  • Sestak Reiterates White House Job Offer Claim, Issa To File Ethics Complaint

Sestak reiterates White House job offer claim, Issa to file ethics complaintRepresentative Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the top ranking Republican on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, says he will file an ethics complaint against Representative Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) if he doesn’t provide details about an alleged illegal job offer from the White House.

Sestak, who recently defeated Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) in the Democratic primary, said in February that the Obama administration offered him a high-ranking cabinet position if he dropped out of the race.

During an interview May 23 on NBC’s Meet the Press, Sestak reiterated his claim, but refused to provide specifics regarding the allegation.

"I was offered the job," he said. "Anything that goes beyond that is for others to talk about."

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said during a separate interview on Meet the Press that the administration’s lawyers had looked into the claim, and found that "nothing inappropriate" happened.

"It is unacceptable for an administration that touts itself as the ‘most transparent’ in history to continue to stonewall a significant and potentially devastating accusation of political corruption," responded Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

Issa said that he will file a formal complaint with the House Ethics Committee if an investigation into Sestak’s allegation is not launched, Politico.com reports.

"Either he’s lying, or covering up felonies for political purposes," said Issa.

  • Conservative And Veterans’ Organizations Vow To Keep ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ In Place

Conservative and veterans' organizations vow to keep 'don't ask, don't tell' in placeDefense Secretary Robert Gates gave his approval on the vote to overturn the "don’t ask, don’t tell policy" earlier this week. However, many media outlets stressed the apparent "lukewarm" nature of the endorsement, which may be unsurprising given the significant opposition to the measure, especially in conservative quarters.

The Family Research Council (FRC) has been at the forefront of trying to prevent the overhaul of the agreement that bans openly gay individuals from serving in the military. The organization’s lobbying arm called FRC Action recently launched an ad campaign accusing Democrats of attempting to use the military to "advance their radical social agenda."

"We call on Congress to protect the military, listen to our troops and the American people by rejecting this outrageous deal that politicizes the military at the expense of our national security," said FRC president Tony Perkins.

The FRC was seconded by the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization, The American Legion, which affirmed its opposition to repealing the law on the grounds that it served the military well for 17 years and that it would not be wise to make a major cultural change in the middle of two wars.

The legion’s National Commander Clarence E. Hill also pointed out that the Department of Defense has ordered a study on the policy, and the vote should not take place before the commission releases its findings.ADNFCR-1961-ID-19802022-ADNFCR

  • McCain To Vote Against Military Gay Ban Repeal

McCain to vote against military gay ban repealFaced with a growing challenge from a right-wing rival for the Arizona Republican nomination, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) is taking an increasingly intransigent stance on the Democrats’ efforts to repeal the "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy.

McCain, who at one point declared himself ready to see the policy repealed, has now indicated he will vote against the measure.

The former presidential candidate, who is also the top Republican on the Senate Armed Forces Committee, told Arizona’s KBLU radio that the Democrats "[are] going to try to jam [the overhaul] through without even trying to figure out what the impact on battle effectiveness would be," quoted by TheHill.com.

McCain was also interviewed by Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins on Washington Watch Weekly, the organization’s syndicated half-hour radio show, where he said "that this issue has significant long-term implication for our ability to defend this nation."

He also said he was afraid that the repeal was a done deal "because of no other reason than President Obama’s campaign promise."

The Republican primary in Arizona is scheduled for Aug. 24, and McCain appears to be losing ground to a more conservative opponent. ADNFCR-1961-ID-19802084-ADNFCR

  • Reducing Soft Drink Consumption Can Help Lower Blood Pressure

Reducing soft drink consumption can help lower blood pressure Individuals who are looking to lower their blood pressure without taking medication may be able to do so by moderately reducing their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, according to a new study.

For the 18-month study, a research team from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center recruited 810 adults with early stage hypertension who drank an average of 11 ounces of sugary beverages each day, well below the American average of 23 daily ounces.

At the end of the study, participants who reduced their soft drink intake by at least half lowered their systolic blood pressure by an average of 1.8 points and their diastolic blood pressure by 1.1 points.

"We found a direct dose-response relationship," said study leader Liwei Chen."Individually, it was not a big reduction. But population-wise, reducing total consumption could have a huge impact."

According to background information included in the report, a three-point reduction in blood pressure can lower heart disease mortality risk by as much as five percent.

The correlation between lower blood pressure and reduced soft drink intake remained after accounting for weight loss and other risk factors.

  • Motorola Shadow Caught Blazing Through Benchmark Test?

Phandroid is reporting a bit of interesting news tonight.  Apparently a member of Howards Forums who tried to benchmark his overclocked droid using the Quadrant app (which lists the top bench-marked handsets) saw sitting just below a Nexus One running Android 2.2 a device listed as the Shadow MB810. That’s right folks, it appears to be the Motorola Shadow (although obviously nothing can be confirmed).

What does the benchmark results tell us? Well, put simply, the phone listed(which may or may not be the Motorola Shadow) is very very fast. Blazing fast!

So, whose ready for the Motorola Shadow? I really hope this possibly benchmark test proves true.

  • Lindsay Lohan as Linda Lovelace: Movie Posters Revealed

The singer and actress, Lindsay Lohan will be playing as Linda Lovelace in her upcoming film, Linda Lovelace: Inferno.

