{"id":136863,"date":"2010-01-04T14:52:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T19:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chilean-mining-strike-threatens-global-copper-supply-2010-1"},"modified":"2010-01-04T14:52:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-04T19:52:00","slug":"copper-breaks-17-month-high-as-chilean-mining-strike-threatens-global-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/136863","title":{"rendered":"Copper Breaks 17-Month High As Chilean Mining Strike Threatens Global Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Copper prices are soaring after strikes in one of the largest copper producing nations in the world, Chile, threaten to scuttle output.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5hKBUMZp8Als-GSTeoEWEiarFgk7g\"> AFP:<\/a> Workers at two mines owned by Chile&#8217;s Codelco company, the world&#8217;s biggest copper mining company, went on strike on Monday demanding higher pay and better benefits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Miners at the Chuquicamata and Mina Sur mines, which together account for four percent of the world&#8217;s copper production, are calling for a 7.5 percent pay hike as copper prices soar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Both mines belong to the state-owned Chilean group Codelco, the National Copper Corporation of Chile, which produces around 1.6 million tonnes of copper per year and employs around 5,600 workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">About a third of the unionised miners failed to show up when their shifts began at 5 am Monday.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good news for copper prices, but could eventually be bad news for Chile given that copper accounts for <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/idUKSYD12143620080403\">25%<\/a> of the nation&#8217;s GDP. Yet the Chilean IPSA index appears to so far be doing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/markets\/index?symbol=cl!ipsa\">just fine<\/a>.
