The big four clubs in England reclaimed their grasp on FA Cup silverware last season after losing it for the first time in over a decade following Portsmouth\u2019s surprise victory in 2008. Chelsea\u2019s 2-1 win over Everton came after falling a goal behind to the quickest goal in FA Cup final history. Louis Saha\u2019s strike after only 25 seconds rubbed Roberto Di Matteo\u2019s 1997 cup-winning goal for Chelsea from the record books but the Blues were too strong and Didier Drogba\u2019s header brought them level before Frank Lampard\u2019s stunning strike took the cup to Stamford Bridge.
\nThe FA Cup proposal was made by Charles Alcock, then FA Honorary Secretary. He proposed that there should be a competition among the Association\u2019s member clubs. His proposal was approved on October of 1871 and the FA Cup was born.<\/p>\n
The FA Cup started small. In its first season, only 15 clubs joined and the final match was attended by a mere 2000. Now, there are more than 600 competitors vying for a place in the tournament proper (so the qualifying rounds had to be instituted) and the number of people who watched the final match at Wembley Stadium in 1923 numbered 200,000!
