The Soloist (Fic Salzman) by Mark Salzman is also about a musician, a child prodigy on the cello who suddenly looses his gift at the age of 18. He is left trying to figure out what’s next and who he is if he is not a concert cellist. He learns a lot about himself when he becomes the only jurist unwilling to convict a young schizophrenic boy for murder. He gains insights when he agrees to teach another young boy who like himself has remarkable musical abiliities. But it is sitting on the ground in his good pants at a turnout in the road to the Wilson Observatory that he has an epiphany. Once he understands, he can move forward with his life.
