At least four people were reported dead today after Iranian security
\nforces opened fire on opposition protesters who took to the streets in
\nTehran for a religious ceremony.<\/p>\n

The shootings took place as tens of thousands of demonstrators
\ngathered in the capital for the Shia Ashura ceremonies and to voice
\nanger at the government.<\/p>\n

The reformist website Rah-e Sabz reported that an elderly man was
\namong the dead after being shot in the forehead at a crossroads in
\nTehran city centre. Three others were said to have been shot nearby at
\nKalej bridge, in Enghelab Street. Rah-e Sabz, citing witnesses, said
\ncrowds held up the elderly man and started chanting slogans against
\nIran\u2019s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

Crowds prevented security forces from taking away those wounded in
\nthe shootings. According to other eyewitness reports, members of the
\nhardline Basij militia attacked demonstrators with daggers and knives.
\nDisturbances were also reported in Isfahan and Najafabad, where the
\nRah-e Sabz described the situation as \u201csevere\u201d.<\/p>\n
