{"id":113075,"date":"2009-12-29T23:49:46","date_gmt":"2009-12-30T04:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/?p=137415"},"modified":"2009-12-29T23:49:46","modified_gmt":"2009-12-30T04:49:46","slug":"ginkgo-biloba-maybe-not-so-effective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/113075","title":{"rendered":"Ginkgo Biloba Maybe Not So Effective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large, long-term study funded by the National Institutes of Health revealed that the popular supplement <a href=\"http:\/\/nccam.nih.gov\/health\/ginkgo\/\">ginkgo biloba<\/a> doesn&#8217;t prevent cognitive decline or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/articles\/apple-juice-good-for-the-mind-115\/\">improve memory<\/a> in seniors. The findings of this largest ever randomized controlled trial on ginkgo bilbo were published today in JAMA.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it appropriate to include fallen ginkgo leaves to illustrate this post. I&#8217;ve always been fond of the tree, even if its leaves don&#8217;t do everything we&#8217;d like them to. (Yellow ginkgo leaves remind me of potato chips!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-137417\" src=\"http:\/\/images1.blisstree.com\/files\/2009\/12\/ginkgo-leaves.jpg\" alt=\"ginkgo-leaves\" width=\"500\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>ginkgo biloba study<\/strong> involved 3,000 people ages 72 to 96 who were followed for seven years. The authors write, &#8220;In sum, we find no evidence that G biloba slows the rate of cognitive decline in older adults.&#8221; They add that these findings are consistent with those of smaller studies. Read more about the study at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/health\/2009-12-30-ginkgo30_ST_N.htm\"><em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re taking the supplement to prevent memory decline, you may need to save your cash instead. Some people take gingko for other reasons, including treating multiple sclerosis and tinnitus.<\/p>\n<p>On their website, the National Institutes of Health states that <strong>side effects of ginkgo biloba<\/strong> can include headache, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, dizziness, or allergic skin reactions. If you&#8217;re taking ginkgo or another alternative medicine, you should always tell your doctor and dentist. Gingko may increase bleeding risk.<\/p>\n<p>Other names for the ginkgo tree include maidenhair tree and Japanese silver apricot. No matter what you call it, the ginkgo is still a beautiful tree.
