When the light is turned off, the brain switches back on [<em><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/01\/06\/brain-neurons-control-technology-breakthroughs-light.html\">Forbes<\/a><\/em>]<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The research team says their technology will help neuroscientists probe the brain&#8217;s circuitry by silencing certain regions and studying the effects. The technique, which was <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v463\/n7277\/full\/nature08652.html\">described<\/a> in the journal <em>Nature<\/em>, could one day be used to shut down overactive regions of the brain often found in people with epilepsy, depression, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, and blindness.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-8718\"><\/span>A bit of fancy <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/genetic-engineering\/\">genetic tinkering<\/a> is required to prime the brain to respond to <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/light\/\">light<\/a>.<span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\"> Neurons fire when electrically charged atoms \u2013 ions \u2013 flood in and out of them, creating a tiny electric potential across their membranes [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn18353-optogenetics-controlling-brain-cells-with-lasers.html\"><em>New Scientist<\/em><\/a>]<\/span>. Using this knowledge, the MIT researchers built upon <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg19526131.400-remote-control-brains-a-neuroscience-revolution.html\">Boyden&#8217;s 2005 discovery<\/a> that demonstrated that certain microbial proteins can create a stimulating effect when genetically engineered into <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/neurons\/\">neurons<\/a> and blasted with light. Boyden has now found a similar pair of bacterial and fungi proteins that also respond to light, but respond by shutting off their neuron hosts.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, one of the proteins responds to yellow light, while the other reacts to blue. <span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">A far-off hope, especially of those who study artificial intelligence, is that using a combination of [the two new proteins] to turn off certain types of neurons along with using Boyden&#8217;s earlier method of activating neurons, the brain could be manipulated in complex ways. Researchers could then learn much about how the brain processes information, better copy it and, maybe, better control it [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/01\/06\/brain-neurons-control-technology-breakthroughs-light.html\"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/a>].<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, using optogenetics to treat humans\u00a0is years, and maybe decades, away from reality.
