A suspected terrorist\u2019s attempt to blow up a U.S.
\nairliner may override privacy concerns and intensify a push for
\nfull-body scanning equipment at airports.<\/p>\n

U.S. officials charged a 23-year-old Nigerian man with trying to
\nblow up Northwest Flight 253 as it prepared to land in Detroit on
\nChristmas Day. President Barack Obama said yesterday he ordered a
\nthorough review of the episode and called for new scrutiny of screening
\npolicies and technologies.<\/p>\n

Metal detectors currently used to screen passengers wouldn\u2019t
\nhave found the explosive allegedly carried aboard by the suspect, said
\nformer Federal Aviation Administration security chief Billie Vincent.
\nOnly more sophisticated devices such as low-level X-rays and
\nmillimeter-wave technology would work, Vincent said.<\/p>\n

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, called for more
\nwidespread use of the full-body scanners after the aborted attack.
\n\u201cWe were very lucky this time but we may not be so lucky next
\ntime, which is why our defenses must be strengthened,\u201d Lieberman,
\nchairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
\nCommittee, said in a statement yesterday.<\/p>\n
