LAGOS \u2013 Nigeria\u2019s main rebel group has warned that the
\ncountry has become a \u201cthreat to world peace\u201d and a fertile
\nground for Islamic extremism following a Nigerian\u2019s botched
\nattempt to blow up a passenger jet over the United States.<\/p>\n

The group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta
\n(MEND), has been conducting a long-standing insurgency in
\nNigeria\u2019s oil-rich southern Niger Delta region.<\/p>\n

It said in a statement it \u201ccondemns the attempted act of
\nterrorism on Delta flight 253 into the United States by a misguided
\nIslamic extremist from the Northern part of Nigeria\u201d.<\/p>\n

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, the son of a prominent banker from
\nNorthern Nigeria, was charged on Saturday with trying to blow up a
\nNorthwest Airlines flight as it was coming into Detroit airport from
\nAmsterdam on Christmas Day. He had flown to Amsterdam from Lagos.<\/p>\n
