If it’s true that there’s always a market for the super expensive, then it looks like Viper has a hit. They’re bringing their SmartStart vehicle control system to the BlackBerry, and while it’s one of the coolest new applications for BlackBerry it’s also one of the most expensive. That’s because the remote entry and starter requires hardware in addition to the application — which, of course, is free. Why charge for the app when you can charge hundreds for the necessary parts? Still, if you have a few hundred laying around, or know someone who likes to buy you expensive gifts, this is something worth checking out.<\/p>\n

Using your BlackBerry, you can lock and unlock your car, pop the trunk, sound the panic alarm, and, of course, start your car. I agree with Jessica Dolcourt of CNET<\/a> that for the price you’ll pay, SmartStart should do more. True, if you have a newer car then maybe it will automatically control the climate, but it still would be nice to see the ability to set the heat and AC, plus the ventilation options. <\/p>\n

Since the application and service are pretty straight forward, there’s nothing else to talk about but the price. If you already have Viper remote starter hardware installed in your car, you’ll get away with paying just another $300 for the SmartStart module. But, if you don’t have a Viper remote starer installed — and I’m betting you don’t — the fresh unit will cost $499. On top of that, Viper charges a $29.99 yearly subscription fee, though thankfully they don’t bill you for the firs tear. <\/p>\n

Cool and practical? Yes. Affordable? I guess that depends on where you stand financially. There are many ways to spend $500 on your car. Is a BlackBerry remote starter on the top of your list? <\/p>\n
