Yes, all caps. The description went on to say that the house had been &#8220;GREEN&#8221; for eight years. Since there was an open house today I decided to swing by to check it out. (No, that&#8217;s not it in the picture!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureatlas.com\/blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-137997\" src=\"http:\/\/images1.blisstree.com\/files\/2010\/01\/green-home.jpg\" alt=\"green-home\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The very friendly Realtor explained that the house was green because the previous owner hadn&#8217;t used harsh chemicals to clean it. She said they also used low-VOC paint and no chemicals on the lawn.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s nice, but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;d describe the house as green just because of the cleaners, paint and lawn. There are so many other things you need to consider.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy efficiency <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proper insulation in attic and walls<\/li>\n<li>Upgraded windows to avoid drafts (single-glazed windows should be replaced)<\/li>\n<li>Energy Star appliances and light fixtures<\/li>\n<li>Natural daylight<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/wp-admin\/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=137983&amp;message=1\">Tankless water heater<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Light-colored exterior for reflecting heat<\/li>\n<li>Trees for shade (particularly deciduous trees on the west side)<\/li>\n<li>Efficient furnace (Furnaces built before 1992 with a standing pilot may waste up to 35% of their fuel.)<\/li>\n<li>Radiant floor heat<\/li>\n<li>Solar power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Water friendly<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Low-flow toilets or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/articles\/three-easy-ways-to-save-water\/\">composting toilet<\/a><\/li>\n<li> Water-saving shower heads<\/li>\n<li> Landscaping that can withstand droughts<\/li>\n<li> Inspections for leaks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a Realtor is advertising a house as green, then ask for an <strong>energy audit<\/strong>.
