The US military prison in Guantanamo Bay may stay open
\nfor another year despite President Barack Obama\u2019s pledge to close
\nthe infamous detention center by 2010.<\/p>\n

Recent calculations show that the US administration\u2019s
\ntimetable to close down Guantanamo by January 2010 has to be revisited
\nover legal and financial issues surrounding the relocation of camp, The
\nAssociated Press reported.<\/p>\n

Opponents to Obama\u2019s plan to buy and upgrade a prison in the
\nState of Illinois to a super-max security status have vowed to
\nchallenge the president\u2019s intended funding for the penitentiary
\nand delay passage of laws meant to facilitate detention and prosecution
\nof \u2018terrorism\u2019 suspects who face no charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there will be bipartisan opposition\u201d to
\nbringing Guantanamo inmates to Thomson prison around 220 kilometers
\nwest of Chicago, said Donald Stewart who represents Republican leader
\nin the Senate, Mitch McConnell.<\/p>\n

US lawmakers also seem adamant to change laws ruling out detention of onshore captives who do not face prosecution.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the scheduled purchase of the rural prison in Illinois
\nmay be postponed until March and will require around 10 months of
\nrenovations, officials say.<\/p>\n
