Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Senator Joeseph Lieberman (I-CT), who
\nleads the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee,
\nhas a vision of \u201ctomorrow\u2019s war.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody in our government said to me in Sana\u2019a, the
\ncapital of Yemen, Iraq was yesterday\u2019s war,\u201d Lieberman
\nexplained. \u201cAfghanistan is today\u2019s war. If we don\u2019t
\nact preemptively, Yemen will be tomorrow\u2019s war. That\u2019s the
\ndanger we face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA), also appearing on the program, seemed
\nto agree, calling an attack against Yemen \u201csomething we should
\nconsider.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaj. Nidal Malik Hasan \u2014 the Army officer who killed 13
\npeople in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in November \u2014 was
\nlinked to Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Muslim cleric now based in
\nYemen,\u201d The Hill noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unnamed administration officials told US media in the aftermath of
\nthe thwarted attack that their suspect had confessed to traveling to
\nYemen and receiving training by Al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n

Lieberman\u2019s saber rattling against Yemen is \u201clikely to
\nbe echoed in the days ahead as a growing number of neoconservative and
\nconservative foreign policy voices have used the attempted airline
\nattack to call into question the tactics Obama has applied to curb
\nterrorism,\u201d Sam Stein added<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a borderline-livid post, Firedoglake writer Spencer Ackerman assailed Lieberman\u2019s hawkish stance<\/a>.
\n\u201cIs it a mistake to respond to this with more than ridicule?
\nMaybe, but if not: it\u2019s a ludicrously blithe and cost-free
\nassertion to say that we need to take preemptive action in Yemen. What
\nthe fuck does Joe Lieberman know about Yemen? What does anyone in the
\nWashington policy community know about Yemen? Fucking nothing except
\nthat (a) there is an apparently growing al-Qaeda presence there;
\nAbdulmutallab told investigators that he got hooked up with his botched
\nexplosive there; the USS Cole was bombed there; there\u2019s an
\nimportant port there; and\u2026 that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news is that while progressives basically need Joe
\nLieberman\u2019s vote in the Senate to pass domestic legislation, thus
\ngiving him a ton of leverage over what happens, nobody needs to listen
\nto him about Yemen,\u201d blogger Matt Yglesias opined<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
