US Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who is circulating a
\nresolution to end the war in Afghanistan, says he is simply trying to
\nreclaim the forgotten constitutional responsibility of Congress to
\nstart and end war.<\/p>\n

Kucinich reminds the basic principles that \u201cIt is
\nnot appropriate for generals to be making decisions on their own about
\nwhether the United States goes into battle. They do not have the final
\njudgment, not in a democracy. In a democracy this final judgment has to
\ngo to the elected officials.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kucinich says more defense spending may lead to the collapse of the US economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can understand that [Afghan President] Karzai wants the US
\nto be there pumping a $100 billion year after year. I don\u2019t know
\nwhere he thinks we are going to get the money from,\u201d questions
\nthe Congressman. \u201cBecause we have over 15 million people
\nunemployed, 10 to 12 million will lose their homes in the next year, 47
\nmillion Americans go to bed hungry every night and don\u2019t have any
\nhealthcare, millions of Americans have lost their investments, their
\npensions, their retirement security. We have those to take care here at
\nhome. And we cannot continue to spend money on these foreign
\nadventures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kucinich says you don\u2019t need to be a general or a politician
\nto understand that the strategy to buy off the opposition in
\nAfghanistan is perverse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot buy friends, everyone knows this\u2026 The
\nfriends who you try to buy are the least reliable of your friends. The
\nfriends we try to buy in Afghanistan are with us one day, and the next
\nday they are shooting at us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWar is a drain on the economy because war is capital
\nintensive,\u201d goes on Kucinich. \u201cWar spends money on high
\ntechnology, which costs a lot of money. War is capital intensive, not
\nlabour intensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He points out that \u201cwar is not a way to create jobs \u2013 it\u2019s a way to kill jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEach soldier costs on average about a million dollars a year.
\nFor $1 million a year you could create 25 jobs that would pay $35,000 a
\nyear. So the ratio is at least 25:1, jobs in the civilian sector as
\noppose to the military sector with spending a million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kucinich says American government wants now to put the bill for unemployment benefits into a bill to fund the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they are telling the American people is this: If you
\nagree to put your sons and daughters on the firing line, then we will
\npay you for standing on the unemployment line. They have tied the two
\ntogether. It is grossly immoral.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they are saying is that war is a part of our permanent
\neconomy and a war-based economy is eventually going to collapse,\u201d
\nKucinich warns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
