Let&#8217;s start January off by recapping the top stories from the past week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/apple\/news\/2009\/12\/att-dancing-around-mysterious-new-york-iphone-issue.ars\">AT&amp;T blocked customers in the New York area<\/a> from ordering an iPhone online, with AT&amp;T customer service reps saying that the network can&#8217;t &#8220;handle&#8221; the iPhone. AT&amp;T&#8217;s PR people, for their part, aren&#8217;t doing much to help explain the issue.<\/p>\n<p>A security researcher is in the process of building a table that will enable the <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/security\/news\/2009\/12\/one-leg-of-gsm-encryption-cracked-cell-industry-unimpressed.ars\">cracking of GSM encryption<\/a>, assuming that a parallel effort to crack its frequency hopping algorithm succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>E-readers will be one of the major stories of 2010, and the party gets started next week in Vegas at CES 2010. Here&#8217;s a<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/news\/2009\/12\/three-e-readers-at-ces-2010.ars\"> quick run-down of three products that will debut at CES<\/a> and that could make waves in the e-reader space next year.<\/p>\n<p>Two Ars staffers recently moved to new homes. Taking their broadband connections and e-mail with them turned out to be the <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/staff\/nate\/2009\/12\/dropped-dsl-and-missing-e-mail-two-tales-of-moving-woes.ars\">worst part of the relocation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The developers behind the XBMC project have <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/open-source\/reviews\/2009\/12\/xbmc-911-makes-your-open-source-home-theater-look-shinier.ars\">released a new version<\/a> of the popular open source media player. Fortunately, Weird Science comes equipped with hangover advice: stick to vodka.<\/p>\n<p>The California Science Center has been <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/news\/2009\/12\/science-center-sued-for-rejecting-antievolution-film.ars\">slapped with a lawsuit<\/a> by a group that hoped to show an anti-evolution film there.<\/p>\n<p>Google wins domain name disputes almost every time, and it <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/news\/2009\/12\/how-to-beat-google-in-a-domain-name-dispute.ars\">suffered its second loss ever<\/a> on Christmas Eve. How &#8220;Groovle.com&#8221; avoided a one-way transfer to the Googleplex.<\/p>\n<p>It may not push the genre forward in any strong directions, but <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/reviews\/2009\/12\/alien-breed-evolution-brings-back-classic-amiga-game.ars\"><i>Alien Breed Evolution<\/i><\/a> remakes a classic top-down experience and adds online co-op. The mechanics are solid, the pace is measured, and the graphics are strong.
