Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian accused of
\ntrying to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253, defended the Taliban
\nin classroom discussions, his high school teacher has said.<\/p>\n

Abdulmutallab, now 23, believed the Taliban were
\n\u201cright and proper\u201d to blow up the Bamiyan statues of Buddha
\nin March 2001, said history teacher Mike Rimmer.<\/p>\n

The terrorist suspect, accused of trying to detonate a bomb on board
\nthe Airbus A330 as it came in to land at Detroit airport on Christmas
\nDay, also defended their crackdown on harmless activities such as kite
\nflying.<\/p>\n

At the time Mr Rimmer, a Briton who taught teenage Abdulmutallab at
\nthe British School of Lom\u00e9 in Togo, west Africa, did not think
\nsuch talk truly indicated extremist views.<\/p>\n

Mr Rimmer described the Nigerian as a \u201cmodel pupil\u201d who was interested in world affairs.<\/p>\n