The controversial actress is making the headlines again because of the release of her movie posters. The movie poster shows Lohan as a brunette porn star to which the pictures were taken by the celebrity’s photographer, Tyler Shields. He told PEOPLE, “Lindsay is amazing to work with. We have done it a few times and each time it gets better!” Shields took the photos a few days before Lohan attended the Cannes festival. Radar Online also caught Shields discussing about the shots. “We did the shoot at a low-rent motel in the Valley so that the mood was just right. Lindsay was on fire for that shoot and the results speak for themselves–she was really on her ‘A’ game. She spent a lot of time researching by watching Lovelace movies and looking at photographs too,” said Shields. He further added, “Lindsay was determined to get the poses just right and everybody was delighted with the results –I’m sure when filming starts she will do a great job.” Lindsay must be dedicated to the success of this film. As what the photographer said about her attitude towards the photo shoot, she shows compassion about her role. But who is Linda Lovelace?

Linda Lovelace, whose real name was Linda Susan Boreman, was an American porn star who became famous because of her performance of deep throat fellatio in the hard core film Deep throat. However, she denounced her pornography career and said that she was just forced by her sadistic husband to be in the film. She died because of a car accident last 2002.

  • Alicia Keys Pregnant — And Engaged!

A Shotgun Wedding: How charming! This should last at least 18 months….

Alicia Keys — Grammy-winning songbird and alleged homewrecker — is expecting her first child with fiance Swizz Beats, a newly-divorced anteater DJ and producer who reportedly began dating the “Un-Thinkable” star while his relationship with his now ex-wife, R&B singer Mashonda, was still ongoing.

“Un-Thinkable” indeed! Got yourself a winner there, honey….

Mashonda claims Swizz admitted that he was having an affair with Alicia back in 2008, after she stumbled across credit card statements and other documentation from their trysts in various hotels across the country.

The couple went public with their romance at the Gotham Magazine Gala in March, much to the chagrin of Swizz’s ex.

Although reps for the pair have refused to comment, a friend of the “very happy” lovebirds has divulged that Swizz and Alicia will be married in a private ceremony later this year, Entertainment Tonight reports.

In addition to Alicia, Swizz (whose real name is Kasseem Dean), 31, has produced music for Jay-Z, T.I., Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani. He has one son with Mashonda — Kasseem Jr., 3 — and an older child from a prior romance. There are also reports that the Abe Lincoln doppleganger has two other children, one who lives in Russia, conceived with former groupies — but you didn’t hear that from me.

At least one person won’t be breaking out any bubbly for the expectant parents. You guessed it; Mashonda. The bitter songbird is dragging the soon-to-be Mr. Keys back into court for later this month for failing to fork over more than $300,000 in maintenance payments.

Whatever happened to all those rumors accusing Alicia of being a lesbian?

  • ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal Is Now in the Defense Bill

After the provision won a major vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this evening, the House voted tonight to include an amendment overturning the military’s 17-year-old ban on open gay service into the fiscal 2011 defense authorization bill. The vote was 234 in favor to 194 opposed, with only five Republicans voting in favor and 26 Democrats voting against.

“Lawmakers today stood on the right side of history,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese in a prepared statement emailed to reporters as soon as the bill cleared the 216-vote threshold necessary for passage. “This is a historic step to strengthen our armed forces and to restore honor and integrity to those who serve our country so selflessly.”

The move followed impassioned speeches in favor of repeal by Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), all of whom argued that repeal was a crucial moral test for America.

This means that both the House and Senate now have a defense authorization bill that repeals “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The House may vote on the bill as early as tonight.

  • Hands-on HDMI out with the Sprint EVO

No retail stores are stocking the micro HDMI cable needed for the Sprint EVO just yet, but one of our visitors pointed out anyone can order one online (Thanks Cary). Arrow Electronics is selling the correct cable for under $10 and I overnighted one to test it out. If you feel like grabbing your own, they have about 125 left in stock and my order processing went very smooth. If those happen to sell out, I’m sure our Android accessories store will stock them soon.

Getting the HDMI out working was fairly simple as it’s just plug and play. After the micro HDMI cable is connected to the phone and TV, there will be a HDMI icon in the notification bar to let you know everything is working.

I can think of all kinds of cool uses for sending video from my Android phone to a TV, but it appears the functionality is limited to the Gallery app right now. Users can playback pictures and video that they captured on the phone and that’s about it. I’ve been told Sprint is blocking the other apps from displaying video due to DRM issues.

Hopefully the HDMI out features will be expanded in a future software update. If someone discovers a hack to make more apps work, please let me know and I’ll share with the group.

  • Really??? Qik video chat on the Sprint EVO will cost $5 per month

So you just picked up your new Sprint EVO 4G with front-facing camera and you are ready to make your first video call. What are your choices when it comes to video chat applications? Users could download the new Fring and start video chatting for free OR they could opt for Qik and start paying $5 per month.

Yup, you read that correct. Mobile video chat with Qik will be a “premium service” with a $4.99 monthly recurring charge (via PayPal). This fee will be in addition to the mandatory $10 Android tax that Sprint is tacking on to all EVO calling plans.

The Qik application is prominently featured on the front of the EVO box and it comes preinstalled, so I’m sure they will get a few sign-ups. However, I wonder how long those customers will keep paying once they learn they can get the same functionality for absolutely nothing.
