Punishing disruptive children by making them stand in \u0091dunce\u0092s corner\u0092 has been outlawed in some areas because of human rights concerns, it is reported.<\/font><\/p>\n

The tactic, used as a last resort by teachers for decades, has been prohibited in some local authority areas. <\/p>\n

It is thought concerns have been expressed that the practice of using \u0091dunce\u0092s corner\u0092 could breach a child\u0092s human rights. <\/p>\n

Teachers have instead been told to make pupils explain to the class why they are being disruptive. <\/p>\n

A report in the Daily Mail said has learned that some primary and secondary schools in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Devon, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Oxfordshire, Sussex and Gwent in South Wales, have prohibited the punishment. <\/p>\n

John Bangs, head of education at the National Union of Teachers, told the newspaper: \u0093As a punishment, standing a child in the corner is not particularly effective. <\/p>\n

\u0093There are some health and safety issues and I’ve heard of some instances where people are concerned about human rights, but not often. <\/p>\n

\u0093The current method is to get the child to explain why they are disrupting the class to try to shame them into behaving. If this fails they could be sent to an exclusion classroom or the head teacher. Standing children in the corner is just not used widely any more.\u0094<\/p>\n
