Thomas Kean celebrates justification for Obama to expand war into Yemen<\/p>\n

9\/11 Commission whitewash chief Thomas Kean told CNN
\nyesterday that the Christmas Day plane bomber \u201cdid us a
\nfavor,\u201d by allowing Obama to expand the so-called war on terror
\ninto Yemen, a startling reminder that the highly suspicious Flight 253
\nattack served to fulfil pre-determined U.S. geopolitical objectives.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis guy in some respects looking at it in
\nretrospective probably did us a favor,\u201d Kean told CNN\u2019s
\nState of the Union Sunday talk show, adding that the attempted attack
\nshifted the Obama administration\u2019s attention away from health
\ncare and global warming and back to the war on terror.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t really focused on Yemen and the
\nterrible things that are happening there. Now we are and that\u2019s a
\ngood thing,\u201d said Kean.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GOP chairman\u2019s quote raised eyebrows;
\nby his logic, the Sept. 11, 2001 attackers may also have \u201cdone us
\na favor\u201d by drawing US attention to extremism in
\nAfghanistan,\u201d writes Raw Story\u2019s John Byrne<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Kean\u2019s implication that Yemen was not a
\nsubject of U.S. geopolitical interest before the attempted attack drew
\nattention to the country is completely at odds with the facts.<\/p>\n

A December 24 BBC News report entitled Yemen: New frontier in US \u2018war on terror\u2019 <\/em><\/a>revealed
\nhow the U.S. had already invested $70 million dollars over the last
\nyear on expanding the war on terror into Yemen and that \u201cUS
\nintelligence agencies are keeping a closer and closer watch in this
\nnewly-emerging theatre in the \u201cwar on terror\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week after the incident, President Obama pinned the
\nblame for the attack on terrorists based in Yemen despite the fact that
\nno formal investigation into the bombing had been concluded.<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s statement came one day after
\nBritain\u2019s PM Gordon Brown called an \u201cemergency
\nsummit\u201d on \u201cextremism\u201d in Yemen. \u201cGordon Brown
\nhas invited key international partners to a high-level meeting in order
\nto discuss how best to counter radicalization in Yemen,\u201d a
\nstatement issued by Downing Street announced. \u201cThe prime minister
\nwill host the event on 28 January in London.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fact that the aborted plane bombing attack provided
\nthe perfect justification to expand U.S. military operations into
\nArabian Peninsula in the name of fighting Al-Qaeda makes the suspicious
\ncircumstances surrounding the December 25 incident all the more
\nalarming.<\/p>\n

As we have documented<\/a>,
\nThe FBI has repeatedly changed its story in a haphazard effort to
\naccommodate eyewitness testimony from passengers that conflicts with
\nthe official version of events.<\/p>\n

At first the FBI denied that a second man was arrested
\nin connection with the incident but later admitted a second man was
\nhandcuffed after Flight 253 passenger and eyewitness Kurt Haskell said
\nhe saw an Indian man being led away by authorities after sniffer dogs
\nhad found something in his luggage.<\/p>\n

Officials then claimed that the man had not been on Flight 253 at all and was not connected with the incident, but had to reverse their statement again <\/a>just days later when other eyewitnesses emerged, admitting that the man had been on the plane.<\/p>\n

The fact that the FBI is apparently protecting
\naccomplices involved with the bombing attempt, and thereby keeping the
\nofficial story within the script necessary to pin the attack on a lone
\nman from Yemen who was inspired by Al-Qaeda, blatantly suggests that
\nthe facts are being manipulated to fit a pre-conceived geopolitical
\nagenda.<\/p>\n

The attempted bombing has also been exploited to push for a renewal of the unconstitutional Patriot Act<\/a>, as well as the implementation of invasive naked body scanners in all major airports.<\/p>\n
