Defending her former boss, Matalin charged that President Bush had in fact &#8220;inherited a recession&#8221; and the September 11th attacks from [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>On CNN today, GOP strategist and former Dick Cheney adviser Mary Matalin argued that President Obama is speaking too much about the severe debt, deficits, and economic recession he inherited from the previous administration. Defending her former boss, Matalin charged that President Bush had in fact &#8220;inherited a recession&#8221; and the September 11th attacks from President Clinton:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>MATALIN: <strong>I was there, we inherited a recession from President Clinton and we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation&#8217;s history.<\/strong> And President Bush dealt with it and within a year of his presidency within a comparable time, unemployment was at 5 percent. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Watch it:<\/p>\n<p><center><object width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/xR93iKtFlcQ&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/xR93iKtFlcQ&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><\/embed><\/object><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In reality, the terror attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center occurred on Sept. 11, 2001 \u2014 eight months into President Bush\u2019s first term. Also, the <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/03\/10\/matalin-bush-recession\/\">2001 recession<\/a> technically began in <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/research\/200405010002\">March of 2001<\/a>, well after Bush assumed office. Last month, former Bush administration spokesperson Dana Perino claimed that &#8220;<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/11\/25\/perino-terror-attack-bush\/\">we did not have a terrorist attack<\/a> on our country during President Bush&#8217;s term.&#8221; Former Bush administration officials seem intent on misrepresenting history to pretend that the country never suffered its worst terror attack in history under Bush&#8217;s watch. It&#8217;s a peculiar talking point, even considering the other <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/03\/16\/bush-bio-iraq\/\">efforts<\/a> to <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/10\/15\/rove-afghanistan-troops\/\">whitewash<\/a> Bush&#8217;s disastrous <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/pr.thinkprogress.org\/2008\/02\/pr20080227\/\">record<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/27\/palins-metaphor-excuse\/\" >Palin rehashes ?metaphor? excuse to dodge accountability for the Lie of the Year. \t\t<\/a><br \/>Sarah Palin must be running out of excuses for her gaffes. As ThinkProgress noted earlier this week, the former governor was forced to address her &#8220;death panel&#8221; lie in the wake of PolitiFact&#8217;s designation of her claim as &#8220;Lie of the Year.&#8221; In an attempt to spin the lie, Palin is now calling the &#8220;death [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/palinballb.jpg\" title=\"Palin Baseball\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"144\" height=\"189\" \/>Sarah Palin must be running out of excuses for her gaffes. As ThinkProgress <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/23\/death-panels-imab\/\">noted earlier this week<\/a>, the former governor was forced to address her &#8220;death panel&#8221; lie in the wake of PolitiFact&#8217;s designation of her claim as &#8220;<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/article\/2009\/dec\/18\/politifact-lie-year-death-panels\/\">Lie of the Year<\/a>.&#8221; In an attempt to spin the lie, Palin is now calling the &#8220;death panel&#8221; claim a &#8220;<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/note.php?note_id=213042303434\">metaphor<\/a>&#8220;: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Though Nancy Pelosi and friends have tried to call \u201cdeath panels\u201d the \u201clie of the year,\u201d this type of rationing \u2013 what the CBO calls \u201creduc[ed] access to care\u201d and \u201cdiminish[ed] quality of care\u201d \u2013 is <strong>precisely what I meant when I used that metaphor.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This should sound familiar to those who have been closely following Palin&#8217;s year-and-a-half in the spotlight. After Palin made the jaw-dropping claim that Alaska&#8217;s proximity to Russia counts as foreign policy experience, the McCain-Palin campaign used the &#8220;metaphor&#8221; excuse to <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2008\/09\/22\/palin-russia-metaphorical\/\">defend the then-Governor<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A senior campaign aide who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity admitted that Palin\u2019s knowledge of Russia may be limited to the way someone from Miami might obtain a general feel for Latin America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is very much being able to look off the tip of Alaska,\u201d the aide said. \u201cMetaphorically, I\u2019m talking about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite how metaphorical, allegorical, or analytical people attempt to make Palin sound, the truth is that her <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/07\/asians-palin\/\">limitless<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/11\/28\/palin-turkey-trot-quit\/\">string<\/a> of <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/04\/palin-birthers-conspiracies\/\">gaffes<\/a> and <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/18\/palin-hospital-backlash\/\">missteps<\/a> are simply nonsensical.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Matalin claims President Bush ?inherited? the September 11th terror attacks.
