stay … and renounce his monk’s vows, as well. Will his beautiful gentility and steadfast kindness tame the royal heiress?

A fascinating endnote explains that the character of the male monk Arikoto is actually based on the real-life concubine of the same name of the real-life Iemitsu. In fact, this volume is essentially a gender-bender historical rewrite. The original Arikoto was the abbess (not the abbot) of Keiko-in when Iemitsu decided he had to have her. The real-life Lady Kasuga had Arikoto added to the real-life Ōoku to serve Iemitsu, never mind her otherworldly vows. Eventually, Arikoto took over running the Ōoku when Kasuga died, and is credited with bringing “many courtly refinements” to those inner chambers. Really, you can’t make this stuff up! With Yoshinaga’s deft depictions, lucky readers will certainly enjoy some fabulous history lessons indeed.

Wimmer RS 386-hp GTI — Click above for image gallery

Wimmer RS played around with a VW GTI, and this is the result: nothing too much on the outside and terror under the hood. The exterior, especially for a German tuner, is admirably untouched: just a set of 20-inch Motec Antares wheels, and a lower stance with height-adjustable coilovers.

Up front, though, the revisions take the 211-hp, 2.0-liter TFSI up to 386 hp and 336 ft-lb of torque. The upgraded grunt is courtesy of a new turbo and a thorough rework of the intake and manifold, injection valves, piston rods, fuel pump, and other sundries, along with a new software flash. Top speed is 166 mph, which just might be fast enough to outrun those graphics. Follow the jump for the press release, or have a look at it in the gallery of photos below.
