Armed police are to routinely carry SAS assault rifles over fears of running gun battles in the streets with terrorists.<\/p>\n

Nearly 250 extra Scotland Yard marksmen have been trained on the
\nhigh velocity Heckler & Koch G36 giving a massive increase in
\nfirepower.<\/p>\n

The 5.56mm calibre gun will be issued to all Armed Response
\nVehicles, after security chiefs warned there will not be time to
\nscramble the SAS in a Mumbai-style assault on London.<\/p>\n

Instead, Met marksmen, who patrol 24 hours a day, will be sent on
\nwhat is \u201ceffectively a search and destroy mission\u201d.
\nResearch on the Indian attacks last December, where Islamists with
\nAK-47s killed 166 civilians, showed most victims in hotels died within
\n30 minutes of capture.<\/p>\n

And police now believe it may be safer to storm a building immediately.<\/p>\n
