  • Can You Eat Papaya Seeds?

Papaya seeds are black and resemble peppercorns. Many people wonder if they are edible. The answer is yes. In fact, papaya seeds are used in many recipes and have several health benefits (see link at the end of this article for a list of papaya seed health benefits).

They have a peppery taste and can be ground up and used as a substitute for black pepper.

  • Porsche cancels Boxster/Cayman production contract, Magna wants cash

2009 Porsche Boxster S – Click above for high res image gallery

Shortly after the Boxster debuted in 1996, Porsche contracted with Valmet Automotive of Finland as a second production source for the sports car, and a few years later, employed the facili along with the Cayman coupe. In 2008 Porsche decided that it would shift that production contract from Valmet to Magna International and its assembly plant in Graz Austria. Today, with Porsche being subsumed into the Volkswagen Group, the sports car maker has decided to cancel the Magna deal. With Volkswagen now buying up the remains of Karmann, the Boxster and Cayman are now expected be built at the coachbuilder’s factory in Osnabrueck, Germany.

Magna claims it has already invested a significant amount of money on development to prepare for production. As a result Magna is seeking €400 million in compensation from Porsche. There’s no word from Stuttgart on its plans to repay Magna, but with VW’s legal arm exercised and ready to go, the battle is sure to be drawn out over the coming months and years.

  • 4 Health Benefits of Papaya Seeds

Not only are papaya seeds edible, but they are also good for you. Here are four health benefits of papaya seeds.

    Antibacterial Properties
Research has found that papaya seeds are effective against E. coli, Salmonella, and Staph infections.

    Kidney Protection
Research has found that papaya seed extract may protect the kidneys from toxin-induced kidney failure.

    Eliminates Intestinal Parasites
There is evidence that papaya seeds eradicate intestinal parasites. In a study done on Nigerian children with intestinal parasites, 76.7% of the children were parasite-free after seven days of treatment with papaya seeds compared to only 16.7% of the children who received a placebo.

    Liver Detoxifier
In Chinese medicine, it is believed that a teaspoon of papaya seeds will help detoxify the liver. Papaya seeds are often recommended by natural doctors in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver.

  • Kremsmunster Observatory

    Austria, Europe | Wonder Cabinets

Today, arguments are often framed as science vs. religion, empiricism vs. spirituality, but not so long ago it was quite normal for science and religion to live side by side, in both buildings and people.

The monastery at Kresmunster was founded in 777, when according to the story, the Duke of Bavaria’s son was killed by a wild boar. Nearly a thousand years later the monastery was going strong and had become, like many other monasteries thoughout Europe and particularly those of the Jesuits, Augustinians and Benedictines, a center of scientific as well as theological study.

The Kresmunster wanted to display this scientific knowledge in one place. Planned by Friar Anselm Desing, the building was to be a reflection of all of nature in a nine story building. The height and design of the building was a feat in and of itself and is said to be one of the first examples of modern high-rise architecture.
The building was also one of the first buildings devised to be used as a natural history museum.

Leading the viewer in a progression of complexity, (or at least as that was imagined in 1748) the first two floors displayed inanimate objects of nature such as geological and fossil specimens, the third and forth housed the botanical and zoological collecitons, and the sixth and seventh displayed ethnography, archeology and the arts and sciences, (art and science were also much more closely aligned in this period) as examples of what human life can achieve.

The final two levels were cosmological, designed to study the heavens, and statues of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, and Kepler now decorate the staircase to the eighth floor, an observatory meant to help the monks understand the physical nature of the heavens. It was in this observatory that Benedictine monk and director of the observatory Placidus Fixlmillner first computed the orbit of Uranus. The ninth and final level, was reserved for a small chapel for the monks to reflect not on the physical properties of the cosmos, but on the meaning of them.

Among the other facilities at the monastery they operated a weather room, the only one in the world to have stayed in operation in the same spot for nearly 250 years, since 1763. Meteorological observations are still made there to this day. The monastery-cum-museum continued to collect over the years and has added many specimens to the curio cabinet style displays.

Among them are the skeleton of a cave bear, a mammoth tooth, an icthyosaur, very rare glass models of invertebrate creatures made by Leopold Blaschka (whose other models can be seen at the Harvard Natural History Museum) an Egyptian mummy, an extensive humming bird collection, a collection of pocket sundials, terrestrial and celestial globes and a sextant used by Kepler.

