We should have known that the BBC would make some
\ndidactic use of its revival of the great horror story,
\n\u201cDay of the Triffids\u201d. But the public indoctrination
\nmessage seems to have got a bit confused.<\/p>\n

About half way through the first part (shown on BBC1 at primetime on
\nMonday night) we learned that the monstrous, flesh-eating giant
\nplants had, in this incarnation, been deliberately farmed for
\ntheir oil – a safe alternative fuel which, as the hero explained
\nwhile trying to extricate one his limbs from the grasp
\nof a rampaging triffid, had \u201csaved us from global
\nwarming\u201d.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know how this struck you but in my household it
\nproduced an explosion of hilarity and a chorus of, \u201cShould have
\ntaken your chances with the 2 degree temperature rise, mate.\u201d<\/p>\n

As I say, I am not at all sure what the real warning of this
\nsalutary tale was intended to be: in the final part, the man
\nresponsible for the Triffid Solution to Climate Change admits that the
\nhell he has unleashed on the world might not have been such a
\ngreat idea. With quite breathtaking understatement, he says,
\n \u201cThere are always unintended consequences to everything we
\ndo.\u201d I\u2019ll say: in this case, the near-extinction of the
\nhuman population.<\/p>\n

So was this designed to be yet another lesson in climate change
\nawareness: don\u2019t let things go so far that you have to turn to an
\narmy of man-eating herbs to save you? Or was it a warning against
\ntaking drastic measures against global warming which may have
\nunpredictable risks?<\/p>\n
