Obama \u2018giving his generals a little too much leeway\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congressman Dennis Kucinich says President Barack Obama ought to
\nfire the generals who publicly aired their views on the war in
\nAfghanistan during this fall\u2019s deliberations on a troop surge.<\/p>\n

The Ohio Democrat known for his anti-war views said there is
\n\u201cno question\u201d that the president was pressured by the
\nmilitary into approving a 30,000-troop surge.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of [Obama’s] generals made remarks publicly<\/a>,
\nwhich is unheard of,\u201d Kucinich told Russia Today. \u201cGenerals
\nare subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief. When generals start trying
\nto suggest publicly what the president should do, they shouldn\u2019t
\nbe generals anymore. That\u2019s the way it works. And frankly,
\nPresident Obama, who is a good man, has given his generals a little too
\nmuch leeway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kucinich also said that the Constitutional mechanism for declaring
\nand waging war, which gives authority over the issue to Congress, has
\nbeen eroded by successive presidencies that have not seen fit to ask
\nCongress for permission for military campaigns abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a series of presidents who have basically
\ntaken the initiative to go to war and hadn\u2019t really checked with
\nCongress,\u201d Kucinich said. \u201cRichard Nixon prolonged a war in
\nVietnam and he did so when many efforts were made by members of
\ncongress to cut off funds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kucinich has tabled a resolution<\/a> in Congress that calls for a vote on a withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
