All the signs are that the Obama administration is cranking up its secret war against al-Qaida in Yemen.<\/p>\n

The acknowledgement of increasing intelligence
\ncooperation with the beleaguered Sanaa regime, which resulted in a
\nstring of attacks on the jihadists\u2019 bases in which some 50-60
\noperatives were reported killed or captured over the last two weeks, is
\na strong indication that the Americans are showing a new determination
\nto eliminate the militants who call themselves al-Qaida in the Arabian
\nPeninsula.<\/p>\n

A report carried by The New York Times Monday that the United States
\nhas opened a \u201clargely covert front\u201d against al-Qaida in
\nYemen underlines how Washington perceives the organization to be a
\nserious threat not only to the Sanaa government, battered by a plethora
\nof crises, but to the West, and the United States in particular.<\/p>\n

The bizarre \u2014 and still largely unexplained \u2014 attempt by
\na Nigerian engineering student, son of his country\u2019s leading
\nbanker, to blow up a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight from
\nAmsterdam on Christmas Day has added to U.S. unease about
\nal-Qaeda\u2019s swelling resurgence in Yemen, ancestral homeland of
\nOsama bin Laden.<\/p>\n
