O\u2019Hare to get body scanners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Privacy advocates worry that new body-scanning security equipment
\ndue to come to O\u2019Hare Airport next year will interfere with
\npassengers\u2019 rights to keep their body images to themselves.<\/p>\n

But the former head of security for the Federal Aviation
\nAdministration believes the scanners, which see through clothing, are
\nlong overdue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should have had them in already,\u201d said Billie
\nVincent, now CEO and president of Aerospace Services International
\nInc., an electronics security company. He said the technology should be
\nused for secondary screening of passengers selected for extra
\ninspection. \u201cIt\u2019s a very necessary part of the system.
\nO\u2019Hare needs it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chicago Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino said Tuesday that
\nthe Transportation Security Agency plans to bring full-body scanners to
\nthe airport in the first half of the year \u2014 possibly by April.
\nShe did not give details on how the scanners would be deployed.<\/p>\n

Ed Yohnka, director of communications for the American Civil
\nLiberties Union of Illinois, said it\u2019s puzzling that full-body
\nscanners are being seen as a solution, when officials had knowledge
\nabout Abdulmutallab that they didn\u2019t use.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause that intelligence was not acted upon, the best we can
\ndo is subject thousands and perhaps millions of Americans to a virtual
\nstrip search simply for getting on an airline flight?\u201d said
\nYohnka. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
