The explosion of what witnesses describe as a firecracker on
\nNorthwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas
\narrives at an opportune time for the Obama administration. The alleged
\nperpetrator, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, like shoe bomber Richard Reid
\nbefore him, appears to be an incompetent patsy. Mutallab told
\ninvestigators he was on a mission from al-Qaeda and he got the
\nexplosive materials for the botched attack in Yemen.<\/p>\n

Yemen is a new front in the war against the manufactured enemy al-Qaeda. Not only is the United States providing assisstance<\/a>
\nto the Yemeni government to bomb supposed al-Qaeda bases in the
\nsouthern part of the country, but Saudi Arabia conducted airstrikes
\nagainst targets in the north. Mohamed al-Anisi, the Yemeni national
\nsecurity chief, told told the Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz that his
\nforces were cooperating with Washington on attacks and accused Iran of
\naiding Houthi Shiite rebels. Earlier this week, a Saudi Ministry of
\nDefense official said 73 Saudis were killed fighting the Houthi rebels,
\naccording to Deutsche Presse-Agentur<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week al-Qaeda exploited an anti-government rally in
\nSanna. \u201cAl Qaeda militants made a rare public appearance in
\nrestive south Yemen on Monday, telling an anti-government rally that
\nthe group\u2019s war was with the United States and not the Yemeni
\narmy, residents said,\u201d Reuters<\/a>
\nreported on December 23. \u201cThe West and Saudi Arabia fear al Qaeda
\nwill take advantage of the Yemeni government\u2019s focus on a
\nShi\u2019ite rebellion in the north and rising secessionist sentiment
\nin the south to spread its operations to the kingdom, the world\u2019s
\ntop oil exporter.\u201d An explosion during the demonstration killed
\nthree people.<\/p>\n

The failed bombing of Flight 253 provides an excuse to expand the
\nGWOT into Africa. \u201cThe alleged bomber\u2019s nationality and his
\napparent origination in Nigeria raised immediate questions about
\nairport security in Africa\u2019s most populous country, where
\ncorruption, organized crime and crumbling infrastructure have long
\nhobbled an otherwise oil-rich government,\u201d reports The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.
\n\u201cThe alleged attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound jet by a
\nNigerian national Friday raises new concern over possible extremist
\nIslamic activity in Nigeria and West Africa, a corner of Africa where
\nal Qaeda so far hasn\u2019t put down significant roots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethiopian and U.S. intervention in Somalia was justified to the
\ninternational public under the pretext of fighting terrorism and
\nal-Qaeda. \u201cEthiopia has become a regional surrogate or proxy for
\nthe United States and Britain. This is evident from the coordination of
\nthe U.S. military and Ethiopian troops in Somalia,\u201d Global Research<\/a> noted in January, 2007.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s renewed interest in the Horn of Africa dates
\nto November 2002 when the US military established its joint taskforce
\nin Djibouti, now the base for 1,800 troops, including special
\noperations forces,\u201d The Guardian<\/a>
\nreported on January 13, 2007. \u201cBy then, the west had good reason
\nto fear that Africa had become an arena for al-Qaida, and that the
\nfailed state of Somalia could become a haven for the
\norganization\u2019s operatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethiopia invaded Somalia with US encouragement and military
\nassistance after the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), an Islamist militant
\ngroup that ruled much of the country, made military advances. On
\nJanuary 5, 2007, al-Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri \u2014
\nthe notorious CIA operative<\/a> in Afghanistan who was shepherded by the western intelligence asset the Muslim Brotherhood<\/a> \u2014 issued a message urging Somalis to fight against the Ethiopian invaders.<\/p>\n

The ICU is a classic intelligence fabrication. It was armed by none
\nother than Victor Bout, described as the world\u2019s biggest illegal
\narms dealer. Bout worked with CIA front companies in Afghanistan. He
\nalso worked with the United Nations and African warlords, according to
\ninvestigative journalist  <\/span>Wayne Madsen<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnified Quest 2008\u2033 underscores the importance of
\nAfrica in the bogus (and highly profitable) GWOT. The May 2008 United
\nStates Army War College war game included representatives from several
\nNATO countries, Australia, and Israel, along with the private military
\ncontractors the Rand Corporation and Booz-Allen. Among scenarios
\nexamined during the game were the possibility of direct American
\nmilitary intervention involving some 20,000 U.S. troops in order to
\n\u201csecure the oil,\u201d and the question of how to handle
\npossible splits between factions within the Nigerian government. The
\ngame ended without military intervention because one of the rival
\nfactions executed a successful coup and formed a new government that
\nsought stability, reported the Stop NATO<\/a> newsgroup.<\/p>\n

Obama has defined the Africom mission to be within in the parameters
\nof U.S. national security and the larger globalist agenda.
\n\u201cAmerica has a responsibility to advance this vision, not just
\nwith words, but with support that strengthens African capacity. When
\nthere is genocide in Darfur or terrorists in Somalia, these are not
\nsimply African problems \u2014 they are global security challenges,
\nand they demand a global response,\u201d he said during a speech<\/a>
\ndelivered on July 11, 2009. \u201cOur Africa Command is focused not on
\nestablishing a foothold in the continent, but on confronting these
\ncommon challenges to advance the security of America, Africa and the
\nworld.\u201d<\/p>\n

Africa Command was established October 1, 2007 as a temporary
\nsub-unified command under U.S. European Command, which for more than
\ntwo decades was responsible for U.S. military relations with more than
\n40 African nations. Africa Command was formally activated October 1,
\n2008, during a public ceremony at the Pentagon attended by
\nrepresentatives of African nations posted in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

In addition to paving the way for expanded incursion in Africa, the
\nfailed bombing provides an excuse to further harass an impose police
\nstate measures on airline passengers. \u201cPresident Barack Obama,
\nvacationing in Hawaii, ordered heightened security, calling for
\n\u2018all appropriate measures to be taken\u2019 after receiving a
\nbriefing from national security officials, a White House statement
\nsaid,\u201d reports Bloomberg<\/a>. Obama considers yesterday\u2019s incident as an attempted terrorist attack.<\/p>\n

Airport security was increased around the world today. \u201cThe
\nDepartment of Homeland Security said passengers may notice additional
\nscreening. Security at airports in the U.K., continental Europe,
\nCanada, parts of Asia and Australia was increased today, and a European
\nCommission statement said the authorities are in contact with Dutch and
\nU.S. officials,\u201d BusinessWeek<\/a> reports this morning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