The Kremsmunster Observatory, originally known as a mathematical tower, is a rich and heady mix of religion, science and art, and the monasteries science tower now has yet another layer added to the brew, history. It is now a walk through the past, and a look back into a time when all things, science, art and even religion, lived in much closer quarters then they do today.

  • Papa John’s selling recovered Camaro diecast, free pizza and charity involved

We’re suckers for a happy ending – especially when it involves cars, kids, and hot pizza. Recall, if you will, this past summer when John Schnatter, founder of Papa John’s Pizza, was on a nationwide quest to find his beloved 1971 1/2 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 – a car he sold in the mid-Eighties to fund his first store. John found his car in Kentucky, paid out more than a quarter of a million dollars in finder’s fees, and then generously gave free pizzas from its 2,600 nationwide locations to all Camaro owners on August 26th.

Still feeling more than a bit elated with the return of his Z28, and intent on providing hope and inspiration to less fortunate children, Schnatter has now created a nifty little 1:64 scale diecast replica of his car. The metal cars sell for $4.99 apiece and each one comes with a coupon for a free medium cheese pizza ($1 from each car purchased will be donated to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation). In addition to selling the cars online, Papa John’s is donating 5,000 mini Camaros directly to Toys for Tots. All told, Papa John’s is contributing more than $155,000 to the Marine program and touching countless lives in the process. Go ahead and order a couple… we did. Full press release after the jump.

  • BMW continues curtailing racing programs

BMW 320si WTCC, BMW-Sauber F1.07 and Formula BMW FB02 – Click above for high-res image gallery

What would BMW be without racing? We could be about to find out if recent developments are any indication. The Bavarian automaker competed in F1, the World Touring Car Championship and various sportscar series, while running its own Formula BMW feeder series that has helped breed such talents as Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. The automaker announced its withdrawal from Formula One at the end of this year, and reports now indicate that they’ll be severely curtailing their participation in the World Touring Car Championship as well.

BMW mounted a concerted comeback effort in the WTCC this year, only to narrowly lose out again to SEAT. Whether the decision is directly related to the upset or not is unclear, but reports out of Europe say that BMW will be reducing the number of its cars in the championship next year from five to two. That means eliminating the national teams system it had in place, consolidating and putting its WTCC-spec 320si in the hands of Team Schnitzer (the erstwhile BMW Team Germany), which gains triple champion Andy Priaulx from BMW Team UK to partner with multiple race winner Augusto Farfus. Two-time CART champion and double amputee Alex Zanardi, who was racing for BMW Team Italy-Spain, is moving to the Superstars Series. (Touring car fans should also note that SEAT’s 2008 champion Yvan Muller is moving to Chevrolet to replace the retiring former F1 driver Nicola Larini.)

What remains to be seen is whether BMW will continue cutting its racing activities in other series as well, or if they’ll have cut enough expenditures from their F1 and WTCC programs to let its sportscar programs and Formula BMW survive the cutbacks.

  • Red camera issues on things other than the HD2?

From the images below, it’s clear that the HD2 isn’t alone when it comes to red tints on cameras.

Clearly, they all exhibit some kind of red tint, and on such a range of devices, manufacturers and even on a range of OS platforms, perhaps there’s something wrong with the camera chips themselves?

Have you got any other devices affected by the red camera issue?

  • Textminator Arcade Game the Latest Action Stand Up Video Game

    textminator.jpg

While it may seem that stand-up video games are practically a thing of the past, and there has not been a decent one since Dance Dance Revolution. Since home versions of the game along with Guitar Hero/Rock Band have pretty much eclipsed stand-up video game glory, it’s nice to see someone trying to renew it with Textminator. As you can see, someone has even used the safety bars on the DDR game, but made the subject matter of the competition not dancing, but texting, something that the teens these days are really, really good at. So why not make an arcade game where players must “face-off” with each other on stainless steel phone-like keypads? It sort of reminds me of MasterType, a very old-school computer program that helped me learn to type. In that game, the player had to save a spaceship by typing in the correct sequence of letters to shoot the guns to destroy the aliens. I am assuming the player does a similar sort of game in Textminator. What makes this game unique is that not only can the high-scoring player enter in their initials, but the Textminator has a built-in camera so the player can snap a pic of themselves for a virtual wall of fame. So, let’s see how Textminator plays out in a modern video arcade. Perhaps it will spawn Textminator 2: Judgment Page.

