Although the ape will be looked after by a robot on the mission, the
\ndecision is expected to spark controversy with animal rights groups.<\/p>\n

The Russians first succeeded in putting monkeys into orbit in 1983.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have plans to return to space,\u201d said Zurab Mikvabia,
\ndirector of the Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy in
\nGeorgia which supplied apes for the programme in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

The Institute is in preliminary talks with Russia\u2019s
\nCosmonautics Academy about preparing monkeys for a simulated Mars
\nmission that could lay the groundwork for sending an ape to the Red
\nPlanet, he said.<\/p>\n
