{"id":121203,"date":"2009-12-31T15:20:25","date_gmt":"2009-12-31T20:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/northwestvoices\/2010653078_honoringanotherfallenofficerkentmundell.html?syndication=rss"},"modified":"2009-12-31T15:20:25","modified_gmt":"2009-12-31T20:20:25","slug":"honoring-another-fallen-officer-kent-mundell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/121203","title":{"rendered":"Honoring another fallen officer &#8212; Kent Mundell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>People dying everyday in Afghanistan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Editor, The Times:<\/p>\n<p>The picture of Pierce County sheriff\u2019s deputy Kent Mundell\u2019s casket being led down the hallway is very sad [\u201cOfficers escort fallen deputy,\u201d page one, Dec. 30].<\/p>\n<p>But there are images like this quite often in Afghanistan, sometimes with six caskets.<\/p>\n<p>Rightfully, society here pays a great amount of respect to fallen police officers, usually with massive funerals, traffic disruptions, and lately with wall-to-wall television coverage.<\/p>\n<p>In the Afghan society, when one of our bombs kill an innocent civilian, they also have massive funerals. Why is the sorrow for our soldiers so low key in comparison? Why did our own government, until recently, bar pictures of soldiers caskets?<\/p>\n<p>I am reminded of the quote by Joseph Stalin, \u201cOne death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Ben McDonald, Seattle<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Department of Corrections needs to do its job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The facts and figures emanating from the Justice Department mandate that we have to get smart on crime, cut our prison populations, and reduce the unbelievable costs involved [\u201cWas weapons cache legal?,\u201d NWThursday, Dec. 24].<\/p>\n<p>Our schools and other social services need the money that is being wasted on life sentences for petty crimes and the nonproductive time people are spending behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t make any sense to have a Department of Corrections if there\u2019s no correction going on.<\/p>\n<p>The time behind bars should be spent on improvement.
