While the top-selling vehicles in the United States in 2009 was the Ford F-150, in Japan the Toyota Prius clinched that spot, making it the first time a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle has held the ranking. According to Japan Automobile Dealers Association, Toyota sold a total of 208,876 units of the Prius in Japan in 2009, nearly three times more than the amount it sold the previous year.<\/p>\n

The success of the Prius shows that consumers are starting to accept green vehicles as their primary choice – well, at least in Japan. Hybrid sales make up about 10 percent of new vehicles sold in the country.<\/p>\n

According to Green Car Congress, hybrids have only a 2.8 percent share of new vehicles sold in the United States (and we’re pretty sure there’s an acceptable reason for that in terms driving habits, road conditions and many other factors).<\/p>\n
