Thanks to the discovery of prehistoric footprints from an 8-foot-long animal, scientists now say creatures strolled the Earth 20 million years earlier than previously thought.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">The prints were made by tetrapods\u2014animals with backbones and four limbs\u2014and could rewrite the history of when, where, and why fish evolved limbs and first walked onto land, the study says [<em><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2010\/01\/100106-tetrapod-tracks-oldest-footprints-nature-evolution-walking-land.html\">National Geographic News<\/a><\/em>]<\/span>. The researchers <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v463\/n7277\/full\/nature08623.html\">published their results<\/a> in the journal <em>Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of the fossilized footprints were found in an abandoned quarry in Poland, and the researchers say that the area was probably a lagoon or an intertidal flat when the tetrapod wandered across it about 395 million years ago. Researchers say the footprints in such old rock was a big surprise: <span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">They&#8217;re about 10 million years older than body fossils of creatures such as <em>Tiktaalik<\/em> and <em>Panderichthys<\/em>, &#8230; believed to represent the transition from lobe-finned fish to creatures fully adapted to life on land [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/52896\/title\/Footprints_could_push_back_tetrapod_origins\"><em>Science News<\/em><\/a>].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-8599\"><\/span>The tracks were made by several four-limbed creatures sporting prehistoric toes. <span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">There are distinct &#8220;hand&#8221; and &#8220;foot&#8221; prints, with no evidence of a dragging body or tail, because the animals&#8217; body weight would have been partly supported by water [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/science\/2010\/jan\/06\/footprints-tetrapods-walked\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>]. T<span style=\"color:#000000;\">he results highlight how little scientists really know about the early history of land vertebrates, the researchers say,\u00a0and the find pushes back the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/evolution\/\">evolutionary<\/a> fork where <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/tetrapods\/\">tetrapods<\/a> split from fish.