  • Handbrake is a very handy DVD-ripping utility

Mac OS X is a wonder. When it comes to personal information management, entertainment and the Internet, it’s got all the basics covered. Beyond that, there are a handful of “essential” apps most Mac owners install on a new machine within minutes of booting it up for the first time. Handbrake is undoubtedly one of those essentials. And it just got a serious new upgrade.

Handbrake is a very handy (pun intended) DVD-ripping utility that converts DVDs to self-contained video files that can be played back on a computer or mobile device. (Contrary to the outright lies of major motion picture studios, there’s nothing wrong with having digital backups of movies you already own). In addition, DVDs can be converted into a number of formats, resolutions and aspect ratios. For many years, it has served as the single easiest way to get my movies off-of DVD discs and onto my iPods, iPhones and even my PSP.

The latest release, Handbrake 0.9.4, includes support for Snow Leopard, and is also available in 64-bit editions for both Leopard and Snow Leopard. It also adds the ability to include multiple subtitle tracks to exported video and a new “live preview” for viewing the likely outcome of an export before committing to a lengthy rip.

According to the release notes on the Handbrake website, the latest version includes new features like “macroblock tree rate control” and “weighted P-Frame prediction.” I’ve absolutely no idea what any of that means, and although they do provide links to explanatory articles, it made my head swim. I’ll just assume it’s all very swish and futuristic and good for my rips.

The introduction of a 64-bit version is good news for those of us using true 64-bit multi-core processors, though the performance increase is a fairly modest 10 percent. The software also supports non-DVD encoding, which is great news for those of us who do a lot of video editing. (I prefer to use Final Cut but often have to import raw data into iMovie only to export it out to a format Final Cut will accept. Handbrake won’t cut out this extra conversion step, but it performs far faster than the monolith that is iMovie and provides more flexibility in export formats.)

It’s not all about video, either. Handbrake offers great audio encoding options, including the newly-added ability to encode AAC using OS X’s Core Audio (which means far higher quality than was possible previously).

Handbrake is free. Although this means it has no official support, it does enjoy an active and enthusiastic user community so if you get stuck you won’t have far to go to find answers and help.

If you are using a 64 bit machine and want to get the full 64-bit goodness from Handbrake, you’ll need the 64-bit version of VLC Player, the latest nightly builds of which can be found here. (Please note that VLC Player 64-bit is beta software and as such offers no end-user support.) Handbrake 0.9.4 is available from the Handbrake handbrake.fr now.

  • Saab Purportedly Down But Not Out, The Saaga Continues

    57703574

Earlier this week, underperforming Swedish automaker Saab received a crushing blow when Koenigsegg abruptly killed its pending purchase from General Motors. Using Penske’s 86′d Saturn purchase as a yardstick, speculations immediately arose that with no buyer waiting in the wings Saab was next in line to get the axe. Today, however, promising rumors have begun to circulate that three separate entities have expressed interesting in buying Saab, indicating there may be hope for the company yet.

The first candidate is – surprise! – Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation, which purchased the design rights to the Saab 9-5 earlier this year thereby pledging to keep the infamous Saab alive albeit in sub-par Chinese deathtrap form. The remaining two bidders paint a significantly more promising picture for Saab and include two U.S.-based investment firms, Renco and Merbanco. Noticeably absent from the bidding frey is the Swedish government, who just months ago pledged their unwavering and slightly biased support of Saab’s break from GM by guaranteeing the $600 million loan necessary to complete Koenigsegg’s acquisition. Apparently, despite Sweden’s willingness to fork over a hefty lump of Krona to ensure a smooth transfer of ownership, the government has no intention of acquiring the brand for itself.

Despite the abandonment from both their fellow Swedish manufacturer and their native legislature, Saab spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs assured that company remains optimistic. “We have a close dialogue and close contact with several who have expressed interest in buying Saab Automobile,” Gustavs said. “It is not so surprising, given that there were 27 parties who were interested (when Saab was initially put up for sale) and 10 who came and looked the company over in April and May.”

GM executives are scheduled to convene next week to decide on the future of the brand, and smart money suggests Ake Svensson should start brushing up on his Mandarin.
