Denmark’s Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy has announced a major breakthrough in wind turbines, by successfully testing the world’s first wind turbine that features a built-in anemometer.

The system allows the wind turbine to adjust itself to the oncoming wind for optimum power generation. It is based on the use of a laser dubbed the Wind LIDAR, which essentially sees the wind before it reaches the turbine blades. This new technique enhances electricity production by 5%, which translates to increased revenue of about $39,000 per year for a 4MW wind turbine.

Via: Treehugger/Physorg

Eco Factor: Efficient wind turbines align themselves to wind direction for optimal performance.
