Watts Up With That?<\/a>

Richard North from the EU Referendum writes of a curious juxtaposition of forecasts<\/a>, then and now. I thought it worth sharing here since it highlights the chutzpah<\/em>
\nwith which CRU botched their forecast in March of 2000. At least they
\ndidn\u2019t claim that UK snowfall was in a \u201cdeath spiral\u201d.<\/p>\n

From The Independent<\/em><\/a>
\non 20 March 2000 we got the headline: \u201cSnowfalls are now just a
\nthing of the past\u201d. According to Dr David Viner, a senior
\nresearch scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the
\nUniversity of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will
\nbecome \u201ca very rare and exciting event\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"CRU\u2019s<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

Then, from the Telegraph<\/em> online<\/a> today we get: \u201cSnow and ice to hit Britain at New Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The mercury is set to drop to 28\u00b0F (-3\u00b0C) in
\nmost of England and Wales on Thursday night, New Year\u2019s Eve, and
\n17\u00b0F (-8\u00b0C) in Scotland, with widespread snow showers also
\npredicted. New Year\u2019s Day will also be chilly, with the northern
\nhalf of Britain\u2019s struggling to get above freezing during the
\nday, while London will do well to reach 39\u00b0F (4\u00b0C)<\/p>\n

The forecast follows a spell of snow, sleet and ice which has
\ngripped Britain for more than a week but relented in most parts over
\nrecent days.<\/p>\n

It is so good to see in The Independent<\/em> that the CRU is living up to its justly acquired reputation for accuracy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ll also point out that this \u201cvery rare and exciting event\u201d happened in London last year also.<\/p>\n
