In a sign of the type of compromise that Republicans might accept, Gregg suggested consumer protection could be given a priority at existing agencies instead of creating a separate, new government entity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&ldquo;A much better approach is to raise the level of responsibility within the regulatory agencies so that they understand [consumer protection] is a coequal requirement with safety and soundness&rsquo;&rsquo; of banks, Gregg said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dodd said in a recent interview with the Globe that he &ldquo;absolutely&rsquo;&rsquo; supports the agency.
