Apple\u2019s App Store saw a a sharp spike in downloads during the month of December, according to results of a study conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.flurry.com\/\">Flurry Media<\/a>, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics company. In 2008, when Apple\u2019s App Store saw similar spikes during the holiday season, the company later <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/pr\/library\/2009\/01\/21results.html\">reported strong sales<\/a> of its two flagship products, the iPhone and iPod touch.<\/p>\n<p>The iPod touch, in particular, seems to be enjoying strong sales this year. According to Amazon.com, the 8GB version of the iPhone <a href=\"http:\/\/phx.corporate-ir.net\/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1369429&amp;highlight=\">was one of the best-selling devices<\/a> during the 2009 holiday season and &#8220;Amazon customers bought enough 8GB iPod touches to play 442 years of continuous music.\u201d Flurry\u2019s data offers more anecdotal information about the<em> hotness<\/em> of the iPod touch.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>App downloads on the iPod touch soared past the iPhone for the first time.<\/li>\n<li>iPod touch 3G downloads increased by more than 900 percent on Christmas Day vs. the average of all previous Fridays in December.<\/li>\n<li>Total iPod touch downloads (all generations) jumped by over 1,000 percent on Christmas Day.<\/li>\n<li>iTunes gift card giving may have driven downloads to older-generation iPod touch devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The strong sales of the iPod touch reaffirm my longstanding belief that <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/12\/06\/all-hail-the-ipod-touch\/\">it&#8217;s a critical weapon<\/a> in Apple\u2019s battle against its smartphone rivals including Google.
