{"id":140642,"date":"2010-01-05T11:12:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-05T16:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-we-can-learn-from-europes-40-billion-renewable-energy-super-grid-2010-1"},"modified":"2010-01-05T11:12:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-05T16:12:00","slug":"what-we-can-learn-from-europes-40-billion-renewable-energy-super-grid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/140642","title":{"rendered":"What We Can Learn From Europe&#8217;s $40 Billion Renewable Energy Super Grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"social-button tweetmeme\">\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ntweetmeme_url=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/01\/04\/europe-unites-to-invest-40-billion-in-vast-renewable-energy-super-g\n\/\/ ]]><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/~~\/f?id=e67a6c79a04d5e4a6d0b0400\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wind\" \/>Europe is making moves on its first electricity super-grid dedicated to renewable energy this month, as nine countries will draw up plans to link up a grid of powerful clean energy projects all around the North Sea, <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/01\/04\/europe-unites-to-invest-40-billion-in-vast-renewable-energy-super-grid\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+cleantechnica%2Fcom+%28CleanTechnica%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">CleanTechnica reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The plan would connect Scottish off-shore wind turbines with German solar energy, Norwegian hydro power and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/say-hello-to-wave-energy-2009-11\">wave power<\/a> off the coast of Belgium and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>The Nine North Sea nations &#8211; Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the UK &#8211; will eventually link the super grid to the equally large in scale <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2009\/06\/22\/half-a-trillion-dollars-to-build-huge-desertec-plan\/\" >Desertec grid,<\/a> bringing solar power from Africa to Spain and Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>The network of super efficient undersea transmission cables would cost about $43 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has enough <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/iowa-blowing-up\">wind potential<\/a> to supply 25% of the entire country&#8217;s needs in North Dakota alone, but no transmission lines to connect a statewide line of turbines that would balance out the power and send it to more populated areas.
